Ended up grabbing a two day pair in Dallas.

My wife is spending $Texas on Taylor Swift tickets, so I had some leeway on pricing. Stayed out of the pit though on account of I'm an old
The pit is a very calm, and crowd (moshing not even allowed) and not that many people are in there.

G/A up near the stage is where you stay away from if you're old!

Recent interview with zakk and he was explaining how his rig is totally different to play these Pantera songs.. no reverbs and delays, needs a noise gate with so many staccato riffs.

Dime and Zakk are very pinch harmonic heavy, so they are similar in that regard.

Zakk will nail this, no doubt.

I bet Phil is going through vocal training/coaching in prep for this. He wants to do it justice. He has sounded pretty good in recent years with his Phil/Illegals doing pantera stuff.

Rex is Rex. Charlie is perfectly capable.

Here's a leaked video of Pantera soundcheck of their show tonight. Sounds pretty damn good to me. Zakk doesn't quite have the Dime tone and can definitely tell during the solo. The Zakk style is still present (as expected) and still doing the song justice. But from the small clip, everything sounds badass

Wow - that actually sounds really damn good. Biggest takeaway for me as how good Phil sounds.

Saw that Mammoth WVH is opening on the 1st night. Saw them open for GnR. They are really good. If you haven't given their album a listen, do so.

The riffs are decent but the vocals are just terrible. I won't listen to anything after ...and justice... though so there was basically zero chance I would get down with this.
When has Metallica ever had great vocals? "Never" is the correct answer. That's not what they, or any thrash band I've ever heard, are about. This new song is above average compared to their whole body of work, but not one of their best.

Ok they aren't great for what I would want to hear in a thrash song. They are super cheesy.

Not reading all you outcast losers slap fight each other.

That song sucks. Not like sucks, sucks, but it sucks. It sounds like something fox studio paid them to make for some weak adrenaline movie. Been however long, and this is the most creative you can come up with?? Weak.

I liked it. They sounded more thrash and dare I say it.... like Megadeath.

It's their NWOBHM tribute on the record. Pure Motorhead/Diamond Head which are the two "heads" they put together when creating Metallica's sound. James likes it, said it was super easy and fun to play...basically wrote itself. Nothing too deep, just a ripper that will probably sound great live.

I anticipate much more complexity and depth for the rest of the record based on remaining run time.

How do you know it's their most creative? They have 11 more songs on the album, perhaps it's the least creative.

Love Metallica and the music they put out, this song included . Can put on any of their albums and enjoy it start to finish. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

This is straight NWOBHM riffing and song structure. If you're familiar with it, it's easy to hear.

Has the same feel as this, which Metallica covered 30 years ago.

Not unless it's a hidden cut. Track listing for the new album is:

"72 Seasons"
"Shadows Follow"
"Screaming Suicide"
"Sleepwalk My Life Away"
"You Must Burn!"
"Lux Aeterna"
"Crown of Barbed Wire"
"Chasing Light"
"If Darkness Had a Son"
"Too Far Gone?"
"Room of Mirrors"
"Inamorata"

James is still looking for a good rhyme to go with "Now you're unforgiven--four!"

How is it that these old 60 year old dudes seem to be more creative and innovative than any other band out there?

Ripping off tool with that name

I looked this up because I've always been curious about the use of the AE in that song. Turns out it is actually kind of a style choice as the joined AE is a ligature for a long e sound that has been simplified over time to just using e, but some use it to show that something is old or old fashioned. The use here actually makes some sense, though Tool's would seem like a bit of a mispronunciation (we'll ignore the whole "i" instead of an "e" thing).

The more you know.

If so, it would probably involve saying "for" instead of four, like they did "too" instead of two.

Both songs are underwhelming. I think the sponge is officially dry of new creative juices.

I think that's a common struggle with an artist/band who has such great 'classic era' material. People compare it to that and expect it to live up to it. It ain't gonna happen.

No other artist has had a massively and critically successful run at some point in their career, and then again 30 years later.

Take all that past out of the equation, and listen to it with 'today's ears'. It certainly isn't bad, and is better than a lot of stuff that is current.
