I think he is/was literally sick. It sounds like they had a bigger role planned for him, but this was all he was able to do this season, due to his condition.

If that's the case...and I have no reason to not believe you...that makes their dialogue that much more brutal with Larry going, "Why don't you just go ahead and die? When are you going to die?"
