Finished it last night. I get the feeling I would have enjoyed it more had I read the book. It was beautiful and well acted, but the pacing was tedious at times and some of the character/arc development was too shallow. I'm sure that was intentional given the length of the series, but it left me wanting more.
Life's an endless party, not a punch card.

Made it through episode 4 last night. Thankfully, something actually happened. I will keep plowing onward, but, man, this one has been a slogfest so far. And, why can't they cast attractive ladies? It is on Skinemax ffs. Not saying I need Baywatch, but these are some plain jane vanilla women.

Yea, shocking that people cared a little less about their physical appearance after everyone they ever knew died and the modern world ground to a halt.

I'm curious as to which arc and character developments you felt were shallow?

It's definitely at its slowest for the first 2 episodes. Stock with it.

I'm a bigger fan of the present younger kiersten days…also, why did the sun never shine on Chicago? It always looked like the same foggy, frosty day…over and over

I like that it is non political…shocked actually! The anchor woman sayin (basically) eff it and was out of there made me chuckle

A scary reminder of how fragile we humans are…

Episode 7 now…not bad so far (not the same "OMG this is amazing" reviews as some, but it's different)

PS: OK episode 7 was brilliant…and sad and riveting.

From 7 through the finale was some riveting TV. I binged this show over 3 days and watched 7-10 last night.

I cried when Frank died. When she went back to his apt and his body was decomposed in his bed.

I never felt any connection to Sarah, reminded me too much of Alpha from walking dead.

When they had Tyler play Hamlet at the end… wow. Talk about full circle. Mind blowing.

I teared up a lot when Kirsten turns and sees Jeevan watching the symphony… and he turns and makes eye contact. That same embrace she gave him… moving.

I hadn't noticed that the slide in the lake earlier in the season was probably the same slide as the one at their cabin… just iced over.

I wonder if anyone has found this lake on the wheel ? Or is it all fictitious? I assume it's all still near chicago.

Or am I dumb and that's Lake Michigan?.

I thought episode 7 was the best until I watched episode 10. Both were phenomenal but I give the edge to 10

Very unique show that takes patience for some. But mostly worth it for the character development.

In Ep 2 when they are swimming, Alex asked Kirsten if she went over to the cabin....so yeah, it is the same one.

Went in knowing nothing about this show, the book, and hadn't peaked in on this thread. Just saw it had good reviews and thought I'd give it a shot.
I nearly gave up after episode 2-3 once I realized it wasn't what I was expecting from a post apocalyptic show but man, am I glad I stuck with it. What a great series!

Question that has been weighing on me...

By the end was Tyler "reformed"? He went from turning kids into suicide bombers but ends up walking away like everything was fine at the end. I know he played Hamlet but didn't think that was enough for a full forgive and forget.

Maybe I am reading too much into it or missed the obvious redemptive moment.

As much as I enjoyed the show, I had the same question. It just seemed like the suicide bomber thing was just completely forgotten after she spent time with that one kid

That was my major gripe. He had pre-teen suicide bombers on deck, but it got written off as mommy/daddy issues. Yes, it was well done and climaxed itself effectively through the final play, but still. Objectively speaking, we all cool with Tyler now?

NO.

While it's the weakest part of the episode, they kinda explain it. A bit. (I caught it the second time around)

This explains it a bit better and quicker:

Quote:

For the first several episodes, Tyler is a menacing figure who threatens the Traveling Symphony and seemingly sends child suicide bombers. When Kirsten tracks him down and is about to kill him, he claims that while he was injured from a stab wound (that Kirsten gave him), a child named Haley started to have ideas of her own and masterminded the bombing herself, telling the children "the mines erase the past."

Haley is the child in the finale that suddenly arrives at the airport with a bag full of landmines, which she call "beacons for The Prophet." She is ultimately convinced that the Prophecy isn't real when Kirsten shows her the graphic novel it came from. This apparently is enough to subvert whatever cataclysmic plan the children of the Undersea were intent on when they saw Tyler "light the signal" by blowing up the airport tower.

Link

I was left wondering what the hell Tyler was going to do with all those kids, but not everything needs to be wrapped up I guess. Something can be lost when every loose string is taken care of in the final episode.

If you find that you like Station Eleven... I recommend Justin Cronin's trilogy... The Passage, The Twelve, and The City of Mirrors.

Or just stop at the Passage, which is a classic. I don't think the other two measure up, although he does stick the ending pretty well IMO.

Agreed. One of the best books I've ever read. Sequels are meh. The Station Eleven book references The Passage in dialogue between characters.

Was thinking about the show today and something came to mind.

Miranda's eyes lit up when she learned what logistics were....and she apparently excelled at it. Getting something from point A to point B.

In her own way (using the graphic novel and her phone call to the pilot), she got Jeevan and Kirsten from point A (first real scene at the theater in Chicago) to point B (last scene in the woods at the end).

Every major decision Jeevan and Kirsten made (that I can think of) after they got to Frank's apartment was affected by Station Eleven.

- leaving a day late because of the play
- Jeevan meeting his future wife because she was distracted while reading (otherwise, she might have shot her)
- Jeevan going out to get the book and not coming back
- The book being what led to Clark allowing the play to proceed
- As mentioned above, the book apparently preventing a major attack on the airport by the undersea

If not for the phone call to the pilot, they probably wouldn't have reunited.

My main gripe is how quickly people can apparently memorize their lines of Shakespeare.

One question I have is how Tyler blew up the tower. How did he use his old console to trigger a bomb/fire? I know he probably set it up while he was sneaking around that first night back, but still...

He was also a good 600-1000 yards away when he did it. Maybe the airport wifi is still up and running with the solar panels and everything....but he'd be out of range.

Yeah. Very expressive eyes and eyebrows.

Has that strong square jaw. Teeth and mouth are a little different but yes, very similar.

And how in the heck were all those children (some very young) fed and taken care of? And I just don't see how some creepy dude with a ponytail could convince a 5 year old to leave their loved ones behind that quick. But whatever, was still a great show.

Ok, I gotta say it. This was just awful. Like, I am really pissed I didn't pull the plug. Yall kept saying how the last couple episodes were the best thing ever, so I hung on. Boy did that suck. I am not mad at yall. I am mad at myself, and the writers and directors. ****, that was bad. I only regret that I have just one thumbs down to give. And that I watched the whole thing.
