Had to miss the update that Beetlejuice 2 surpassed Home Alone as the #2 comedy of all time (domestic) a few days ago as staff rewarded me with a nice break for being hilarious.

Over the weekend, Venom 3 banked $51m. This was a significant drop from the original ($80m in early October 2018) and the 2021 sequel ($90m).

The original was massive force overseas, scoring $213m, $642 international, for a worldwide slaying of $856m. It was just outside the top 10 domestic in a massive year that featured 3 movie make more than $600m.

The sequel made $213m domestic, $293m international, and $506m total, which was pretty strong the first year back to movies after COVID. It finished third domestically behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang Chi, ahead of Marvel meh movies Black Widow and Eternals.

_______________________________________

Smile 2 was #2 with $9.5 on the weekend, followed by the still-going-strong Wild Robot, at $6.8m, up to $111m in an animation world largely dominated by Disney / Pixar / Minions.

_________________________________________

Joker bled 1,614 theaters off its total and is no win just 1,243. It's at $57.8m domestic after the first one made $335m in 2019.

__________________________________________

Deadpool & Wolverine is down to just 300 theaters as it approaches its Disney+ debut. Still made $133,000 though, and is now less than $400,000 away from hitting $700m international. It won't quite catch Joker for #1 R rated International movie ever ($728m), but is the #1 Global R movie ever ($1.336 bn).

Beetlejuice 2 is likely to have a big uptick Thursday-Sunday for Halloween movie goers and is a closing in on $300m, really remarkable stuff. Again, not adjusted for inflation. I thought I was going to write its Michael Keaton's top box office draw ever, but that's not true. He was the bad guy in Spiderman: Homecoming which made $334m, and has been in Toy Story 3 ($415m) and Minions ($336m),

Keaton is having the kind of late-career box office suggest paralleling the likes of Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and I'm sure there are several others I'm forgetting- Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, maybe?

Before 2006, he had been in two movies that made more than $100m - Batman ($251m) and Batman returns ($162m). As recently as 2005 he was the co-star of Lindsey Lohan in "Herbie: Fully Loaded". He was 54 years old at the time, so not looking great.

Then he added Cars in 2006 as a voice actor ($244m), getting into that glorious Disney stable.

In 2010 he's in Toy Story 3 as Ken ($415m) and The Other Guys ($119m)

In 2014 he's in the magnificent Birdman and is suddenly way way back in the limelight, despite being 63 years old at the time.

In 2015, he has some fun as one of the bad guy voices in Minions that makes $336m.
In 2017 he's in the first new Spider-man movie and just fantastic, that makes $334m.
In 2019, he's in Dumbo, which mostly sucked, but still made $114m
We're going to forget the weird Morbius cameo.
In 2023, he's in the massively flawed Flash, but he's Batman again, and it makes $108m despite the movie having Ezra Miller in it.
In 2024, Beetlejuice 2 comes out and crushes it - up to $289m. Homeboy is SEVENTY THREE YEARS OLD with 8 movies that have made $100m+ since he turned 56 in 2006.

Over the weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine edged up one final spot in Global Box Office to #18 all-time at $1.337bn, passing Black Panther. In doing so, it became the 44th movie to reach $700m or more internationally. The only other American R rated film to do so was 2019's Joker at $728m.

With Gladiator 2, Wicked, and the Lion King prequel still on tap along with many more movies in the next two months, 2024 will be the best year in tickets sold since 2019 domestically.

2024 is at 767,378,024 tickets sold for a total box office of $8.272bn through the first week of November.
2023 finished at 830,812,470 tickets sold for a total box office of $8.956bn.

In 2019, 1.225bn tickets were sold for a total box of $11.224bn, adjusted for inflation is $13.209bn.

The Numbers data goes back to 1995. The #1 year in ticket sales and inflation adjusted revenue in that time frame is 2002, when 1.575bn tickets were sold. That was the year of LOTR 2, Harry Potter 2, the first Maguire Spider-Man, Attack of the Clones, Men in Black 2, the first Ice Age, Die Another Day, Signs, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Minority Report, etc.

I would be interested in others' opinions of the fact that maybe that's the year that the most tickets were sold in this data set because after that it became a lot more easy to acquire movies illegally online.
I had Kazaa back in the day, it came out in 2001, and definitely watched a few movie I never saw in the theater on it. Napster's final release was in September of 2002.

Venom 3 becomes the 17th movie of the year to reach $100m. It still blows my mind that The Fall Guy didn't make it there.

24 movies made it to $100m in 2023
18 in 2022
13 in 2021

Deadpool & Wolverine bows after 105 days at the box office on November 7, finishing at
$636,745,585 domestic
$701,045,064 international
$1,337,791,922 global

Domestic
12th all-time domestic
5th all-time for super hero movies
1st all-time for R-rated movies

The last three years have brought six new movies to the top 20 domestic
#5 Maverick $718m
#7 Avatar 2 $684m
#11 Inside Out 2 $652m
#12 Deadpool & Wolverine $636.7m
#13 Barbie $636.2m
#17 The Super Mario Bros. Movie

When Avengers bowed in 2012, it was #3 all-time at $623m, trailing only Avatar and Titanic. Now it's 14th.
When Rogue One wrapped up in 2016, it was 7th at $533m. Now it's 20th.

Boy, you got me, well done. Well since you want to continue discussing it, the below tweet on the topic has 4.2 million views. I would hope you understand that a story can be shared by many different outlets. I was trying to find a summary that showed both the original artwork and current story in some visual manner. The topic is out there for many. It won't effect everyone's decision, but it will impact some.

As I said, I expect Wicked to do very well. It is a great story as evidenced by its immense Broadway run. But why chop 5-10% off your audience with a childish rant by one of the stars?

Bottom line is don't appear ungrateful to those who came before you and those whose material you are doing a remake of.

The "white girl" is mostly obscured also though.

In fact way more of the witch is visible.

Joker 2 leaves the box office as one of the most spectacular sequel failures of all time.

$44.556m on its opening weekend of October 4

Leave theaters on November 7 at $58.259m.

Opened in 4,102 theaters.
Dropped to 2,857 on its 15th day of release
Then to 1,243 theaters on Day 22
Then to 324 on Day 29

#400 on the all-time sequels domestic box office list. Trailing such luminaries as:

The Croods: A New Age (#398), My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (#393), and yes, even Superman III (#391).

The second-worst wide-release film for Todd Phillips as a director, trailing only 2016's War Dogs (Miles Teller / Jonah Hill) that made $43 million. That movie had a budget of $50 million. Joker 2's budget was somehow $190 million.
