I read the book last year since it was on some pandemic reading list and loved it.

The series wraps up next week and the show has been excellent. The pacing and music and rounding out the characters has been everything I want in a book adaptation.

Literally stayed up until 3:00AM this morning binging the first four episodes. This **** is crazy. It's so well-acted and so well-shot. Had to pause and rewind some of the shots because it was so gorgeous. Not going to lie, I almost stopped 15 minutes in because my appetite for post-apocalyptic pandemic content is pretty low these days, but I'm glad I didn't. Looking forward to getting caught up before the finale next week.

Ayo, man. Just started Ep. 7 and…is this about Kirsten revisiting her relationship with Jeevan and Frank???

Because I'm about to make the stiffest drink and light up the fattest blunt ever because I don't think I can handle this kind of trauma in one 46-minute sitting.

Glad I stuck with this series, the moment back at the house in ep 9 was incredible. Great music selections in this one too.

This show is everything Invasion could have been. Too bad HBO didn't pick it up before Apple.

Regarding music, for decades HBO shows have been killing it in the pairing of random songs with scenes. A Pretty in Pink callback? This can't be random. Is there some song/scene savant hidden in a bunker at HBO who does this?

Ok. Based on comments here, I binged Station Eleven over the weekend, and I really liked the show. I would have loved the show if it had not been for the two episodes following the Traveling Symphony, but I understand on why they those episodes are there, now that I have watched it all the way through, minus the last episode.

Every episode filmed during or just after the "flu" were fantastic, acting, cinematography, and yes the music was excellent. I felt very drawn in, and cared about each of the characters, and how they dealt with the apocalypse.

My advice when watching the show is to "endure" the two episodes dealing with the Traveling Symphony, because every other episode is fantastic. My main issue with the Traveling Symphony is that they would have never survived a post apocalyptic event. This group, other than Kirsten, would have been picked off, and killed, by other people for their possessions. I like Shakespeare too, but the items they had would mean much more to another group trying to survive in a brand new world.

Give the series a try, I think that most will enjoy it.

They don't explain this clearly in the series, but pre-pan the Traveling Symphony founders (Sarah, Gil, Dieter) served in a band/orchestra at a local military base. They were capable of defending themselves and others in the early post-pan years. You may recall that Sarah was drinking, playing music, and holding a large firearm the first time she and Kirsten met. They trained the new members they picked up. Almost every pre-pan in that group has killed. Kirsten is the only one who keeps track of each kill with tattoos.

You are right they did do a horrible job explaining that, as well as casting. I would not want any of those actors in my post apocalyptic group.

What the. I haven't read the book, but to me literally every part was perfectly cast and acted. They were all so good. The only person I knew/recognized was Gael Garcia Bernal and Mackenzie Davis and the rest were unfamiliar character actors from what I can tell and they all dominated.

I am talking specifically about the troop of actors in the Traveling Symphony. Not one looked as if they could survive in the new reality post pandemic.

Everyone else was cast very well, especially the girl that plays young Kirsten. She was fantastic.

The book also explains the kill ratio of the virus was so high that there was not much competition for resources since there were so few people left.

Didn't one scene where the background audio was one of the last news updates say it was a 1-in-1000 survival rate? Was that in line with what the book explained?

Regardless of how/why the society has ended up as it is, I am really enjoying this show more than anything in a long time.

Just got caught up after binging the last 3 days. I agree with the other poster that I much prefer the flashback scenes rather than present day. The actress that plays young Kirsten is incredible! Episode 7 is one of the best episodes of television that I have ever watched.

The show looks amazing based on the trailer. Is this show preachy in a political sense or does it single out Christians, of all the religions, to make them look bad/stupid? If not, I am all in. But sick of shows/movies that do this.

In my opinion, the show is not religious at all. It just shows different people living and reacting to a pandemic.

I assume you are reacting to the "prophet". In this show it does not have the traditional religious connotations.

I don't think I would even call it that woke.
Just a great script and very well acted.

This trailer does a better job on the look and feel of the show.

Ok I'm glad I read this post because I was this close to quitting it. I watched the airport episode last night and that kind of pulled me back in. What is the deal with the image or appearance of the spaceman from the book showing-up? It came to the woman in the hotel in Malaysia; was in the back of the bus when she was trying to get to the port; also saw its reflection in the apartment window when the plane was crashing in Chicago. what am I not getting here?

I noticed several moments in the show where Christianity was actually embraced. Since you asked this question, you may notice that the characters are pretty diverse.

This is probably my favorite limited series I've watched since Devs.
JayHowdy!
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You are correct there are signs of Christianity throughout the show and the characters even exchange gifts at Christmas, but traditional religion is not a perverted force being used by a character in the series.

As for the spaceman and his appearances. I knew that he was from the book and was visible to the characters that cared the most about the book. The two kids and Miranda the creator, but why? I didn't really know myself. So I looked it up. See below what the director says:

https://www.vulture.com/article/station-eleven-behind-the-scenes-pilot-sequences.html

Murai's visual template combined Somerville's picture of an intimate postapocalypse with Dr. Eleven's presence. He became the show's omniscient narrator. His perspective was realized through visuals alone without the assistance of a clunky voice-over. His omniscience is subtle, often subliminal, but it turns the many pieces of Station Eleven's narrative into spokes on a wheel. Even wordless, Dr. Eleven's presence as a narrator is a form of comforting promise: Someone is watching the characters. Someone cares about them even at the end of the world.

I guarantee if it was the norm for movies to bash anyone left of center or make Muslims or Jews look bad/stupid...people from those groups would not support those movies or shows and you would not call them out. Well, I can almost guarantee it. I am tired of supporting those types of shows (i.e. "Don't Look Up" for a recent example).

I just want to watch shows and movies that stay away from political preaching and bashing religious people. Not sure how that's f'n "weird" to any sane, rational adult.

Then watch, it or don't. I don't care. There is no bashing of the "right" or pushing the woke policies of the left.
Watch the series and give us your opinion.

I am very conservative personally, and have the same thoughts on the left using Hollywood and the Media to spread their propaganda. This show does not fall into that category. But this is an entrainment board, if you want to spout politics take it to F16.

If you watch the series, and would like to contribute your thoughts after the viewing, I would encourage that. But until then, take your show over to F16.

So we can only comment on shows/movies we have actually seen, no questions about a show or movie in advance? I am not "spouting politics", you'd know if I were...I was asking a simple question, and I appreciate the answer from you and 1-2 others. Crazy how my question riles people up. If the shoe were on the other foot, they wouldn't think it was so "weird".

One of the most fascinating things of the last 6 or so years has been watching the posters that might have been right or left leaning but didn't wrap everything in politics change into these snowflakes that get offended with everything and have come to view the other side as the "other".

I am not sure if it is due to the average age of posters increasing and the natural conservative shift that happens with age or if the echo chamber aspect of this site has worked to radicalized them.

The show didn't do much for me at the beginning, but I stuck with it and it grew on me. I really enjoyed the Kirsten/Jevan/Frank dynamic. I cared less for the extended characters like Arthur and Miranda, but it all came together in the end. It was really emotional when Jevan and Kirsten saw each other, pretty much a perfect scene to me. I was worried it was going to be a sliding doors situation where they didn't get to see each other. I also appreciated that it was a different take on the apocalypse than what is normally presented to us. I also enjoyed how there was little music, as it had disappeared from the world as well, and only quiet was left so the bits that show up matter. The show also relayed the importance of the tribe and how solitude can be a tool or a hinderance depending on the person. I'd give the show a solid B to B+.

This was the best thing on TV in years. For me probably since Watchmen. The Finale was brilliant. What an amazing and powerful story. The episode in Franks apt with the play was a close second. Just a brilliant show.

I try to avoid politically slanted shows and movies as well since they're one-sided the past few years. Tough to do sometimes. It is annoying when an otherwise apolitical show decides to toss a one-off political barb or woke grenade, but I don't avoid those due to one or two rogue comments.

Having said that - I'm 6 episodes in and haven't noticed an anti-XYZ agenda.

I think it is a very fare question for the ET board. TCTTS for example might agree with the jabs taken in a show but he's also an honest resource to say "yeah, if that bothers you avoid x movie".
