This is why I pretty much discredit anyone that says Tom Hanks isn't a good actor because all he does is play Tom Hanks. What he does is very difficult, and his ability to combine drama and comedy is unmatched by anyone is Hollywood.

Jim Carrey
Tom Hanks

can it be two movies?
If so, Adam Sandler.
He was amazing in Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems.
I think most of his comedies are amusing, but it is not great acting.
It is great one liners and timing

Great in that and meh to bad in everything else, IMO.

I thought he was pretty great in Sweeny Todd. Was definitely surprised by how good his singing voice wasWin At Life said:

I actually don't think it's really that rare. Just off the top of my head, famous actors that have pulled off both dramatic and comedic roles that haven't already been stated:
Jonah Hill
James Franco
Tom Cruise
Joe Pesci
Steve Carrell
Jeff Bridges
Bill Murray
De Niro
Brad Pitt

Lol I walked right into that. But what I mean is anyone big enough for us all to know them probably has 2-3 decent roles at a minimum. To find someone who really only acted well once is really difficult. Maybe a child actor who stopped at a certain point.
Macaulay Culkin comes to mind. The role is so iconic I don't even need to name the movie. Y'all know what I'm talking about.
I think it is easier for a good comedic actor to pull off a dramatic role than the other way around.AustinAg2K said:For whatever reason, comedies get no respect when you talk about good acting (or good writing). Hollywood decided long ago that making people laugh is easy. However, I would argue it's much harder to make everyone laugh than it is to make everyone cry (just give the main character cancer, and half the theater will tear up. Give his dog cancer, and the whole place will be bawling). For years people bagged on guys like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey as bad actors, and they weren't taken seriously as actors until they did dramatic roles. However, a guy like Al Pacino just yells at the camera and they give him an Oscar nomination. Not to say Al Pacino is a bad actor, but if you put him in Dumb and Dumber, the movie is terrible.Chipotlemonger said:
Agreed. Adam Sandler belongs nowhere near this thread.
Being able to pull off a comedic role, even in something considered low brow like Dumb and Dumber or Happy Gilmore, is just as impressive to me as a dramatic role. Actors who can pull off both dramatic roles and comedic roles are actually very rare.
Which is why comedic actors are generally better actors.powerbelly said:I think it is easier for a good comedic actor to pull off a dramatic role than the other way around.AustinAg2K said:For whatever reason, comedies get no respect when you talk about good acting (or good writing). Is Vin Diesel "good" in any live-action roles? Or are most of his Fast & Furious performances good enough to be exempt from this thread?
Ludacris was good in Crash, I thought. The movie itself is what it is, but I think he's kind of found his niche and done well in it.rhutton125 said:
I seem to recall Tyrese Gibson was good in Baby Boy?
Thinking about the Fast & Furious cast. Ludacris isn't bad in those and he's good in Hustle & Flow.

Similarly, Donnie Wahlberg - Band of Brothers.

Advice from a parent: When your kids won't stop bugging you to watch Home Alone over and over, show them a few minutes of the Good Son.Squirrel Master said:He's also pretty great in The Good Son.Drawkcab said:rhutton125 said:
