Personally I think Barbie is going to see a pretty considerable drop in the coming weeks, whereas Oppenheimer will have much stronger legs.

Glad to see how well it started overseas.

Hope both movies can clean up the next few weeks. Both have sold out screenings for the weekend, so I think next weekend will see minimal drops for both.

Very fascinated to see how both of these do over the weekdays.

Also, my screening of Oppenheimer has trailers for The Holdovers and the new Exorcist movie. Exorcist looked amazing from the trailer.

Hell of a weekend. Barbie just slightly below Friday's projections, and Oppenheimer slightly ahead.

Will be interesting to see if it can overtake Mario for the top spot of the year.

Went to a 7:30 showing of Barbie at the Alamo near downtown Dallas. Parking lot was full as was my showing. This will do more crazy numbers for Tuesday.

Same thing at the Alamo near DFW this evening. Went to dinner with the family, the parking lot was packed, and there were people in pink everywhere.

I knew this release date was gonna be a problem for MI. Most of July was wide open, they really should've released at least a week earlier.

Granted, nobody expected Indy to flop so hard.

Oppy with an insane -43% hold for a $47M second weekend.

For comparison, Inception and Dunkirk did 42M and 26M, respectively.

Dunkirk's $190M domestic total will be left in the dust soon. Inception's $292M is looking very doable.

Huge gamble by the studio on Barbie, it needed like 750 million to break even, and it's gonna do it.
Oppenheimer is tougher to pin down, estimates vary on production and marketing, but might need 5-600 million, and it may get there too - as an R rated period piece.

Pretty amazing, but for those of us who have been begging the studios to take a chance on new IP and not just jam one more superhero movie down our throats, there is a sense of vindication. The market is there for original well made films.

No way it needed 750 million to "break even"

Personally I'm excited for the possibility of Oppenheimer 2: Atomic Boogaloo.

Yeah, it's prodiction budget was around 150 mil. No way was 500+ spent on marketing. I'd guess 250-300 is break even...which is still a lot for a movie like this. Oppenheimer is likely similar.

It's the same story but from the perspectives of Lawrence and Frank

The studio only gets about 40 percent of the worldwide gross.
On Barbie they spent 150 million on marketing in addition to the production budget, so close to 300 million all in. 300 divided by .4 is 750.
It was a big big gamble.

On oppenenheimer, the numbers vary between 100-180 million on budget, and 65 to 100 million on marketing. If you split the difference there, that's 220 million, divided by .4 is 550.
