I don't understand what Leo's affair with Cate Blanchett added to anything? The movie felt long to me and I feel like all of the Leo/Cate stuff could have been cut. I guess they were setting for a redemptive ending for Leo but didn't make any sense to me.

Very disappointing movie. Forget the climate change stuff, they didn't even make a good movie.

I enjoyed it. Definitely dragged the last hour. First hour was great build up. Mid credits scene was hilarious. Not as bad as Mars Attacks and not as good as Wag the Dog. Not as good as the big short or Veep. The whole montage near the end showing the left and right using competing slogans should have been much funnier than it was - great premise that fell flat. But the opening scenes with the White House meeting and morning talk show were hilarious. And I loved all the Big Tech satire - nailed it

Have we talked about the huge orgy scene on the rooftop restaurant near the end?? I almost missed it but was like "hold up was that someone eating ass?" and hit the rewind button and paused on it. Made me lol.

I enjoyed the film but it was kinda long. Definitely a not so subtle parody of just about everything in our society.

Having watched the movie, it is pretty funny looking through the thread to see who didn't like it...and where they normally post.

Movie was pretty funny overall, not many actual laugh out loud moments. Starting to wonder if Adam McKay only has one style of movie making, though.

They should have called it "Idiocracy 2: Don't Look Up"

They pretty much made fun of just about everyone (Right and Left) in this movie. The wife and I enjoyed it for what it was.

For something to be funny, there has to have a bit of truth to it. This movie was very good at depicting the absurd by being absurd. Some of the absurdity hit the nail on the head.

Our world has really become a clown show to the point that even the clowns know it…

Dude, just stop. Like stated above, all you did was prove that climate change does in fact exist and has indeed affected weather patterns.

But keep up that same ol' rhetoric! It's certainly worked the past 20 years.

Funny how mankind has completely reversed the cooling of the planet and now warmed it in only 40 years.

Quite an accomplishment for humanity, actually.

But please, keep up the current rhetoric. It's only a complete 180 from "science" mere decades ago.

Wow that's surprising. I didn't expect it to get amazing reviews or anything, but that's pretty bad. I may have to pass on this one.

It's not. There were maybe 2 guys arguing for "global cooling" while everyone else was concerned about global warming. Focus on the mediocre film, please.

Just finished it, and it was awful, outside of the last 20 minutes,
I have a headache from being beaten over the head with their "themes". Even if I agree with a lot of what they were trying to say,
And note to Adam McKay, satire only works when it feels like it has a hint of realism or is so farcical as to not be possible. This was neither.
And how this thread turned into a "debate" on global warming is baffling since it wasn't even mentioned in the film.
And the fact that the film has a 7,3 on IMDB basically proves that eveyry point the movie tried to make is real. Which is pretty ironic.

TLDR - I was rooting for the asteroid after about 20 minutes.

The meteor or comet or asteroid or whatever is meant to represent the inevitability of climate change; something thought to be catastrophic and planet-altering, that most of the world doesn't give a sh*t about. This has been mentioned an infinite number of times across approximately 13 million interviews given by McKay, the cast, etc.

I still haven't seen the movie for myself, as it sounds A) horrible, and B) like McKay failed spectacularly at getting his "message" across.

Well if it's a metaphor then they failed at that too. They went after:

Musicians
Print media
Broadcast media
The wealthy
Political division
Conservative media
Vapid political leaders
Social media
A small dig at Hollywood
Money in politics
Self important business tycoons
Easily swayed populace to dumb ideas
Political nepotism

But they didn't take the time to reference their actual point apparently outside of a small scene towards the end that only lightly touched it. Which is why I liked the last few minutes, it was the only time the movie said anything remotely interesting.

The one running gag I did like though, was JL's obsession with the general and the snacks. That was funny to me.

I didnt take it that way, seemed like a fairly average movie making fun of the whole politician/social media/hollywood/media/academia/military bureaucracy, and pointing out how ****ing moronic they all are.

Finally watching, 45 minutes in, and while it's definitely unfunny, it's still watchable, if not mildly entertaining. So far, at least. Or maybe my expectations were just as low as they could possibly be. But yeah, either way, I don't get how McKay missed this bad on the humor…

The main problem is that this all just so obvious. It's saying absolutely nothing we didn't already know about the world, made even more annoying by how big and over the top it all is. I really don't understand the point at all.

Also, I'm an hour in now and have absolutely no idea how they're going to fill the next hour and twenty two minutes. Feels like half an hour of story left, tops. Never a good sign.

Chalomet's character is the funniest part of the whole movie, but thats not until near the end[

That was… fine. Definitely not good, but not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Basically, anyone saying this is complete trash is overreacting, and those calling it a modern-day Dr. Strangelove are idiots.

How often do you post on TA while watching a film for the first time?

I didn't think it was awful, but I did fall asleep after about 90min. Woke up the next morning and finished it. I was somewhat hoping the meteor would deteriorate once it got to Earth and be the size of. Bus or something that landed on the White House and destroyed all of D.C. or something.

This film had potential but man it just didn't deliver when it needed to.

One we all agree it wasn't good, then parsing awful vs. Boring vs. not good is kinda pointless.
And as I thought about it after last night, I think I understand where some of the subconscious backlash comes from. If a whole bunch of wealthy Hollywood actors are going to tell the whole world all the things we are doing wrong, then it better be really clever, or it just comes across as self important. Which I think this movie was.
I don't read reviews before I see something so as not to prejudice myself, but the interviews I read after watching had McKay treating this almost like his opus and his grand statement. That false sense of reality came through in the movie and was much of what was wrong with it. It tried way too hard.

I agree with this. It was a decent movie, kind of dumb, semi entertaining, had some funny moments, but wouldnt watch it again. Not the worst movie ive ever seen but not the best, just average.

It just felt like a worse version of The Big Short

Outside of a few Marvel movies, I find casts that are stuffed with big stars don't make for good movies. If the movie could stand on its own they wouldn't have to throw money at award winners to get some hype for the movie.

Exceptions:

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

Cannonball Run

In 100% agreement that the left is truly terrible at messaging... "global warming," "defund the police," etc, I could go on and on. I also agree that we have no hope in stopping whatever's coming. Instead, we should be putting money and resources toward living with it/preparing for it, in whatever ways we can, as opposed to trying to reverse it by spending/regulating our way out of it.

As to whether it's man-made... I don't know. On one hand, there's absolutely no way the pollution we've been putting into the air isn't affecting the environment in some really bad ways. That said, yes, as noted above, this can also be cyclical/natural as well.

Ultimately, I just wish the left would acknowledge that we can't spend/regulate our way out of it, and I wish the right would quit acting like nothing's happening (man-made or not). Instead, if the two sides could come together and work toward some kind of socioeconomic/infrastructural preparation plan - or, at least, contingency plan - we'd be in much better shape when/if sh*t finally does hit the fan at some point this century.
Holy Carp! TCTTS posted something that wasn't stupid!

I'm not even going to comment on the rest of these topics because this gave me hope in humanity, again.

I enjoyed it for what it was.

I didn't know the meteor was supposed to be a metaphor about climate change, so that missed its mark.
