This.

The conversation has gone so far astray of what's actually in the show. I was initially only referring to the lazy caricature of a Republican President, which is such a minor note in the pilot itself, while the whole "cisgender" thing that was brought up isn't even mentioned in the show. It was just part of some description.

I finished episode two last night, and it remains a solid effort that's definitely holding my attention.

Certain aspects of the pilot will definitely trigger some F16ers, and yeah, even I'll admit it was a bit on the nose at times in that regard. But overall, I thought it was really well done. It's engaging, beautifully shot, and features just the right amount of gore. Honestly, the only thing I couldn't get past was a guy that passionate about magic having an attractive girlfriend (Kendall's assistant from Succession, surprisingly). Interested to see where it goes, though…

Agree with most of this except the "beautifully shot" and uncalled for dig at illusionists.

Nothing stood out with the cinematography.

Definitely going to push back on the cinematography. It's shot better than 90% of television out there, actually looks *cinematic*, and has a nice, blockbuster feel. I think it looks great, especially compared to all the flat, harshly lit digital crap that's out there now.

I take your word for it. I mean I didn't turn it off because it looked bad but your post made me think you thought it was on par with Children of Men

Read the description of the show on Hulu and immediate eye roll when you see "cisgendered" in it. You automatically know they've applied an additional leftist filter that will make it way too on the nose vs what it was in the books.

Saw the same terminology used in the show description and attributed it to Hulu attempting to head off any questions about whether the deaths affected all men or all cisgender men. Haven't watched episode one yet but will tonight. I've read the graphic novels and I'm definitely interested to see how they port over all the storylines to a series.

Why would that be a question anyone thinks to ask.

Because the title is a double entendre.

Too bad it glosses over every single thing men do in the world. Without men, there is no functional modern civilization, period. Why? Because of this:

https://archive.fo/2017.01.30-051519/http://judgy*****.com/2013/09/17/what-would-happen-if-no-men-showed-up-for-work-today/

Quote:

First up, the entire power grid is down. 100% of power plant operators, distributors, and dispatchers are men. Now, it's possible that there are a few women working in these occupations, but however many there are, they do not make up even 1% of the total workforce, so statistically, 100% of the workforce is male.
91% of the nation's electrical engineers are men, and if they don't show up for work, there is no one to monitor and manage the nation's electrical supplies. Assuming some automation (designed by men, naturally) kicks in for the day, we had all better pray there are no problems. 97.6% of electrical power line installers and maintenance workers are men.
Lights out, ladies and gentlemen.
Don't bother turning on your taps, either. Or flushing your toilets. 95.5% of water and liquid waste treatment plant and system operators are men.
Think you might be able to get out of town for the one day the men don't show up?
Think again.
Planes are out.
95.9% of aircraft pilots and flight engineers are men. If you happen to find a plane with a female pilot, don't get too excited. 98.4% of aircraft mechanics and service technicians are men. You can, however, be assured of your comfort as you sit on a pilotless aircraft that has no mechanic for pre-flight clearance, because 77.6% of flight attendants are female.
Should you be lucky enough to find a female pilot and a female technician to clear you for take-off, you still have some praying to do. Statistically, 0% of airtraffic controllers and airfield operations specialists are women.
http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat11.htm
Of course, that doesn't mean there are ZERO ladies working in air traffic control. There just aren't enough to constitute even 1% of the workforce.
Trains, of course, are also out.
100% of locomotive engineers and operators are men, as are 100% of the workers who operate railroad brake, signals and switches. 94.4% of railway yardmasters are men, but if you chance upon a female yardmaster, it won't help you much. She can't operate the trains.
You might have better luck with bus drivers, almost half of whom are women.
But the streets are likely to be chaos. And there won't be anyone on hand to help you navigate that.
87.4% of police and sheriff's patrol officers are men. 96.6% of firefighters are men. 68.8% of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics are men, so if it all goes tits up and you get hurt, there's a small chance you might make it to a hospital.
I hope you don't get too badly hurt, though. 65.7% of all surgeons are men.
Maybe you should just work from home? In the dark, mind you. With no running water.
Uh-oh. Looks like that might be a problem, too.
For all computer and mathematical occupations combined, 74.4% of the workforce is male. Computer network architects, who design and implement all our computer based communications systems are 91.9% men. And 94.2% of radio and telecommunications equipment installers and repair technicians are men.
Looks like that plan is ****ed.
Hope it doesn't get too hot, or too cold the day men don't show up for work. Even if you had power, which you don't, you would be hard-pressed to get anyone in to take a look at your wonky air-conditioner or furnace.
98.4% of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers are men.
Oh well. Guess you'll have to mosey on down to the local caf, which has no power either, but what's logic and consequence anyways? Be careful when you step over all that accumulating garbage! Remember that most EMTs are men, and they've taken the day off. Don't want to get hurt now.
Most garbage collectors are men, too. 93.4%, to be exact.
You'll need to stop at the bank first, for a little cash injection.
Oops. Don't bother.
The machine hasn't been filled with money today. 81.5% of security guards and gaming surveillance officers are men. It's unlikely the banks would be functioning anyways, with no men at work. 72.1% of all securities, commodities and financial services sales agents are men. 72.6% of the nation's CEOs would be taking the day off, along with 70.9% of all the general and operations managers.
Don't count on getting a weather report today. Statistically, 0% of the nation's atmospheric and space scientists are women.
Actually, don't plan on acquiring pretty much anything today. The workers in the entire production, transportation and material moving occupations are 78.2% men. Not only will no goods be moving on the day men go on strike, they won't be made, period. 82.4% of all the industrial production managers are men.
Nothing will be built or extracted from the earth in terms of raw materials. 97.5% of that workforce is male.
Nothing will be installed, maintained or repaired. 96.8% of that workforce is male.
If men took a collective day off, we would instantly be without power, without the means to communicate, without protection, without water, without trucks bringing us the food and products we take for granted, because men are the ones who provide all those things.

