For whatever reason, comedies get no respect when you talk about good acting (or good writing). Hollywood decided long ago that making people laugh is easy. However, I would argue it's much harder to make everyone laugh than it is to make everyone cry (just give the main character cancer, and half the theater will tear up. Give his dog cancer, and the whole place will be bawling). For years people bagged on guys like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey as bad actors, and they weren't taken seriously as actors until they did dramatic roles. However, a guy like Al Pacino just yells at the camera and they give him an Oscar nomination. Not to say Al Pacino is a bad actor, but if you put him in Dumb and Dumber, the movie is terrible.
Being able to pull off a comedic role, even in something considered low brow like Dumb and Dumber or Happy Gilmore, is just as impressive to me as a dramatic role. Actors who can pull off both dramatic roles and comedic roles are actually very rare.
