Sylvester Stallone in Rocky
I almost posted Stallone in Cop Land, but then thought about the first Rocky. Maybe he really is a good actor who simply got typecast?

I started to post Rocky as well, but ended up deciding that he had too many good roles.

I think he's talented, he just enjoys hamming it up as a meathead action headliner.
I think that's clear given the direction Rambo has taken. The first was a fantastic parable about soldiers coming home and our failure to properly support them as they return to a society that's no longer familiar to them while still haunted by the ghosts of the war they fought in. The rest, uh, not so much.

She definitely doesn't suck in Homeland. The show lasted further than it needed to, but at its best, few shows were better.

sorry but yelling doesn't always equal good acting.
Al Pacino would like a word (spoken very loudly of course).

Either she's truly bat**** crazy or she did a tremendous acting job in Homeland.

Ah, hadn't seen that one. That kind of makes me happy though I really like her. I even liked Romeo + Juliet but I don't think that's a popular opinion

I love Bloodsport (nostalgia) and will watch some of his other movies but, can't say he's ever been great in a movie as an actor.

Have you seen JCVD?

The one in Vietnam or somewhere in SE Asia? Yes that was very good, not only in plot but his acting as a broken expat.

can it be two movies?

If so, Adam Sandler.

He was amazing in Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems.

I think most of his comedies are amusing, but it is not great acting.
It is great one liners and timing

I saw neither of those but I would say Spanglish.

Don't remember what it's called but I really liked him in that movie where his family died on 9/11.

Reign over me. Brutal.

I'd argue when he wants to be serious, he can be a great actor.

PDL
Uncut Gems
Spanglish
... I'll even argue for Click as an actor in the last 30 minutes.

That being said he has gone for the funnies and made money off of that.

I watched Happy Gilmore a few weeks ago and I still laughed the whole time. It was stupid and I recognize the juvenile humor from it, but I can still laugh at him fighting with Bob Barker.

It's good when an actor can pull that off.

Tim Robbins was in the movie Jacobs Ladder. 1990 psychological thriller.
He was also excellent in Mystic River. I knew he was going to get the Oscar nom after the scene where he talks to his wife about vampires.

Just came here to post this. JCVD is fantastic and he really shows that he's a very capable actor and has some range

How's about Wayne Knight in Jurassic Park? His role as Dennis Nedry is just perfect. Not a great actor, but he encompassed that role perfectly.

R. Lee Ermey as the hard ass drill Sargent in Full Metal Jacket would be one for sure.

although I'd say he was good in Seinfeld too.

Mark Hamil? Don't know if voice acting counts, but he played arguably the definitive version of the Joker in Batman the Animated Series.

voice acting is a unique category from screen acting IMO. not saying it's not a great skill and challenge, but on screen has Hamil been in much else?

Lol I walked right into that. But what I mean is anyone big enough for us all to know them probably has 2-3 decent roles at a minimum. To find someone who really only acted well once is really difficult. Maybe a child actor who stopped at a certain point.

Steven Seagal in Under Siege. I guess I wouldn't really say he's good in that movie, but it's watchable. Everything else he has been in is a total joke.

Macaulay Culkin comes to mind. The role is so iconic I don't even need to name the movie. Y'all know what I'm talking about.

For whatever reason, comedies get no respect when you talk about good acting (or good writing). Hollywood decided long ago that making people laugh is easy. However, I would argue it's much harder to make everyone laugh than it is to make everyone cry (just give the main character cancer, and half the theater will tear up. Give his dog cancer, and the whole place will be bawling). For years people bagged on guys like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey as bad actors, and they weren't taken seriously as actors until they did dramatic roles. However, a guy like Al Pacino just yells at the camera and they give him an Oscar nomination. Not to say Al Pacino is a bad actor, but if you put him in Dumb and Dumber, the movie is terrible.

Being able to pull off a comedic role, even in something considered low brow like Dumb and Dumber or Happy Gilmore, is just as impressive to me as a dramatic role. Actors who can pull off both dramatic roles and comedic roles are actually very rare.
