I need to read the series. Couldn't stand the controls of the first Witcher game, so never played it. Stayed way from Witcher 2 but finally picked up Witcher 3 and loved it. I've avoided the books because I was wary of a translated story. Just feel like you lose the author's "voice".
I worked with a Polish company and we chatted about the books on one of my visits. I'm sure there are some differences, but one of them looked through one on my kindle and felt that they did a good job of at least capturing the way he used language, so take that for what it's worth.
You can probably find some videos on youtube for games 1 & 2 if you want to experience those stories without the clunky controls. Game 1 seems to stick closer to the novels in terms of timeline and events, while games 2 and 3 go off into their own territory. I'm sure you've heard it mentioned before, but they're not really considered canon, mostly because the author despises games as an artistic medium.
