Astronaut Farmer didn't make anyone's list??? Shocked.
agreed, not even the commercials/teasers could make it look goodAgHawkeye said:
How did you put Ad Astra on any list of good movies? That was so so so so bad.

Kelly Preston

It's a really underrated movie, and Bruce Dern is great in it. It's too bad more folks here haven't seen it. It even has a song named after it.EKUAg said:
Glad someone mentioned Silent Running.
It was second to last on my list. Mars on Netflix is worse. It's interesting that they blended interviews of real "experts" with a drama, but I could only make it through two episodes. The commander gave the "if you're not fully committed, you can leave" speech literally minutes before takeoff...AgHawkeye said:

Kelly Preston in Mischief, oh my.
Leah Thompson in Howard the Duck wasn't half bad.

Go watch All the Right Moves...not half bad at all.
Badass movie and becoming more relevant by the year. Probably doesn't quite qualify here though.CheeseSndwch said:
1. Gattaca - no aliens and barely anything that would be considered a space scene but still a great "space" movie.

Seeing all these lists and mentions, it really is surprising there aren't more classic/pure space movies. Off the top of my head, I would have guessed there were twice this many, but it's a challenge just to come up with ten greats.

To be fair, the thread is excluding quite a bit. Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, space horror, Avatar all miss the cut. I'm honestly surprised there are this many science and engineering based space movies. I can't think of any other genre that has so many movies with an overwhelming STEM focus, except maybe war movies.

This is a great topic, and all of my favorites have been listed. I'll throw one more decent pick out just because it hasn't been named, and it's a decent space movie:
Mission to Mars

The first 100 minutes or so is awesome, and one of my favorites. But then it goes completely off the deep end.

Contact is one of my favorites. don't know if that fits your category exactly.
I rewatched Contact for the first time in years a few nights ago on cable. Not only does it hold up, but I seriously think it might be one of my all-time top ten movies - space, sci-fi, or otherwise. It's just so damn good, and everything I want from a movie.

Agreed. But I can forgive stuff like that when in service of the greater theme, and the way the tables turn on Ellie thematically there at the end is so brilliant, IMO. It's one of my favorite character arcs ever.
