Given our current, shelter-in-place predicament, I just went through my library in attempt to find as many great, but lesser-known films as I could, from the past couple of decades, as a recommendation thread of sorts. Yes, a few of these are more popular/known than others, but a lot of them have fallen through the cracks and are definitely worth revisiting, or checking out for the first time, if you find yourself running out of content...

ADVENTURELAND (2009)

BEGINNERS (2010)

BLUE VALENTINE (2010)

DRINKING BUDDIES (2013)

FRANCES HA (2012)

THE IMMIGRANT (2013)

LAUREL CANYON (2002)

LOCKE (2013)

OUR IDIOT BROTHER (2011)

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED (2008)

RUBY SPARKS (2012)

A SERIOUS MAN (2009)

A SINGLE MAN (2009)

TWO LOVERS (2008)

VICKY CRISTINA BERCELONA (2008)

THE WACKNESS (2008)

YOUR SISTER'S SISTER (2012)

Some great movies on TCTTS list IMHO. I think this board is more educated than most, but a couple of my go-tos when friends ask me for recommendations (one comedy, one drama).

The Way Way Back

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Fat Bib Fortuna

For anyone who likes Linklater movies, Julie Delpy directed her own in 2007 and though stylistically it's slightly different, the influence is obviously there (heavy on dialogue, situational comedy, etc.).

Only real difference this time is her partner is even more nervous and neurotic than she is in Adam Goldberg (who is always great).

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is one of my favorites. It's long and has slow paces but has so much tension. Every character seems like they're expecting to get offed at any second, except Bob. The music is awesome.

Goon. Hockey enforcer. Seann William Scott. Funny and only an hour and half long.

I'm embarrassed (I guess?) to say there are only two movies on this entire thread I've even heard of and I haven't seen any movie listed so far.

Edit: Have seen Fandango and that's it. Didn't see that one when I posted.

I thought this was a pretty good movie. It kind of gets lost in the Nicholas Cage take any role for a paycheck straight to Netflix catalog of movies..

I haven't seen Blue Ruin yet (I need to), but that reminded of me of Green Room, which is fantastic, and from the same director...

I debated listing Green Room too. A lot of people think it's better than Blue Ruin.

Lives of Others is in my top ten and I am a certified film snob. Incredible film.

I'm not sure I would call it "great," but The Hammer with Adam Carolla is pretty funny.

This one IS great: Days of Heaven.
