I also don't think it's a good movie, but I'm sure the main reason for that is that I didn't see it until I was an adult.

There is probably a 10 to 15 year period from late 90s to 2010 full of movies targeted at kids/teens of which I have zero knowledge. Other than Harry Potter, of course.

My son turns 8 in March and we're probably gonna start opening up the library of movies he can watch.

Same-ish. I had just graduated high school when The Goonies came out. It was an entertaining movie, but was definitely not aimed at my age group. And I have let my kids watch it.

This is not a classic kids movie. Muppet Treasure Island on the other hand is and should replace the muppet movie on your list.
