How did you put Ad Astra on any list of good movies? That was so so so so bad.

Clearly no one here has seen space trucker Bruce. A very low budget topaz in the rough. It's free on Amazon prime for those of you with 90 minutes to spare.

Kelly Preston in Mischief, oh my.

Leah Thompson in Howard the Duck wasn't half bad.

It's a really underrated movie, and Bruce Dern is great in it. It's too bad more folks here haven't seen it. It even has a song named after it.

It was second to last on my list. Mars on Netflix is worse. It's interesting that they blended interviews of real "experts" with a drama, but I could only make it through two episodes. The commander gave the "if you're not fully committed, you can leave" speech literally minutes before takeoff...

I just could not get over how bad Ad Astra was.

I think it had so much potential, and then bam just a total clusterfu**

I think I need to give interstellar another look, didn't really like it.

In honor of Sean Connery...I nominate Outland.

As a teen I watched it many times, thank goodness for the freeze frame button on the old VCR.

Disney's The Black Hole is a really good space flick.

1. Gattaca - no aliens and barely anything that would be considered a space scene but still a great "space" movie.

1.) Apollo 13 is the GOAT. Expertly cast, ground breaking filming in microgravity, early CG that still holds up, incredible score, oh, and it actually happened.

2.) Interstellar

3.) Contact

4.) The Martian

5.) Gravity

6.) Sunshine

7.) Passengers

8.) First Man - I'd like to rate this higher. I had high hopes for this film. The lunar landing scene is marvelous and awe inspiring, but it's otherwise sort of a boring movie.

*** pretty much anything ***

Ad Astra - just terrible. Slow-moving, meandering plot. No dialogue. Loose ends everywhere. I'd like this 2 hours of my life back.

Badass movie and becoming more relevant by the year. Probably doesn't quite qualify here though.

I can't think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned.

Seeing all these lists and mentions, it really is surprising there aren't more classic/pure space movies. Off the top of my head, I would have guessed there were twice this many, but it's a challenge just to come up with ten greats.

Forbidden Planet. Classic space movie. Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis. And Robbie.

To be fair, the thread is excluding quite a bit. Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, space horror, Avatar all miss the cut. I'm honestly surprised there are this many science and engineering based space movies. I can't think of any other genre that has so many movies with an overwhelming STEM focus, except maybe war movies.

True. That's a good point. I was just surprised I had trouble even filling a top ten.

That's why I don't watch most "science fiction" movies By and large they are woefully devoid of any real science.

This is a great topic, and all of my favorites have been listed. I'll throw one more decent pick out just because it hasn't been named, and it's a decent space movie:

Mission to Mars

The first 100 minutes or so is awesome, and one of my favorites. But then it goes completely off the deep end.

Ah, Moonraker.

It does have one of the best lines in 007 movies, when Goodhead sees Jaws on the ski buggy: Bond says, "His name's Jaws, he kills people"

Contact is one of my favorites. don't know if that fits your category exactly.

I rewatched Contact for the first time in years a few nights ago on cable. Not only does it hold up, but I seriously think it might be one of my all-time top ten movies - space, sci-fi, or otherwise. It's just so damn good, and everything I want from a movie.

Great flick...hated the end...she should have known about the time (18hrs of static)...that whole senate hearing song and dance was a bit much...

Agreed. But I can forgive stuff like that when in service of the greater theme, and the way the tables turn on Ellie thematically there at the end is so brilliant, IMO. It's one of my favorite character arcs ever.

She was awesome...as she usually is in all her flicks...but I remember becoming upset in the theater and thinking...you're an astrophysicist...own these clowns!
