When you hear the words "Rock Star", who first comes to mind?

For me, Slash pops into my head. The guitar, the hair, the image, the music, the longevity, the mystique, the lore... yep, he's first on my list.

There are many right answers to this. There will be some wrong answers, unfortunately. Example: Ringo Star. Drummer for arguably the greatest band of all time. That dude does not come across as a Rock Star. Same for Charlie Watts, drummer for the Stones. Mick and Keith are obviously very acceptable answers.

He's admittedly not aging well, but David Lee Roth will always be the quintessential rock star in my mind.

Not Rivers Cuomo or Brandon Flowers. Those choads are opposite of rock stars.

Eddie Van Halen is the original to me, nothing like him before or since, he's the Michael Jordan of guitarists.

Jimmy Page

I even think Slash would say Jimmy Page.

I went to Steven Tyler for whatever reason. I think it works though.

Rock star is much more than being technically proficient at your instrument. It's an attitude. Style. Typically need to be popular with the ladies as well. It's the guy every guy wants to be and every girl wants to be with. Not sure EVH had those qualities, despite his awesome ability on the guitar.

for the most part, you really can only be a rock star if you are the lead singer or the guitarist.

drummers and bass guitarists can have the attitude and the skillz, but "rock star" really best describes the guitarists and singers since they are the ones that really get to showboat the most.
duff, Nikki sixx, Jeff ament, Steve Harris, Lars, Danny Carrey, Neil peart, etc.

Incorrect assessment of a rockstar.

Tommy Lee would be an exception.

Every young aspiring guitarist of the time wanted to be like Eddie and he married an actress so I would say he makes the grade.

I have a hard time thinking of Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell as rock stars, but if they are, I'd call them the last rock stars.

Correction: Dave Grohl may be the last rock star to come out.

After the 80s, rock stars became something different. The glam was gone. Angst and quiet stoicism don't describe rock stars to me. Danger and Mystery (a la Jimmy Page) do. Fine line there.

Anyone want to make the argument that Tommy Lee wasn't a rock star?

There's definitely an argument and this is clearly subjective. I think most guitarists envied his skill but didn't necessarily want to be him.

As another example, no doubt Yngwie Malmsteen (or Mark Knopfler) are better guitarists than Lenny Kravitz. But Lenny is more of a rock star.

I agree with this and have always said it. I think Dave Grohl is the last true rock star, if you consider his beginning as a rockstar when he started Foo Fighters.

For me, a rockstar is about the personality, stage presence, and impact on the popular music of that day and onward.

I can't think of anyone who meets those criteria that started after 1996 or so. Our last true rock stars hit the first half of the '90s.

The only person on this list i would consider a "rock star" would be Jack White. Though, I guess that would make me change my last post to Jack White would be the last true "rock star".

Just being in a rock band that gets some popularity does not make someone a "rock star", in my opinion.

Jack White is the last great rock star. Mick Jagger has to be the greatest. If he lived longer, Hendrix may be #1. Unlike guys like Jagger, Mercury and Plant, Hendrix was the only guy in the band people cared about.

while most on this thread will know/recognize most of these names, outside of jack white and maybe gary clark jr. (and he only within certain circles), none of the others really have name recognition. kind of a pretty important part of being any kind of star, much less a rock star.

He certainly would. If Bono walked into a nice restaurant in town, don't tell me every eye wouldn't be on him. Some of the people listed above, not so sure..

In my mind, a "Rock Star" is the guy who lived the crazy life....flashy, sex, drugs, rock & roll. I LOVE Pearl Jam, but Ed has never been "that" guy.

Slash, Mick, Jimmy Page, Axl, Ozzy, Steven Tyler....that's who I instantly think of.

Would have to consider Vince Neil in this group

As I thought about this more, in my mind there is a difference between, "rock star" and "rocker".

"Rock star" is more like the names I mentioned above but when I think of the word "rocker", that's more of how I'd describe Vedder or Grohl. Less flash and glamour.

Just my 2 cents

I'm also not so sure that the actual Q rating/popularity is as important. Johnny Stevens from Highly Suspect is someone I would classify as a "rock star", even though they're no where close to a stadium concert band. Dude fits the drugs, sex, R&R description to a T.
