I'll bite. I think his influence and star power is undeniable. From the hits in his hey day to his look and skill. He had an amazing run from 82 to 91ish, and some of the songs from that era will be timeless and around forever. However it's hard to ignore that he didn't really put anything of note out from 91 to 16. So to have a run of about 20 albums in your catalogue that most fans and the general public ignore entirely it's fair to say he's a little overrated.

Word. He also wrote some of the biggest pop songs of all-time for other artists and literally every single reference track was better than the song that blew up. "Nothing Compares 2 U" sung by Sinead O'Connor is a great example.

This can be said for just about every artist/band that has been around for decades.

Elton John for example, or Paul McC. Many mega super star artists/bands continue to put out largely unnoticed music.

Your example of Prince having 20 unnoticed albums is just a testament to how prolific he was.

Prince could do everything MJ could and more, so there's that. He was the musician, the writer, the producer..

MJ clearly sold more records.. but lots of crap artists sell a lot of records.

Did they both sing? Sure. But MJ was one of the best vocalists (and dancers) of all time.

Wrong. Radiohead is probably the most overrated.

Bob Dylan is great. Pop in Highway 61 Revisited or Bringing it All Back Home and just let them roll.

Most of Prince's music doesn't do much for me, but he was insanely talented and prolific, if anything he doesn't get enough respect for his musicianship and songwriting.

I'm in the camp that much of music past the '80s does nothing for me (at least what little I've heard).

However, he was a total badass m'fer, so I don't think he's overrated even though I don't like everything he did.

Prince is possibly the most talented performer of all time. That doesn't make him the best, but nobody has ever had the combination of musicianship, dancing ability, singing and song writing than him. His vocal range is incredible. His music may not be for you, but to say he can't sing is crazy.
