Overrated?

Purple Rain
Let's Go Crazy
When Doves Cry
Little Red Corvette
1999
Kiss
Raspberry Beret
7
Darling Nikki
Diamonds and Pearls
Cream
Thieves in the Temple

That's off the top of my head.

And he introduced the world to the greatest band of all time, MORRIS DAY AND THE MOTHER EFFIN TIME!

Don't forget P***Y Control. That would get the girls on the floor at Tonix and Harry's.

I don't know. I guess I need to know what he's rated.

Are we talking pop or funk or R&B or all musicians?

I have him rated somewhere between Johannes Brahms and Debbie Gibson.

Prince is cool, not over-rated.

My own reasons are 1) that he was a great guitar player and B) Purple Rain and lastly, his mystique is up there with masked Kiss. What was his real name? Did he like girls or boys? Was he rock or pop? Black or white? What was with the symbol? Where did his guitar go in that one live video? How did he make it rain at the Super Bowl halftime? Freakin' Prince, bro.

Opened this thread to post this video. Glad to see someone beat me it it! The slight strut off the stage at the end kills me. I also think that guitar he hurled is still ascending to this day…

I'd guess MJ and Prince met each other a few times. Bet that was weird, because no matter what their sexual preference, they have to have been wondering if the other guy fits the bill.

Mind boggling thread.

Pretty sure the roadie behind him caught it.

Wasn't behind him. It was in the pit in front of the stage and it was a perfect toss to his guitar tech a guy named Takumi. The toss appeared to go up and maybe back (in the original video) but in reality it went up and forward out frame and came down in the pit.

Sorry to destroy anyone's belief that it never came down - lol - but the newly released video last year which was Remastered audio and video included a wide shot of the final toss about 6:09 in the video below and it goes down quickly into the pit.

Supposedly the guitar tech caught it and handed it to Oprah Winfrey who was in the first row.

Lmao at the top Youtube comment, but it answers the titular question:

I know this is just my opinion, and I'm aware that he had talent(Could play multiple instruments)... but, I don't think he had a great voice. None of his songs really pull at the heart strings.

The only way he can be overrated is if you can legitimately rate someone over him, because he is the GOAT. If he should be #2, then I guess he is overrated.

Musical genius, incredible songwriter and the greatest performer and guitarist of all time.

His guitar playing was good, but as far as singer/guitarist/songwriter, I'd take John Mayer over Prince all day.

When I was in high school everybody either loved a) Prince or b) The Rolling Stones (who were touring in Houston). Both of these artists were at the top of their game. I loved them both.

Pfft...purify myself there plenty every summer.

I live about 5 minutes from Paisley Park. I moved here in 2017 and up until then I just knew I liked a few Prince songs but that was about it.

Been to PP a couple times now when we have visitors in town. Much greater appreciation for him now. For reference I was born in 1979.

Took my kids to see Prince at the LA Forum moons ago... as part of his 2?... 3 week run at that venue. We had seats center and 50 feet away. I've taken my kids to 200+ concerts from the age of 4.

After the show one of my sons said it was the best show ever he'd been to. That from a kid who, at 19, signed a $1,000,000+ major label record contract.

That was until we hit Water's Us and Them show at Staples. I believe to this day that show remains his fave.

Price wasn't over-rated.

Just want to congratulate you on your parent of the century award, that is awesome!

I've been to thousands of shows, and saw Prince 2x and both are in my top 10. Overrated? NOPE.

Well let's rate him. What are we rating and where does he rate?

Voice
Instruments
Entertaining
Overall

I say he can chart highly on all those those lists and would like to think that there probably no other artists that do the same.

I personally am not a big Prince fan, at all. However, I appreciate his showmanship and ability when watching that half time show.

If I had to just drive for 4 hours and listen to the discography of a band who has played a half time show, Prince would be way down on that list.
