Man that movie sucked. Incredible visuals, but horrible line reading/dialogue. I didn't care for the villain at all.

Now I'm disappointed that the fake Na'vi operators didn't have beards, wear ball caps & dip snuff.

The whale legitimately has one of the best character arcs in the movie.

Just watched it and this sums it up. The plot and writing were terrible and it may have been even preachier than the first one. The whale serum scene (launch a huge, elaborate hunting expedition to murder a massive, hyper intelligent whale just to extract about a quart of space ambergris) was peak James Cameron.

Effin' gorgeous, though, especially in 3D. Like this first, it was worth a viewing just for the visuals. It feels like you're touring another planet.

EDIT: oh and it should have been a 1h45m movie tops. 3h15m was... well, no director besides James Cameron and Ridley Scott could get away with stretching that junk script past 3h. It was exhausting. Like Lord of the Rings without the plot.

So I watched this in Dolby 3D yesterday and the sound and visuals are obviously fantastic in that format. The sound and rumbling from the seats adds a whole other layer to the action, and the image quality is second to none.

I will say that after adjusting to the HFR, it looks great, but eventually the problem becomes the switching back and forth between 24 fps and the HFR makes the regular frame rate look a bit choppy. I had heard that compliant before and figured it was a projector problem or someone who had specific issue with their eyes adjusting, but sure enough, I noticed it too. It was only bad when it would switch back and forth within the same action scene, which happened more than you'd think.

But it's not enough to ruin the experience. Still a fantastic way to watch the movie and I'd recommend it for those who have the option. By far the best image quality you will ever get.

My only wish is that they commit to full HFR for the entire movie in the sequels. (And offer the two choices for those who'd rather not watch HFR, I suppose.)

Might be a slight spoiler for the sequels, but I think it's a cool tidbit of what's to come.

If I had to guess:

3 - Lo'ak
4 - Spider
5 - Kiri

Saw it and felt similar to how I felt leaving the last one. Not bad... not great. It was entertaining enough. 7/10.

However, I really want to know where the Company hires their employees. Do they just source psycopaths? Or are we to assume Cameron thinks all people or all whities are psycopaths? Ever single one of these characters, aside from scientists, are just happy about being brutal towards other sentient beings.

Also, found it funny how we got rid of this all important mineral hiding under the God tree for the brain juices of their sentient whales. I guess they no longer need the unobtanium? All of that was kind of silly and just heavy handed plot stuff.

I'm not jazzed about having the exact same villain in yet another movie, either.

File this one under obvious, but still exciting to hear.

Finally got around to seeing it today. Pretty much what I expected: gorgeous visuals with questionable writing. The framerate did bother me in a few scenes, looked like the action was sped up at times like an old silent film. Aesthetically, reminded me a ton of Subnautica (incredible game, btw).

The first one was nominated as well, and this was an improvement on that movie by general consensus.

Don't see why anyone would be surprised.

However, in some ways I feel James Cameron was even more deserving for Best Director than the movie itself, so I'm bummed he didn't get that.

My kids really liked it but I hope mom takes them to Avatar 3 because of the reasons already mentioned multiple times on this thread. Just way too long. .. and corny.

We finally got to the theater to watch this today. From what I read the best "quality" would be Dolby 3D based on the cameras used. If we'd pulled the trigger a week or 2 ago we could have gone to Stonebriar in Frisco, but they've stopped showing in D3D.

We went to Village on the Parkway in Addison since it was still available in D3D. Pretty nice to reserve seats a few days ago and at the time only 2 seats in the theater were taken, so I got first row of the 2nd/upper level, dead center.

Visually this was the craziest thing I've watched since I first saw The Matrix in a theater. Wow. The soap opera effect was sometimes a little annoying, but overall it didn't matter. What a crazy nuts insance visual experience.

He could have cut an hour from the movie, still moved the plot where it needed to be, and still show all the badassery. There is still some wildly cheesy dialogue, but it wasn't as much of the movie as the first. I know he said something along those lines that I saw in a video I found via this board - the first movie was by-design wildly dumbed down in-order to set the narrative to a broader audience for long-term impact.

Will I watch it again start to finish? Maybe if I eventually get a projector that will do it justice, or TV whenever 100" finally become reasonablly priced. I'm 100% positive my wife will never watch more than 30 minutes of it at a time again. Not that she didn't like it, but it definitely isn't in her wheelhouse. She likes the visual whiz-bang, but not nearly as much as I do and definitely not enough to sit for 3 hours again. Even when we finally upgrade the home theater I don't know if I could sit through 3 hours again. Mother F that movie was unnecessarily long.

I have the original on blu-ray and when we first setup the dedicated media room at the last house it was what we used to show off the 3D. I'm still rocking that Epson 1080P projector, which sadly only has about 1900 hours on the bulb. I keep hoping it'll just quit so my wife will agree to replacing it.
Staff - take out the trash.

One of the channels I always enjoy watching. This is a great breakdown of this hand scene from WetaFX, along with how they did other shots.
