Great season. I thought the possession and false world thing was a little tropey but it was definitely done "right."

I'm kind of of the opposite opinion (although I'm only halfway through S2) - cut out almost everything that isn't Geralt or Ciri. And leave Ciri out until she's relevant rather than tease her across all the S1 episodes.

A couple monster hunts, Law of Surprise wedding episode, Geralt meets Yenn, Geralt meets Ciri, the war breaks out, Geralt finds Ciri, they go to Kaer Morhen, they need help from a sorceress, etc. People start hunting Ciri. Etc.

I think forcing Yennifer into every episode has been nearly a disaster. Her storylines are all over the place and so far she's nothing like the book or game version. There's also not much content to go by there so they have to make it up as they go and it's hit or miss.

So far, at least. TBD

I don't think she's supposed to be anything like the book or game, this show is a different world.

Awesome Easter egg: the dock guard in episode 4 is the voice actor who does a ton of Witcher 3 NPC voices, villagers and guards and such.

I have voice actor radar.

Yennifers scene at the end of season one is I think still the best scene of the series though.

I just finished a rewatch of season 1 and I like it a lot more after watching season 2 for some reason.

I liked it the first go round but after figuring out the time line stuff and then seeing the second season is kinda showing what the stakes were from the first season.

I know it's off the rails from the books but I enjoy it a lot. Definitely more than WoT. It seems to be a crew and cast that cares a bit more, but that's just my opinion.

I liked S2 more than S1 but it just cannot stand up to the Witcher 3 + DLC as far as story and characters go. I didn't care for the random slow mo shots during fight scenes either, just kind of cheesy.

Decent show, but overall a disappoint for me as a HUGE Witcher video game fanboy.

Ciri's father is Emyhr in the books. I don't recall how it's made known in the books, but it felt kinda necessary to do it where they did in the show. Helped make the Nilfgaard part of the story make more sense, raised the stakes a bit.

Edit: i looked up to refresh my memory and it's not revealed until the end of the books who Ciri's father is.
This is the real missed build up, I think they did the reveal way too early. People like bits and pieces and putting it together(i.e. show, don't tell). Having the reveal this early in the story removes the mystery of why Nilfgaard is both so powerful and why they're so obsessive about finding Ciri. They could have gotten great mileage out of the mysteriousness of Emyhr being an off screen seemingly omnipotent and omniscient emperor that is intent on controlling or burning the world.

EDIT: For the books the reveal was exceptionally gratifying as it was revealed after the main climax of the larger story. It put a major bow on the book series as it was the last and final piece to fall into place.

Yeah I think they wanted a big tease for next season but it just felt like a cheap reveal at this point. Still a solid season for me though. Especially after watching wheel of time.

Ciris father is actively subverting the Law of Surprise, something he famously supported. If they dont have a GOOD developed rationale, I think I'm done.

Months ago a show used one line of dialogue to undercut the motivations of a major character and I said that wasnt just bad storytelling, it was lazy writing which didnt respect the audience. Ssdd

Just finished season 2...

I don't game anymore, but I think there is a book series for this as well... where do I start? Are the books good to decent? Do the games feed off the book? Or were the books created from the game?

I don't like the books, I just don't like his style of prose.

The games were made from the books.

The relationship between the author & CD Project Red is kind of funny. He initially had a bad deal for the property because he thought the games would never go anywhere.

The Witcher 3 tells the story much better than the book IMO.

The books are decent and the game takes the books and really improves on the world.

Read the two story collections first, they take place before the main story (Sword of Destiny and Last Wish) and give background on a lot of the world and characters. From there, Blood of Elves is the first one and you can find the reading order. Like others have said, the prose is a bit weird, and one of the books barely has Geralt in it at all, but they're a worthwhile read. Worldbuilding is definitely his strength and it really comes out in the novels.

The games pick up where The Lady of the Lake leaves off, with it being thought that Geralt is dead. Everything in the games is not really canon in relation to the books. The first two are okay, but the first in particular is tough in terms of gameplay. If you want the story, I recommend a let's play on youtube. The third game is the most accessible, especially after all the post-launch work they put into it, and it tells a great story that really feels like a true sequel to the books more so than the first two did. Note that the third game is the only one that even includes both Ciri and Yennifer beyond mentions.

I really liked the audio books. But yes I do recommend the book series, I've gotten bogged down in the first game, but the books are really good.

I do think the casting on the show has been very solid so far. Yen is supposed to be more of an ice queen, but the rest have been solid I hope the series gets to run the distance to the Lady of the Lake(the last book).

Already read it, it's a stand alone novel that takes place between the "the Last Wish" stories. Lady of the Lake is the last chronologically speaking. Unless if you really want to nit pick and count the one chapter flash forward to the college student that runs across Geralt in the far future. Even then though, during Ciri's plane-walking one of the settings she may have visited was in the far future. So even then it's still the "Lady of the Lake".

There are 1-2 books that are Witcher short stories (Sword of Destiny, The Last Wish), the actual Witcher 'saga' is 5 novels (Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, Lady of the Lake). There's also one more standalone prequel novel (Season of Storms)

Start with the short stories then read the saga then SoS for fun

Awful news! For all my many, many complaints about this show, Cavill wasn't really one of them.

At the very least, we can probably all agree that recasting the lead character in the 4th season is lame as ****.

Wtf? I had half of S2 left to watch, but why even bother at this point if Cavill is going to leave the show? I wouldn't watch it past that point anyway.

What an absolutely boneheaded decision. I can't imagine it was related to Superman right? I'm thinking Netflix didn't want to pay up maybe.

My guess is they may want him for more superman (they said multiple projects) and even though he is 38ish he is still considered in the running (though an outlier) to be Bond.

He was such a fan though. I know it's his job and DC can offer more money, but I'd hope there is more going on that caused him to walk away, like creative differences.

I'll watch S3 but man S4 previews without him better look real good to make me want to watch at that point. This is bad for fans of the show.

I have no source or factual basis to say this, but I'm 95% sure.

This is Cavill leaving because he knows S3 is garbage, and he's bailing after fulfilling his contractual duties. He loves the source materials, and a lot of the Witcher/Netflix publicity that came out last week revealed that many/most of the writers for the show have disdain for or openly mocked the source material.

Mega-nerd & fanboy that he is, I bet he takes this extremely personally - and he's ditching the show with extreme prejudice.

After season 2, I'd believe this. All they have to do is follow the source material, but the freaking hubris of show writers believing that they can do it better. I'd pull my hair out at these idiots if I wasn't so resigned to them ruining everything they touch. Who freaking vets show writers and actually thinks, "ya, they'll be better than the bestselling author..." It's pure insanity, studios need to look at which shows get cancelled early and fire the writers that were responsible for said shows.

i am guessing there is some, bc of said comments by writers, but I think this is more him maximizing his earnings potential. If he is tied to S04 Witcher, he cannot even be considered for both Bond AND Superman.

but it is a shame. as you said, he is a fan as well as a big huge, muscular nerd. he was perfect for this role.
Do you have a source on the writers thing? I don't not believe you, I'm just curious, hadn't heard that one. Such a weird thing to say out loud
