There are several great lines in the movies that weren't in the books. Gandalf's talk with Frodo in Moria was one of the best parts of the script.

And then we cut Glorfindel.

Your champion, with 57.8% of the vote.

Defeating a worthy runner-up with 42.2% of the vote.

In the consolation final, Star Lord's introduction defeated He's a friend from work 52.4%-47.6%. I will begin selling T-shirts that read "Star Lord 2, Point Break 0" tomorrow for $19.96 a pop.

So, what do you guys think make Cap worthy in Endgame, but he wasn't yet in Age of Ultron?

Maybe it was a pre-Ultron version of the hammer, and Cap did something after Thor but before Age of Ultron that soured it on Cap.

I think he was worthy, but didn't want to show up Thor.

He was always worthy, or else he never would have even budged Mjolnir as he did in AoU. And I agree about not wanting to show up Thor.

Eh, I've heard that theory, but I disagree with it.

In Ultron there was no reason for him to wield the hammer, he was just doing it to do it. When the time came and he was needed he was truly worthy.

One of the theories I've read is that holding the secret that Bucky killed Tony's parents may have been the difference, and one he admitted to it, he became worthy.

This thread is giving me the itch to read LOTR. I haven't actually read it in decades. Thus, the movies have become canon in my head because I just don't recall all of the details from the books that were different.

It's not a theory, it's what the Russo brothers decided is the story.

https://collider.com/why-could-captain-america-hold-thors-hammer-in-avengers-endgame/

"I think it goes all the way back to Ultron. I think everyone who's a Marvel fan, in that moment where Cap tested the hammer, felt deep down in their heart that he was worthy and that he could potentially lift that, and boy wouldn't it be special one day if he did. And obviously if you create drama around the circumstances of him wielding the hammer, and then kicking Thanos' ass for 30 seconds after that, we felt like we could create a risible moment for the audience."

"In our heads he was able to wield it, and he didn't know that until that moment Ultron when he tried to pick it up. But Cap's sense of character and his sense of humility, sort of out of deference to Thor's ego, you know Cap in that moment realizing he can move the hammer decides not to."

Pretty sure they weren't involved in that movie. I don't think their deciding that means it was the original intent. It's sort of like Rian Johnson deciding Rey was a nobody.

Yeah, not a huge fan of the "he was always worthy." I like to think of it as a one-time boost after a lifetime of greatness. I don't want to think that he could have just used the hammer at any point in the last dozen films.
Brian Earl Spilner

Yep. To me it cheapens that moment. If he was always worthy, it's no longer a climax to his character arc, and that's how I prefer to think of that moment.

Just like Tony's arc was perfectly set up to end with "And I am Iron Man". (Which is crazy considering all the different writers/directors who've come through.)

Kevin Feige has confirmed that Steve Rogers was indeed always worthy of Mjolnir, but did not lift the hammer out of respect for Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In a Reddit AMA, he said, "We think he was always worthy, and was being polite in Age of Ultron."

Joss Whedon at SDCC 2015

"How is Steve Rogers not worthy?" a fan asked.

"Is he not? Are we sure?" Whedon responded, a hint of teasing in his voice. "Did he fail? Or did he stop?"

I think you could argue CA was always able to wield it. Sounds over dramatic but his character essentially represents all that is good and pure. If he realized he could move it early on, he would have made the choice not to usurp Thor simply because that's who he is.

Nothing comes close. This is my clear #1 and may be the best scene from any comic movie ever.

I almost made the "main on" end credits part of the contest although that would be one long moment. Regardless, I can' think of a cooler way to wrap up the final movie. Disney did a similar look at the end of the 2017 Beauty and the Beast movie that I just loved, This is even cooler than that.

Few moments would have beaten that in my voting.

I saw Endgame opening night and people were applauding like the actors were there taking a bow. End of an era.

I committed to watching all the movies once quarantine hit. Took a little while once I got back in the office, but I polished off Endgame last night. I also watched them in "chronological" order as opposed to when they were released, which was a cool way to take in the series.

I have been saving "Far From Home" and haven't seen it yet. So that's all that's left for me.

Anyway, all of this to say that having recently rewatched all these movies, this was an exceptional list. One I would have added (if it wasn't part of the original list) that always resonated with me was Thor getting to say goodbye to his mom. I love that scene maybe more than anything else in the series.

Muck, can you open back up the original poll so we can see the entrants?

Do you think they're better in chronological order, release order, or something else?

So if you watch in chrono order do you watch Captain Marvel second and then wait 15 movies for her to show up again?
MW03

I liked them more in chronological order, I think. Captain Marvel made a lot more sense this way, at least. When watching them upon release, Captain Marvel felt like this overpowered character that showed up at the very end of the series and ended up "saving" the day to some extent. It was almost like they had written Infinity War and Endgame, started shooting, and then realized they had forgotten to introduce Captain Marvel.

By her showing up early, Fury paging her after the snap landed better because it made it feel like an "all hands on deck" type situation. And then her showing up with the explanation that there are a ton of other planets without a team of Avengers felt like a more viable explanation.

The sequence I went was this one, which I found randomly on the interenets somewhere, but is repeated here:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger (takes place during WWII)
  • Captain Marvel (takes place in 1995)
  • Iron Man (takes place in 2010)
  • Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man)
  • The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • Thor (takes place six months before Avengers)
  • The Avengers (takes place in 2012)
  • Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after The Avengers)
  • Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (takes place in 2015)
  • Ant-Man (takes place in 2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War)
  • Doctor Strange (takes place in 2016)
  • Black Panther (takes place in 2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (takes place in 2017)
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp (ambiguous, but fits nicely between IW and Endgame)
  • Avengers: Endgame (starts in 2017, finishes in 2022)

Yes, and in Endgame, when they ask her where's she been all this time, it makes the lack of Captain Marvel make more sense.

I will make one caveat about the chronological order: Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is the patriarch of these movies. It starting with him and then ending with him has a perfect storytelling symmetry you lose when you begin with Captain America and don't get to Tony until the 3rd movie.

Thanks for posting this. I think I'll start a marathon, starting with Iron Man 3, which I haven't seen since it released in theaters. Wonder if I'll enjoy it more this time around.
