There are plenty of mediocre-to-bad actors and actresses out there, but every once in awhile, these people put out a performance that is actually quite good.

I think the most obvious example of this would be Tom Arnold in "True Lies." There is absolutely no reason that this should have worked. Prior to this, I'd say Arnold was really only famous as being married to Roseanne Barr. And there is not a single thing he's done since this that is worth noting.

However, his performance in "True Lies" is absolute greatness. I mean, he's so damn good in this role as Arnold's comic relief sidekick. Every scene that he is in he absolutely steals. He even gets the very best line in the entire movie:

This is a once-in-a-lifetime performance from him.

My second example would be Jennifer Lopez in "Out of Sight." Honestly, this is one of my favorite movies. Everything about this movie is perfect. And Lopez makes a wonderful portrayal of Elmore Leonard's literary character of Karen Sisco. She nails the toughness of being a federal marshal while also being sexy as hell. Her chemistry with George Clooney is so good.

While I don't think that J Lo is a particularly bad actress, just that she's always come across more as a "movie star" rather than an actual "actress." More times than not, she's not portraying a character in her movies.she's playing J Lo playing someone else, if that makes sense. That's what makes "Out of Sight" so different for me. She's really good as Karen Sisco.

Who are some other actors that you find mediocre or just plain bad, yet still put out one good performance?

Great topic. I'll have to think about my submissions. Regarding your two suggestions, I couldn't agree more on Tom Arnold. True Lies is one of my favorite all time movies and he is perfect in that role. I thought J. Lo was great in The Cell so she has at least two great movie roles IMO. I haven't seen a lot of movies with her but just throwing that out there. The Cell gets overlooked but it's awesome.

Apparently J Lo was great in Hustlers as well, but I haven't seen it.

Two good choices.

How about Hayden Christensen in Life as a House? I don't know, he may be kickass in everything else, but the only other movies I've seen him in (Star Wars, Jumper) weren't impressive.

Uh have you seen Mchale's Navy? Or The Stupids? Come on now! In all seriousness, this is a great topic.

How's about Wayne Knight in Jurassic Park? His role as Dennis Nedry is just perfect. Not a great actor, but he encompassed that role perfectly.

R. Lee Ermey as the hard ass drill Sargent in Full Metal Jacket would be one for sure.

This is a tough one but Tom Arnold in True Lies is a dang good start. I still remember my parents when I saw this as a kid making comments about how they normally can't stand Tom Arnold but absolutely loved him in this movie

Aaron Paul, Jesse Pinkman. Anything else he's been in, I've thought he was pretty bland/terrible.

Haing S. Ngor in The Killing Fields. He was an OBGYN who never acted prior to that film and won the Oscar for best supporting actor. He did a few minor roles afterwards.

Heath Ledger as The Joker. I thought he was mostly a mediocre actor who mostly did Romcoms, and had an okay role in The Patriot. He knocked it out of the park in The Dark Knight though.

I know Requiem for a Dream may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Marlon Wayans actually put on a good performance in this one compared to the horrible crap he is usually in.

can it be two movies?

If so, Adam Sandler.

He was amazing in Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems.

I think most of his comedies are amusing, but it is not great acting.
It is great one liners and timing

Uncut Gems is awful, it's just yelling the whole movie (sorry but yelling doesn't always equal good acting).

Im not even a Jim Carrey fan and think he's had way more than one good performance. Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind come to mind. Also, Dumb and Dumber is one of the all time great comedies.

Tim Robbins. It's not that I think he's a bad actor, but the only time I ever enjoyed him being in a film was as Andy Dufresne.

No one ever accused Mr. T of being a good actor, but damn if he didn't create one of the most intimidating and memorable characters of my childhood.
