I'm certainly not a Batman expert, so I'll give way to some of you more comic book experts if I'm way off here, but I'm seeing several points in that tweet which lend themselves to Court of Owls.

Yeah, no official word yet but the Court of Owls has been heavily rumored for this movie for a while now. There was also the below shot from The Penguin last year that used blatant OWL shapes along the walls of a COURT room, which, IMO, all but sealed the deal. Given that Oz is now in politics, and considering Bruce's aristocratic roots, it would make a ton of sense...

The Court of Owls storyline is very much a Bruce Wayne story as opposed to a Batman story.

Has to be Court of Owls if it's never been done in a movie.

Yes and no. I think the Court of Owls will likely play a significant role and be revealed as pulling the strings, but Batman still needs a singular, physical villain to go up against. The two most prominent rumors in that regard have been Clayface and Hush, but seeing as Clayface is now getting his own DCU movie, that basically leaves either Hush or some other villain we haven't seen yet in live action. Personally, I was hoping for a more grounded take on Mr. Freeze, but Reeves' latest comments seem to rule him out.

But we already have a perfect depiction of Mr. Freeze in film.

I only know of the court of owls storyline from what i have gleaned from wikipedia a few years ago, but that sounds very intriguing.

Clayface is a dud and would be a the "big stupid monster" trope all over again despite the writers trying to give him some super interesting background that would inevitably fall flat and be completely uninteresting.

Disagree bigly on Clayface... Batman: The Animated Series made him and Mr. Freeze two of the best and most tragic villains in Batman's gallery.

Now, the issue is how do you approach him since his traditional take is very cartoonish monster, which just wouldn't really seem to work in this universe. But something like a master of disguise that was horribly disfigured, or has some elements of body horror could be really well done.

And like most Batman fans, I'm a huge fan of the Court of Owls and excited to finally see them on screen. But I'm tempering expectations... The Court of Owls is one of the best Batman stories ever. And it's an awesome concept... for comics. Or even that god awful Gotham Knights video game to which they were central to the story... but they're not a super villain. It's a shadow organization. Really it's just the Gotham Illuminati, a bunch of rich people pulling strings behind the scenes... I just don't know if it's going to translate to screen the way fans of them are expecting.

You'd need to have a leader as the "Big Bad" - so will that be an actual super villain? Are they going to have the stuff like the maze and Talons? Because I really doubt it... I dunno, I just think it's going to be so hyped by Batman fans, and it's going to end up just being kind of ancillary stuff like the mob and Carmine Falcone.

Man, would be an accomplishment to exceed the previous film...

Hope everyone has watched or plans to watch it this weekend. My boys and I did so this past weekend to make sure we got it in by Halloween.

Happy Batman Day.

I felt The Killer was beautifully shot, especially that fight scene that was so visceral I felt like I was in the room. So, not too terrible news if this change is true.

Exactly. Considering everyone (myself included) said The Batman was basically Batman by way of David Fincher, now having Fincher's literal cinematographer is about as good of a replacement as we possibly could have hoped for.

Seeing as Matt Reeves is quickly expanding The Batman into its own cinematic bat-verse, across both film and TV, I figured it best to have a single thread as a catch-all going forward, instead of news getting lost in the old Batman or DC

As for the projects themselves, Reeves (writer/director of The Batman) is highly involved with/producing each one, overseeing the entire universe, hiring many of the writers/showrunners/directors himself, is the creative vision, etc. Here's the current slate...

THE PENGUIN

- A TV series that begins filming early 2023 for a late 2023 release on HBO Max.

- "Expands upon the world filmmaker Matt Reeves created for Warner Bros Pictures' global blockbuster The Batman and centers on the character played by Colin Farrell in the film." - Warner Bros. Press Release

- Will take place in the immediate aftermath of The Batman, in the wake of the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and will revolve around the Penguin's rise to power in Gotham's criminal underworld.

- Cristin Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone (and half-sister to Selina Kyle/Catwoman), squaring off against the Penguin for control of Gotham.

ARKHAM ASYLUM

- A second HBO Max series that only recently hired a showrunner, so I wouldn't expect this one to be filming until late 2023/early 2024, for a 2024 release.

- "The Arkham Asylum show does not have an official logline at this time, but Reeves previously described it as 'like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.'" - Variety

THE BATMAN SEQUEL

- Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin are currently writing the sequel.

- Filming likely won't begin until early 2024. And seeing as Warner Bros. is releasing Joker: Folie a Deux (The Joker sequel) on October 4, 2024, and would never release two Batman-related theatrical features in the second half of 2024, we're almost assuredly not going to see The Batman sequel until 2025. My guess would be summer 2025, spring at the earliest, and that it will chronologically follow both the The Penguin and Arkham Asylum series.

- No details are known about the plot.

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS

"[Reeves] is meeting with writers and directors to build out movies - yes movies, not just series - focused on Batman rogue's gallery, both established and more obscure, with characters ranging from the Scarecrow to Clayface to Professor Pyg. All those projects are in the very early stages of gestation. - The Hollywood Reporter

All these spinoffs look lame.

That post is three years old. A lot has changed. The Penguin was incredibly well received, the Arkham Asylum show was scrapped, and there hasn't been a peep about the Scarecrow or Professor Pig movies since.

So we're breaking even on the cinematographers, and potentially upgrading on the female leads. This movie's shaping up nicely indeed.

Just read up on her. She basically sounds like the female Batman, except out for blood and way more vengeful, after witnessing the murder of her father, who was in the mob. If this is indeed who Johansson is playing, the thematic parallels would make a lot of sense, and the whole mob thing would of course jibe with the first movie and The Penguin series. I can't see Johansson playing *just* the love interest, but the love interest who becomes so much more would make a lot of sense, effectively making her the primary villain of the movie and treading completely new franchise ground in the process. Throw in the Court of Owls and/or a secondary/minor villain and I can totally start to see the broad strokes of the movie.

She would be the perfect pick to play Andrea Beaumont/Phantasm. It's one of those castings that just makes too much sense.

Agreed. But Part II takes place only a month or so at most after the first movie, the end which she left town. It probably wouldn't make much sense to have her come back so soon.
