I'm sorry, but Contact absolutely deserves to be part of the discussion, seeing as the entire point of the movie is that the "alien" of it all is unprovable ("Are you really going to sit there and tell us that we should just take this all on faith?"). It's also steeped in some pretty solid science/protocol, at least until the final act, of course.

That being said, if so...

01. Contact
02. Interstellar
03. The Martian
04. Apollo 13
05. Gravity
06. The Right Stuff
07. Armageddon
08. Sunshine
09. Moon
10. First Man

Though, admittedly, it's been ages since I've seen a couple of these, and the order could change upon rewatch.

7. Contact
8. Gravity

The Martian is easily my favorite "space" movie. I bet I've seen it 100 times, and it never gets old. Phenomenal cast as well.

The Martian is just the space version of Castaway.

That cast is insane when you rewatch it. So many big names for a movie where 75% of is it one guy.

Something really cool about The Martian that I can't really explain. It's very simple and straightforward, but incredibly fun and watchable. No frills. Almost breezy, but in a good way. And a very feel-good ending.

This is a great topic, and all of my favorites have been listed. I'll throw one more decent pick out just because it hasn't been named, and it's a decent space movie:

Just moved The Martian up to #3. I hadn't seen it since in the theater, but due to this thread, and a recent episode covering it on The Rewatchables podcast that I've been wanting to listen to, I decided to pull the trigger, and am glad I did. So smart, and so good. Damn near perfect, in fact.

I guess I need to rewatch The Martian. When I watched it the first time, I had Read the book just prior and the movie felt like it missed a ton.

The movie does what the book mocks at the end with the Ironman ability.

I hate to be bothered by one person in a movie, but why Kristen Wiig? Also these heavyweights, and Kristen Wiig. I don't get it.

I liked Contact a lot, but it's impossible for me to think of it without thinking about this.

The end of Contact ruins it. The idea that she would be grilled in congress for taking part in some elaborate hoax is asinine. The machine was glowing white. She ship got pulled towards it. There were thousand witnesses.

I need to watch The Martian again. I remember really enjoying it, but it didn't stick with me as being this all time great movie.

Contact is one of my favorites. don't know if that fits your category exactly.

I rewatched Contact for the first time in years a few nights ago on cable. Not only does it hold up, but I seriously think it might be one of my all-time top ten movies - space, sci-fi, or otherwise. It's just so damn good, and everything I want from a movie.
It's very high on my list for multiple reasons.
- written by Carl Sagan. as always the book is even better but they did a real good job.
- I have always been a Jodi Foster fan
- i'm not ashamed to say it, I like Matthew McConaughey movies too.
- I love the smartness of the movie. I've always been a scifi fan but I don't like the movies the use scifi as an excuse for pyrotechnics and CGI with no real story
- I like how it doesn't shy away from discussing faith and how Ellie in her own way learns to have some kind of faith
- and some of the great lines
"You're an interesting species. An interesting mix. You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other."
"The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?"

Not sure if you have been paying much attention to the world in which we live. Today roughly 10% of our population does not think we landed on the moon. In the 70s, that number was 30%. Partisan beliefs in facts we choose to believe has only gotten worse. I find this part of Contact more believable today than it was 20 years ago.

If you don't believe in "space dementia" or the sheer will of all-go, no-quit, big-nuts Harry Stamper, I don't know what to tell you.

I love this quote from Ben about the movie:

"I asked Michael why it was easier to train oil drillers to become astronauts than it was to train astronauts to become oil drillers. He told me to shut the f*** up, so that was the end of that talk. He said, 'You know, Ben, just shut up, okay? You know, this is a real plan.' I was like, 'You mean it's a real plan at NASA to train oil drillers?' And he was, 'Just shut your mouth.'"