Just replace "didn't show up" with "suddenly died horribly while the equipment was already in motion, leading to mass carnage".

This means no electricity, no plumbing, no computers, no water systems, no engineers, no blue collar workers, no resource gathering, etc. Without men, 99.9% of women will die in the first year. Any sort of debating about politics or political systems is irrelevant because none of that will matter.

The comic this is based on does not gloss over just how terrible the world is like the show. It's a feminist comic to be sure, but they don't hide the fact that the world is in complete shambles without men.

All of the things mentioned above? They would lose within the very first day or week of the men all dying.

I can't take these types of shoes seriously when they gloss over that nearly 100% of all important jobs in the world are done by men alone.

Who are you gripping at?

Have you watched a single minute of the show past the pilot yet?

Or do you just like to *literally* mansplain into the ether?

Because everything you so weirdly and so passionately outlined is EXACTLY what the show is about. The whole world goes to sh*t. The food supply is severely dwindled, the power grid is down, the subways are flooded, etc. Like, the PREMISE of the show so far is that there are no men to do all this stuff anymore, and the women are hanging on by a thread, struggling to maintain any semblance of order.

Finished the first three available episodes...

- Y himself definitely sucks. I was on the fence before, and I get the arc they're setting up for him, but man, he's straight up annoying and not someone I want to root for at all.

- The storyline with the former presidential aid and her daughter is by far my least favorite, though. I could not care less about anything having to do with them.

- I dread every time the former president's daughter (Amber Tamblyn) shows up, and her whole dynamic is way too on the nose.

Just give me Diane Lane as a struggling president in a post-apocalyptic world, sending Agent 355 on covert missions, and I'd be all the way in. I'm going to keep watching for those aspects alone, but this show is on a very short leash with me from here on out.

Done with the three now, too. It clicked for me about Yorick somewhere in the third episode - he is meant to suck. And I don't think just to setup an arc. A show like this obviously will do a lot of gender criticism, and, unless I'm forgetting some things, Y has zero agency. Cleary on purpose as he's the typical damsel in distress but gender flipped because… well, the whole plot. I'm kinda liking it with that realization, as I don't really watch his scenes for him but for everyone else around him (and b/c there will be some arc over the season and those to come).

