Starts Friday, and I'm super curious to see if they can actually pull this off. At the very least, it looks like one of the most expensive shows ever made...

It's a series I've read multiples time and am excited for this adaptation. It's going to be hard I think to make it work but AppleTV has put out some great stuff so hopefully that continues.

Been 20+ years since I've read books but really looking forward to this. I found it fascinating the rooms full of equations that predict the future. Interested to see how they bring that to life.

Same here. One of the things I appreciate about Asimov's writing is his efficiency with his prose. Foundation is close to being a screenplay as is. That's in stark contrast to Herbert, of course.

I haven't read these books either. I've only heard that they're "unadaptable."

I don't know that I'd say Foundation is unadaptable. The story is on a truly enormous scale but ... (adding spoiler if you don't want to know about the book structure - no actual story spoilers below)

the time jumps between Seldon events actually sets up the story nicely for individual episodes that aren't rushed, especially if some of the events are two parters.

Anyway, it's a great series and I am really pumped to see how the series handles the content. Could be really awesome. I'll definitely be watching.

Agreed. Structure spoilers - It's more of an anthology of loosely connected stories than a single through plotline.

I can honestly say that the "most enjoyment for the buck" streaming subscriptions we have are Apple TV+ and Disney.

Really don't read this next part unless you want the whole thing spoiled. This was your warning.

The big problem is going to be setting up the statistical nature of Psychohistory and its inherent flaws while implying it is omniscien. They need to leave hints but can't make it too obvious that it has a lot of problems so that the eventual payoff of the Mule wrecking things and twist that the existence of a Second Foundation having psychic powers feels like a natural and expected course of events.

There's a lot of great story for the whole thing and many stories within stories taht I think are timeless and are going to be great.

In the end though, I felt like I was so invested in the galaxy being restored that when Trevize chose Gaia and then they ran into Olivaw, which I only knew from reading Asimovs other books, that it felt like, "Where the hell did all of this come from?" I know he wrote it over 40+ years so I hope writers streamline it all a lot better than Asimov did. Either they gotta end the series when Trevize chooses Gaia which is a great ending point but feels a little random and or they're going to have to introduce Daneel Olivaw at some point organically into the story.

It's not a novel. It's a series of threaded short stories or novellas. That's what makes it unfilmable for the theater. Episodic would have a better chance.

and the parts of the story they seem to show line up more with the 2 pre novels than Foundation itself. Those were set during Seldon's life rather than the 10 page intro he actually gets plus the periodic appearances in the vault. Those prenovels were unusual trying to tie in R Daneel Olivaw in.

Loved the original books as they are peak high science fiction.

What I didn't love was the philosophy. Determinism always wins. Even when free will brings short term chaos, it's the bad guy, and eventually the arc of history bends back to a path plotted by an invisible elite. Not sure how you make great TV out of that with characters that the audience will root for

Unrelated, I picked up the three last books at a library book sale last weekend. Are they any good?

Also, I think the show itself debuts in just under three hours. Doesn't Apple usually release their episodes at midnight eastern?

The reference to "new characters, romances, and rivalries" killed my interest. Probably a little unfair, as most of the plot line of the books is pretty high level, but still.
