How long do you want to ignore this user?

I'm a few episodes in so far and I'm finding it interesting. Not sure I'll keep up with it however because I use entertainment as an escape from the world and this is crazy heavy into politics.

Anyone else watching?

Caught the first one last night and it pulled me in. Will keep watching the next two that are available.

Read the first couple of the graphic novels and thought it was pretty good. Don't remember any heavy handed politics in it, but that's not surprising with how entertainment integrates things into established sources.

Anyone else read the graphic novels and watch the shows to see how it compares?

The books had always been up there in ones I wanted to get to, but with this series out I'm gonna consume this material via the show.

Certain aspects of the pilot will definitely trigger some F16ers, and yeah, even I'll admit it was a bit on the nose at times in that regard. But overall, I thought it was really well done. It's engaging, beautifully shot, and features just the right amount of gore. Honestly, the only thing I couldn't get past was a guy that passionate about magic having an attractive girlfriend (Kendall's assistant from Succession, surprisingly). Interested to see where it goes, though…

I read the entire run of the graphic novel and it was fantastic. I own the hard back collections of it.

Read the description of the show on Hulu and immediate eye roll when you see "cisgendered" in it. You automatically know they've applied an additional leftist filter that will make it way too on the nose vs what it was in the books.

Just really wish we could return to sanity. Having said that, I'm going to watch the first episode or two and check it out for myself.

Saw the same terminology used in the show description and attributed it to Hulu attempting to head off any questions about whether the deaths affected all men or all cisgender men. Haven't watched episode one yet but will tonight. I've read the graphic novels and I'm definitely interested to see how they port over all the storylines to a series.

Exactly. It's a way of saying that the virus or whatever affects all individuals born biologically male/with a Y chromosome. And that it didn't effect men who were born as women. I have zero issue with that aspect, I believe it's worth noting in the description, and I actually find the prospect compelling of potentially following characters in this world who were born women but are now living as men. But yeah, that particular aspect has nothing to do with a "leftist filter."

My only real complaint is the portrayal of the short-lived male president, who's basically the laziest caricature of a Republican president you can imagine, played by the most vanilla/networky white guy actor ever. Luckily, though, because of the nature of the premise, we don't have to deal with him for long.

Overall, bottom line, there was no way that a version of this show, in 2021, could focus primarily on the last man on earth in world full of women, as I understand the comic did. So they've simply amped up the focus on the female characters as well. Now, one could certainly argue that in that case, they shouldn't have bothered even adapting it, which is a fair point. That said, while I have my minor issues with the pilot, the show really is incredibly well done so far, and worth at least giving it shot. I'm diving into episode two and maybe three tonight, and am genuinely looking forward to it...

They could have just used "straight guy".

Done.

Except that it's more complicated than that.

For instance, a woman born a man who is dating a woman could technically be considered "straight."

"Cisgendered" is the clearest, most concise terminology. It's not Hulu's fault the term triggers certain people.

There are men and women. Everything else is cosplay.

Y'all are welcome for me F16ing this up.

We can move on. I may watch Ep 1 tonight and I'll give an objective opinion. I promise.

Last thing I'll say on the subject...

When people suffer from actual chemical imbalances that they can't help or control, be it in their bodies or their brains, I simply choose to have empathy for them instead of mocking their plights as "cosplay." Do some of them take it too far and try to shove extreme agendas down our throats? Absolutely. In fact, I was talking to my neighbor this morning, and she was telling me how she had a recent playground meetup with other moms of two and three-year-olds in Silver Lake (which is basically the Brooklyn of LA). And there were a couple of moms saying how they're trying to raise their kids as "gender fluid" but expressed legit disappointment that their sons were already starting to show "signs of masculinity." Now, those types of people can f/ck all the way off and I hope like hell sh/t like that is just part of a relatively brief performative phase we're going through as a society. (For the record, my neighbor said she's officially done with that particular group of moms.)

All that said, there ARE people in the world who suffer from legit chemical imbalances in their bodies that are tied to legit emotional and chemical reactions in their brains, who aren't at all trying to shove any kind of "agenda" down our throats. They simply want to live as the gender they feel biological "called" to live. So why on earth would we not have empathy for those people and respect that? Why would we reduce them to freaks and group them in with the insane, performative Silver Lake moms of the world?

Anyway, that's obviously a long, off-topic tangent.

I promise you, at least in the pilot, none of this gender stuff is even mentioned, and the political stuff isn't all that prominent. It really is just a solid, engaging, well-made show. At least so far, as I could very well change my opinion after another episode or two tonight.

Lmao. I just watched the pilot. We will see.

Better title would have been SoyboY: The Last Man.

It's a little goofy and hard to take serious, but I'll stick around for another episode.

It's been years since I read the comic but i would say the claim that the comic was insufficient in it' focus on its female characters as unfair and rooted in ignorance.

One of my favorite scifi stories. I'll give it a shot when I finish what I'm currently on but I've learned to not get too excited about my favorite comic/book properties getting turned into movies or shows. Supposedly this thing has a plan for 5 seasons but I will be shocked if it finishes. So many adapted stories get left unfinished.

Shia LaBeouf was once attached to the movie version, and then FX actually shot a different pilot (with a completely different creative team) with Barry Keoghan as Y (you'd probably recognize him from Dunkirk and Eternals) that they ultimately scrapped. I don't particularly dislike this latest guy, but he does kind of seem like the generic, bargain bin version compared to the previous two name actors.

Agree with most of this except the "beautifully shot" and uncalled for dig at illusionists.

Nothing stood out with the cinematography.

Agreed. There are female story lines along with Yorick's.

I have not watched it yet. I was catching up on Titans last night.

I think the term "cisgendered" is a very very long way from clear and concise as I would imagine at least 50% of the population would need to google the term to have any idea what it means.

With 74% of FX's demo being below 54, I'm going to guess that the majority of the FX streaming audience knows what cisgendered means.

That's gonna be a negative from me but I also just don't give a rats ass to learn about any of the terms. I am socially liberal and believe in do what makes you happy, but it's all become so complicated and dramatic that I just don't care about all the new terms and what they mean.

It would seem simpler for the smaller group to have a label than labelling the larger group with a new word most aren't aware of.

So instead of calling transgender men and women just "men and women," then labelling the other 99.4% of the population cisgender, just call them a transgender man or a transgender woman, and the rest of the population is just "men and women".

Seems like a simpler solution. But hey, I've always thought any transgender debate in the mainstream zeitgeist is pretty foolish. It's just so much attention and anger on both sides being given arguing over such a small minority of the population.

Getting back on topic, A few episodes in, and I do like the show so far.

I know this is shocking to a lot of people on here but

Sex, sexuality and gender are 3 independent characteristics and 2 of them arent binary.

For example, Roger Stone is male, but a little gay and a little transgender.

Maybe they should change the title to Human: The Last Y. Then you don't have to use cisgendered. He is the last homosapien with a Y chromosome.

And I'm telling you that myself, and a lot of others don't care. Be gay, don't be gay, wear a dress, or not, whatever. The social media epidemic in this country has pushed needy people to create definitions and force them to be acknowledged in a vain attempt to feel unique.

It's the same amount of disdain I feel for people who insist on calling themselves dog moms.

I finished the first episode and it did enough to rope me into watching the next one. I'm not wild about the actor playing Yorrick, but maybe he'll grow on me.

None of the concerns several folks have raised here about the liberal values or agenda seemed even remotely present in the show itself, so I'd recommend giving it a watch if you have a free hour.