The first daughter is absolutely annoying but seems to be the closest thing to a villain we have so will save judgment until her plot thickens and maybe we get to see her get offed. (Although, the plot itself is interesting enough I don't really need any villains - similar to Walking Dead: I didn't need a Negan or any of those other big bads, as the world itself and our characters struggles within it are interesting enough.)

But, Agent ### is absolutely incredible. The character and the actor playing her are setting her up to be an all time character. At the very least THE character you watch the show for - i can see her easily becoming the Tyrion Lannister, Amos Burton, or Ari Gold, of the show.

Oh, and the soundtrack is great.

Caught the latest episode. I'm pretty sure these shows work because everyone is an idiot and it makes the viewer feel superior. No one wants a show where everyone acts sensibly apparently.

No sloppy political caricatures in this episode, but I want to strangle Hero and Yorick. You can really tell that they grew up spoiled as hell. The agent is the only smart person in a sea of morons.

Good point about the lack of need for a villain. I dropped out of Walking Dead with the intro of Negan. It just the appeal at that point.

Also great point on the Damsel in distress gender flip. I didn't realize it but yeah, I was thinking "how the hell is this guy supposed to be a hero". Now that I've recast him in my mind as more of a McGuffin than a hero, the show is a lot more interesting.

That's what it always was. Yorick was basically just a lens through which the readers got to see this particular dystopian world. Most of the interesting parts were what the various groups of women have done in the absence of men (and what happens when they're confronted with the only living male left) with a small amount being devoted to trying to figure out what the hell caused it all/how to "save the world". It's basically The Last of Us except Joel is a black chick dragging around someone with even fewer survival skills than a teenage girl. At least comic Yorick had some humor, this version is just sad so far.

So would any new male born also die? Seems like they could just use the loads of sperm stored all over the place to inseminate women and rebuild. Obviously they would have to get to it before it goes bad due to aforementioned power issues.

Was curious about that. Yorick in the comic was actually a pretty entertaining character. He was snarky, self-deprecating, and funny. Kind of similar to Everett K Ross in the Black Panther comics who also, coincidentally, was not portrayed in the movies at all like he was in the comics.

My point was that through society, including media, religion and the arts, I have been conditioned to automatically assume that the lead male character in a show like this would be the hero. Especially one with this title.

I needed the idea that the male could be a burden to the salvation of humankind due to ineptitude to be specificly called out in order to even consider it.

Now, had he been a maniacal/evil/sociopathic character that was threatening to future of humanity, I'd have pick up on it instantly and thought it was lazy writing
Fenrir
How long do you want to ignore this user?
So far there isn't any humor to the show but it's still in the more serious beginnings of the comic (though I doubt the ability of this actor to do anything to break the tension). Agent 355 casting is pretty great though so far at least, that will carry this show for a while hopefully. More than anything though, the DC drama makes this into a completely different show than what the comic was about. WAY too much time is spent on the White House drama. It's going to drag this series down, imo. If they continue the level of focus on the DC drama, the pacing of this show is going to be glacial and the tone is going to lack any amount of humor that the comic had.

On the positive side I really enjoyed the slow build up in the first episode. Seems like these types of stories where you get to see the world get turned upside down it always jumps straight to the sudden turn, this had a feel of dread building for most of the episode for me. Lets people that aren't familiar with the story learn a little bit about characters before SHTF too.

Ampersand is so distracting to me in every scene he is in.

Damn, this is getting good. Episode four was great. At first I didn't want an on-the-road, Walking-Dead-type vibe - it just feels like we've seen that a thousand times - but it ended up being a nice, character-driven break from the DC stuff, and got super compelling there toward the end. At this point, I think they've got me for the season.

The on-the-road angle was nice because it opened up the world, unlike Walking Dead which just kept doubling down on the depressed nature of that world. Getting to see the market, some scavengers, a new group of potential baddies - good stuff.

And Yorick is sorta starting to get better.

I know many of the Teaxags don't like the trans stuff, but I thought it added to the episode, in particular with how well they wrote the dialogue around it. Sam telling the Jen Psaki character "you figure it out" when she wondered about him was well done in how quick and efficient it was.
