Most interesting thing out of this thread for me is concluding I have no desire to ever read this series.

I read the main trilogy a few years ago and remember enjoying it enough that I'm considering a reread. I wouldn't let 2 episodes of the show shape your opinion of a series that's been hugely popular for decades.

I've actually started it before and couldn't get into it.

This show looks pretty good I am considering signing up for Apple TV+ to watch it. What other shows are worth watching on there?

The best comparison I can think of is imagine watching game of thrones but in season 1 there's just humans and no mentions of anything fantasy. And then in season 2 everyone is suddenly talking about dragons as if they've always been a thing and you're retconning dragons into the narrative, and then season 3 everyone is suddenly talking about white walkers as if they've always been a thing and you're retconning white walkers into the narrative.
True Blood is the example you are looking for.

Watched the first episode last night, TCTSS pretty much nailed all my thoughts about it in his long post. I feel like everything that was squished into the first episode could have been expanded into a really interesting full 10 episode season on its own. I'm interested enough to keep going for now, we'll see how far i make it.

Ha. Good example. That show was ridiculously stupid while being fun though.

For all mankind and mythic quest are also pretty good. I'm still not sure how I feel about See.

The Morning Show is great for what it is (essentially a slick, circa 2005 NBC drama with cussing).

Just finished ep 2, I'm digging it.

I tried to read the books a long time ago and lost interest quickly.

I wish they'd say f the haters and go all in on the hard sci-fi angle, but I realize they'd never do that on a big budget show going for mass appeal.

That scene where the star city and stalk were bombed and stalk crashed down to the planet surface was amazing. It's like it was falling in slow motion, then you're reminded the scale of it as it was stretching out across the planet. 100 million people died. Wow. Mentioned later 40 trillion people lived in inner planners alone. Humanity has really grown and spread out!

Liked the shout out to Asimov's Robot books when they mentioned there was an imperial apple orchard as old as the robot wars. Did they say how long that was? Don't remember Foundation books crossing over with Robot books so I think that's a detail added for the show.

The Imperial jump ships looked pretty cool when they created a mini black hole or something to bend space/time. I just hope they're not a shout out to a video game.

Would have liked to see the show get more into the details of psychohistory, how it works, how long it's been around, what has it predicted, how has it grown into a movement that the Empire feels threatened by, etc. instead we get a guy doodling on a fancy iPad then boldly proclaiming "the Empire is dying".

Overall I liked it and will keep watching but I'm not as enthused about it like I was for The Expanse (best sci-fi show of the past 25 years).

There's 7 or so Foundation books, written out of order, and the fourth of fifth one he wrote suddenly shoehorns in robots and confirms the Foundation takes place far in the future after the Robots series. There's zero mention of them in the first 3-4 books he wrote, but then they become an important part of the narrative.

Ep3:

Loved the Cleon story line, very interesting and tragic the struggle with mortality and the eternal android.

With Terminus I don't like how they just didn't address the killing of Harry and the ejection of Gaal at the end of Ep2 which I thought was pretty intense and gripping.

Other than that some good set up.

Was not a fan of this episode except for the Cleon bits. I'm starting to be slightly concerned like most others on this thread. There's also not a lot of activity here…

This episode finally feels like the producers/writers have figured out the show. Lee Pace is firing on all cylinders, and the Terminus plot line is starting to gel.

Yes Ep 4 was great. If they can continue that momentum forward I think the season can finish strong.

Just caught up and I like this show alot! Haven't read any of the books so no idea where this is heading but i was interested to learn that the Triple Clone Emperors was a show creation? If so, that's a great wrinkle. I'm fascinated with Dawn/Day/Dusk.

I did have 1 question; I didn't quite understand why Gaal waking up during warp speed was a big deal? Not sure if i missed something.

For now, just realize she's different and that is not the normal thing for normal humans to do. She and the show have made several other allusions to this too

I have faithfully watched all 6 episodes of this so far. I have to say I'm very confused as to why they called it Foundation as it bears no resemblance to the novel at all. 6 episodes, 4.5 hours in. And they have used 4 names from the novel and literally made everything else up on the fly. I can't decide if I'm put out by what they did or if I should marvel at the sheer hubris of stealing the name of the novel. Nobody has to worry about being a book reader who needs to use spoiler tags here.

Yeah. I'm done with the show after six episodes. They turned Foundation into a beautiful show with bad sci-fi channel-level writing. It's cringeworthy.

As opinions on the prequels/sequels to Frank Herbert's original series of Dune books show, the kid seems unable to truly understand the parent's work and therefore produces garbage.

I've been lukewarm to this series because, despite having never read the Foundation series, I suspected this show was being pulled out of someone's ass. Visually, the show is fantastic, but story-wise, it seems a bit of a mixed bag. There are certainly some good things going on in there, but overall, I'm just not that invested.

My feed froze during the last episode and I haven't gone back to it yet. Not sure if I will or not. This is not the Foundation I wanted.

Really I'm not even 100% sure what this show is about. Maybe that is because I keep looking for certain people or certain things to happen and this not giving me that.

As someone who could not get into the books I find it a good show. A lot of exploration of the trouble with eternity in the human psyche and I find the faulty clone teen interesting.

I love the Dawn/Day/Dusk story lines so far and Lee Pace is mesmerizing. I am also intrigued with Hari and Gaals 'journey' but the ENTIRE terminus invasion with the Anachreons seeking to hijack a super weapon is just awful.

Foundation is warp speeding into action and stakes that are completely un-earned. I literally laughed when Hugo (had to look up his name lol) just missed his jump and flew off into space. I have no emotional connection to any of these characters and the show is suffering massively because of it.

Co-signing this. There are some pretty compelling parts (I like the Dawn story in particular) but they have been too wrapped up in the mystery boxes. I mean there's the literal mystery box (the Vault), what's Hari's plan, what's the deal with Gaal, what's the deal with Salvor, etc. There's no narrative continuity because they jump around so much trying to delay reveals/set up cliffhangers.

That said, I'm still watching, and I'll probably watch Season 2 (already picked up) because there's enough interesting stuff there to be worth my time. Also, the podcast with the creator (hosted by Jason Concepcion, formerly of The Ringer/Binge Mode) is pretty interesting.

Its funny because the action seems unearned but at the same time, this season is moving at a snail's pace.

The Salvor story has taken the entire season, but it's only like 30-40 pages in the book. Get on with the story!

On a different note, the whole point of psychohistory is that it predicts human behaviors in the aggregate, and it's such a great reveal with the Salvor story line when you realize that Hardin understood that the four neighboring planets would attack, that the foundation would realize that it isn't about the encyclopedia and instead the goal was the foundation society. That sets up the next series of stories so well because there's this sense of inevitability vs doubt that they're still following the plan . And instead we're bogged down by stories of people who seem to have some kind of mutation like prescience or immunity to the spire, or whatever. It's more about individuals than the inevitability of science, which kinda turns the story on its head in a not good way. Also feels like it's going to cheapen what happens with the mule, where there is a being Seldon couldn't predict.

Agree 100%. The show writers seem to totally be missing the foundational (hah-hah!) concepts of the entire series.
