Specifically I love Casablanca because of the context of the film. It was filmed just after we entered the war and no one knew how the war would go. The optimistic tone might have been propaganda, but it was definitely hope for a world that would not be forever under tyranny and the storm cloud of war. There's no foreshadow that the good guys would win, just that everyone will have to pick a side(and hopefully pick the right side).rilloaggie said:
The "all time great" movies, (e.g. Gone With The wind, Casablanca, all the James Dean movies) are pretty awful. They were only popular in their day because there probably weren't hardly any other movies to choose from at the time and they're only popular today because self important cinephiles want to like them.
I suppose most people love it for the romance plot, so you might have point there.
