If Don't Look Up is Best Picture nomination worthy, then Idiocracy was the best film made in the past 30 years

Coda is definitely worth watching and cheering for.

This feels very condescending.

Totally understand folks not liking the slowness of Power of the Dog, it took me a couple sittings to get through the first time. But man, if you find yourself in the mood for one of those slow burn kind of movies, it is GREAT. Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the best characters in a long time.

They had no clue what they had on their hands with Bruno.

Also don't look up was pretty bad

Just noticed no Denis Villeneuve for Best Director.
How is that even possible?

I've watched some of the short/long documentaries and live shorts. Here's a quick run-down:

Docs:
Attica- extremely good, tells the story of the famous prison takeover in 1971. Horrible how it ended.
Flee- terrific, tells the story of one man and his family's refugee escape from Afghanistan; animated
Summer of Soul- fun, interesting, great music & culture examination from a lost series of concerts in 1969
all 3 are worthy of winning and should be nominated for best film over Don't Look Up

Short Docs:
Queen of Basketball - just ok for me, more like an ESPN short
Three Songs for Benazir- helpless family in Afghanistan, trying to improve their situation

Live Shorts:
The Dress- absolutely worthy, I'm still thinking about it days later
Long Goodbye- well done, but not at Dress' level

Argo won Best Picture and Affleck wasn't nominated either.

Sometimes these things just don't make sense.

I agree, it makes no sense that Argo was deemed the best movie of that year

Tick, Tick... Boom was a great movie, my choice for Best Picture over Dune from the list, and Andrew Garfield would hands-down be my choice for Best Actor of the movies I've seen from the list.

Nobody is my flat out favorite movie from the past year, have seen it 3 times so far and would watch it again tonight. But that kind of movie is not showing up in these nominations.

No Time To Die was really entertaining as well. Daniel Craig is probably my favorite Bond even over Connery because I like these gritty movies more than the previous Bond movie approaches.

Huge Dune fan having read the book and seen the original movie several times, they did a great job with the remake. Really interesting it only made it through the first part of the story, setting up several more movies to come.

Don't Look Up had some genuinely funny parts to it, but it was just too long. Was very surprised it made the nominations. I thought Meryl Streep as the President was really funny.

House of Gucci - Didn't make the list, but Jared Leto was really great. Overall, one I would not re-watch. It was okay.

Being the Ricardos - pretty good, but I was able to get up to go to the restroom without requiring the rest of the fam to hit the Pause button for me. Personally I thought Nicole Kidman did a great job as well as J.K. Simmons in supporting role.

Licorice Pizza - not a fan of this movie but I can say I made it through to the end somehow. No-Pause-button-required a couple of times in this one.

I do still plan to watch Belfast, West Side Story and CODA. Not sure about King Richard, we'll see.

This is a group that gave best picture to The Shape of Water, Green Book, The Artist, The Kings Speech.

I thought Green Book was fantastic. What's wrong with Green Book?

Whether it wins or not, Idiocracy is still one of the best films made in the past 30 years.

Hmmm... I loved Argo, Green Book and The King's Speech, but would have to see what other movies they were up against those particular years.

The King's Speech was up against The Social Network. KS is a good movie - I have nothing against it - but TSN is an all-timer and absolutely should have won that year. Twelve years later, there's a reason TSN is still a part of pop culture while almost no one talks about KS anymore.

Best Original Song
"Be Alive" from King Richard - Dixson and Beyonc Knowles-Carter
"Dos Oruguitas" from Encanto - Lin-Manuel Miranda
"Down to Joy" from Belfast - Van Morrison
"No Time to Die" from No Time to Die - Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell
"Somehow You Do" from Four Good Days - Diane Warren

Funny that the song they didn't submit is the number one song on Billboard.

Dos Oruguitas is an incredible song - I hope it wins. My kids love the song that we can't talk about.

The endless, unironic b*tching about the Hollywood "bubble," from one of the most notorious bubbles on the internet, will never not be hilarious to me.

Also, if Zelenskyy is indeed speaking during the telecast tonight, one would assume that ABC would be advertising the hell out of it ahead of time, in order to boost their abysmal Oscar ratings, rather than allowing would-be viewers to find out about it after the fact.

But whatever.

Either way, I think it's actually going to be a pretty entertainment ceremony, all things considered. Some big musical acts, Will Smith almost assuredly winning, Coda the underdog potentially winning it all, Dune sweeping the technical categories, The Godfather 50th anniversary celebration, etc. Legit looking forward to it.

I want to be excited for the awards. But the nominees make it difficult. I'm just a mainstream movie kind of guy.

I'm more interested in seeing the production of the show than most of the awards tonight. A year or two ago they had some cool videos/graphics to present the nominees. Probably will mute Amy Schumer if she annoys me as usual.

The cinematography clip they showed for MacBeth looked cool. Might have to check out part of it for a few scenes
