Didn't see a thread on this but figured some might like to see this.

There are 4 standards and a film will have to meet at least 2 of them. The 1st standard is all about on screen representation. It would be ridiculous if they had to meet the 1st standard no matter what.

Article said this was announced in June, but maybe now the details are just coming out?

Shouldn't be a problem. All movies are now made to appease Chinese censors. Since Asian is one of the underrepresented categories, you get two birds with one stone.

The King's Speech would never win Best Picture with these rules and then my boyfriend would not have the Best Actor Oscar.

Acting is art. It would totally change what a director can do if there are race/ethnicity requirements.
Is Spike Lee going to have to have any Asian in his movies?

I do not understand how anyone can think this is a good idea.

What bothers me about these standards is that the major studios will adapt to meet the requirements for everything going on behind the camera but for low budget small studios and DIY types these standards will serve as a gatekeeping device.

Meh, it's their award, they can do what they want. Giving studios options of different requirements to meet seems reasonable. Plus, it's not being implemented for three plus years. Seems like they've given it some thought, unlike some of the other changes they tried to make.

These are bare minimum requirements. It's harder to find a movie in the last 30 years that don't meet these requirements. Getting mad about these rules seems silly.

On the other side, praising the Oscars for implementing these new rules is also silly. Because again, what movie wouldn't meet this criteria?

Maybe because 'on-screen representation' the way they put it should have zero bearing on what was the best picture of the year. And we all know what that requirement will ultimately do to the movies that do get nominated and ones that don't. It could also incentivize sacrificing art for checking boxes, which ultimately waters down films even more.

But take that shot at the e-board posters. Hollywood has never given us any reason to question motives behind decisions like this...never at all.

No, we all don't know what that requirement will ultimately do to the movies that do get nominated and the ones that don't. There's absolutely nothing here that prevents movies like The King's Speech, 1917, Dunkirk, Boyhood, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Saving Private Ryan, etc from continuing to get made and nominated.

But take that shot at Hollywood. TexAgs has never passed on any reason to question their motives behind decisions like this... never at all.
No possibility of a slippery slope?

The new guidelines would prevent this scenario. This one off scenario that would never happen in today's age or any age in the last few decades. To say that these new rules will lead to a slippery slope of water down movies is a bit silly.

Since three of the four categories are off-screen there'll still be plenty of movies that feature homogenous casts (not every historical film will look like Hamilton). There are subcategories for each point above that you can read more about here.
They've set the bar so low the standards have no almost no significance. So why have the standards in the first place? I guess to hurt indie films...

I don't think anyone is arguing that. I believe they are arguing that an award given to the best movies of each year shouldn't care about what the racial or ethnic makeup of the people who made it.

It just seems like it is pandering. Like someone said above, it doesn't really affect anything other than giving certain people In the decision making process the ability to pat themselves on the back over nothing.

I guess the real issue is people are surprised the Academy is willing to pat itself on the back for essentially nothing lol

I think y'all are taking my example too seriously and missing the point that this movie doesn't exist. Just poking fun at people upset at something as trivial as this. The Academy set up guidelines to stop a movie that wouldn't happen from winning Oscars. To be fair, it did get us talking about the Oscars in September, which might have been their goal all along.
