Ionno. I liked a lot of the movies that have been nominated this year. Devoid of big blockbusters, sure, but that's not necessarily an automatic L. Still better than some normal years (looking at you, 2011).

I can not only say I haven't seen any of the films nominated for best picture, but I haven't even heard of most of them. Am I alone here? The best movies released in 2020 that I saw were Onward, Palm Springs(Hulu), and Soul(Disney+).

GIGANTIC asterisk for anything that wins this year, imo.

I've only seen Nomadland. In the past few years, I had tried to watch every BP nominee by the time of the awards. Crazy that I've only seen 1 this year.

Responses definitely interesting in this thread and, really, as an indicator of watching habits during COVID/quarantine. A majority if not all of these are available on streaming services (many on Netflix). I guess we all didn't watch as many movies while we were stuck in the house as I thought.

That is the thing about all the streaming services. Which ones were they on? Were they featured? Did the graphic or auto trailer catch my eye? The overload of options makes it really easy to skip past these.

The thing about good movies in theaters is that was is a buzz, lead up, a release, reactions, box office #s, etc. Even if it's not a big action flick that gets it, usually the best movies would have some marketing engine behind them or word of mouth.

I have a feeling this will be the lowest rated telecast ever.
More people will watch an episode of "Big Bang Theory" on TBS that day than will watch this award show....

Article on last year's.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/oscars-hit-all-time-low-tv-ratings-sunday-feb-9-2020-1278364#:~:text=ABC's%20Oscar%20telecast%20reached%20all,weeks%20later%20in%20the%20year.
Quote:

ABC's Oscar telecast reached all-time lows in the ratings, falling sharply from last year.

The three-hour-plus kudocast averaged about 23.6 million viewers and a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49, well below the 29.56 million and 7.7 for 2019's awards ceremony which aired two weeks later in the year. The Oscars were down 20 percent year-over-year in viewers and 31 percent in the key ad-sales demo of adults 18-49.

Last year's Oscars stopped a four-year ratings slide, growing the audience for the first time since 2014.
Sunday's awards show also falls well short of previous ratings lows for the Oscars, set in 2018. That year the telecast averaged 26.54 million viewers and a 6.8 rating in the demo; Sunday was down 11 percent in viewers and 22 percent in adults 18-49 from prior lows.

I don't see any reason why it would increase. Last year it was already almost the lowest ever.

Haven't ratings for traditional broadcast television (and for that matter movie theater attendance) been trending downward for years now? Just because of how fragmented our consumption methods have become?

I like that Borat got a nomination. As for the best picture nominees, Chicago 7 is the only one I've even heard of, and that's because of a thread here.

I think it's a combination of a couple of things:
1. The Oscars (and Grammys and Emmys and MTV Movie Awards) just aren't as relevant as they were in decades past. They're no longer the broad-based cultural touchstones that they used to be, in part because:
2. Why sit through the interminably long broadcast when you can get instant results online and see clips on Youtube within minutes of them airing

That and I just don't think the shows are as good as they once were. Maybe it's just romanticizing the past.

The serialized scripted content was more entertaining or compelling vs the limited dramatic movie content.
Exactly this.

This past year we had stuff like The Queen's Gambit, The Crown, The Mandalorian, Dark, Better Call Saul, Ozark, Westworld, The Last Dance, all of which was amazing television.

I can't think of a single movie I watched in 2020 which would rival any of these as far as level of anticipation for me.

Hell, even quality-wise. Soul and Nomadland were both good, but FAR exceeded by most of the shows I mentioned above.

This will no about be the lowest-rated Oscar telecast in decades. They're not even having it at the traditional Dolby Theater location this year, as it's being at held at Union Station downtown (a literal train station, though a location you've seen in a hundred movies) for Covid reasons, and will likely look and feel more like the Grammy's did this past weekend. The whole thing is going to be super weird, and the movies, for the most part, yes, are a bunch of streamers hardly anyone has seen, also due to Covid.

That said, to make up for it, I don't think people are prepared for how insane the second half of 2021 is going to be, movie-wise. It's not only chock-full of tons of massive blockbusters, it looks to feature quite possibly the greatest Oscar slate since 2007, with movies from Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Joel Coen, Clint Eastwood, James Gray, Adam McKay, David O. Russel, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, and Guillermo del Toro, to name a few, plus a sh*t ton of other Oscar contenders from big-name actors. And not just all indie stuff either, but big, massive dramas with wide appeal.

In other words, while this Oscar season will surely go down in history as one of the worst ever, 2022's Oscar telecast, which will follow less than a year after this one, could very well see a return to the glory days, considering the plethora of awards/blockbuster content we - and Oscar voters - will have to choose from, in the wake of the pandemic. It's going to be glorious, and I absolutely cannot wait.

But can you do like a week free with Apple tv?

I saw it last March at the True/False film festival right before everything was shut down

Judas and the Black Messiah was one I was excited to see but I want those hours back. Horrible. Beyond boring and just not well done at all. Could've been so much better than it was. The fact that this has multiple nominations tells you all you need to know about this years movies.
