Would love that. Especially if Liz's husband tags along in retirement, and is just hanging around with that goofy grin on his face. I'm presuming it'd be a restaurant or food truck or something.

Idk. That's just what my BF has predicted will happen.

I am being silly. I thought that was pretty obvious. She is bored needs a hobby or someone to nurture while her soon to be retired husband is going to be home more. He loves cooking. The show made a pretty obvious effort to highlight both.

Haha! I'm probably a little slow. I admit l'll start watching and get so caught up in what's happening in one episode that I don't/won't think ahead. Foreshadowing is completely lost on me.

Save for Harrison Ford's surely astronomical salary, there is no other reason this show can't be the new, modern-day, streaming "sitcom" hit that airs 20 episodes a season, just like the good ol' days. Because it's so damn good, and I'm not at all ready to say goodbye next week, for a whole year. I laughed multiple times this episode, then legit teared up at Paul's "big gesture" in the second-to-last scene, and I can't remember the last show that managed to run the emotional spectrum like that, this effectively.

Any show that has an Eddie Vedder song is top notch.

I thought episode 8 was the finale. I thought it was an odd way to end the season but whatever. I didnt realize it was because I got caught up to the weekly releases. Horray for having 2 more to watch

Can't wait for next season!

I felt like it was a crossover episode with Bad Sisters!

Which, by they way, is a good watch, if you're looking for something now that this has ended.

Finished and I'm sad it's over.

I enjoyed this show a lot. It's tough to put my finger on it. I know the show had some of the same players as Ted Lasso, but it had a different vibe. Yet, it was still refreshing the same way Ted Lasso was when it first came out. Just something different and new.

I absolutely loved Paul (Harrison Ford). He was probably my favorite character. Liz annoyed me at first but I eventually got on board.

Criticism: Jason Segal's character was a little too goofy for me at times and I didn't like how often the show perpetuated the image that dad's are just hapless, know-nothing, rubes that can't relate to their children. Between Paul's relationship with his estranged daughter and Jimmy navigating the complexities of raising a teenage girl alone, we got a double dose of dad ****ing up left and right. I would have valued seeing/celebrating a little more of when Paul and/or Jimmy came through for their kids.

I'm looking forward to Season 2.

In no way did I see this as a show that "perpetuated the image that dad's are just hapless, know-nothing rubes that can't relate to their children." It was the story of *one* broken man who lost his wife and then had a hell of a time time connecting with his daughter in the wake of that tragedy, and *one* broken man who was diagnosed with a life-altering disease and then had a hell of a time connecting with his daughter in the wake of that tragedy. Like, that was the entire point of the show. And then... in the end... both men overcame the horrible cards they had been dealt and finally connected with their respective daughters. Had they "come through for their kids" any earlier there would be no overarching drama, and their character arcs - and thus the season - would have been completed much earlier. That, and it's a show specifically about all the screwed up ways people deal with grief.

I agree and I'll add that Paul helped Jimmy relate to his daughter and Jimmy equally provided Paul advice on dealing with his. When they weren't so close to the situation I think they could take a step back and help one another out.

I've really enjoyed this show. It's a refreshingly new theme and idea. The ending was definitely a shock value. Harrison Ford seems to be having fun with this role (although it makes me feel old to see him so old).

My question really has to do with an aspect of the streaming shows that kind of bothers me (warning: prude alert).

Why does there have to be such a barrage of swearing? Does Hollywood talk that way in everyday life?

I have lived in Los Angeles for over 30 years. I live in an area along the coast that is populated by the socio-economic class of people like they portray in Shrinking (doctors, lawyers, professionals, etc.). In school, work, social events I have been to over the decades, I do not hear the level of profanity that is routinely portrayed in these series.

Is it just to make it more edgy or artsy?

Funny, the swearing doesn't really bother me (except for sometimes when the daughter does it). Probably because my BF is from the Bronx and worked offshore and cusses like a sailor. He's def a bad influence on my vocabulary.

But I totally could have done without the Down Under scene in the last episode.

We tried to watch an episode of Ted Lasso because I'd heard such good things. I fell asleep. My BF finished it but has no desire to watch any more episodes. We didn't get it.

Also, as far as the Jimmy character goes, I didn't mind his goofiness. But I had a hard time reconciling his drug use in the first episode or two with the rest of his character arc. I totally get the alcohol angle. But hard drugs? I just couldn't see that (for all the same reasons the poster above doesn't get the swearing).

It doesn't bother me at all, but i have noticed that in shows where it's allowed, they go overboard.

It stars out slowly, but make sure you watch with subtitles. The joke come quick. I'd say see if you cant get past the first episode which is just introducing everything.

Yeah, I guess that's my biggest beef with it. It loses its punch when it's in every other sentence.

Haha, I get that! Funnily enough, I was IN the Navy and the sailors didn't swear as much around me as they do on these shows.

I think we counted 70 something F bombs and 99 curse words total on the season 4 premier.

Funny you say watch with subtitles. That was part of my issue - I couldn't understand what they were saying!

I raw dogging line was hilarious. I enjoyed the season. It will be interesting to see where season 2 goes since the main plot of season 1 was him recovering from losing his wife.

I was a huge fan of this show, they did a really good job with it. Did anyone else feel like they wrote Sean's character/plot with another actor in mind? There were multiple lines about him being "beautiful" and I really didn't think the actor fit the bill there.

Want to thank this board for pointing me towards this show. It was fantastic. My wife and I finished last night and it was such a good season. Can't wait to see where they go with it. Every character was entertaining and fun. Some of the lines were absolutely hilarious.

Harrison Ford was just fantastic in this. This role fit him perfectly. Liz really grew on me and they did a good job growing her character. Jason Segel kind of played his role he always plays but did really good. And Jefferson D'Arcy was just a perfect *chef's kiss* in every scene.

I only want one more season. I don't want this show to go on and on. Don't mind a bit more.

  • Seems like they changed Jessica Williams' Gabby a bit from the pilot. Originally, she seemed to be an airy, California flaky type. Seems like she gets further away from that with each episode.

I was wrong about Jessica Williams' character. She didn't change over the season, it just took me a few episodes to get into the rhythm Gabby. That said, she became my favorite character on the show. She was so fresh and funny with absolutely biting retorts and brutal honesty.

I think I find her so refreshing because I've never seen an African-American female character like her before. Most of the time, black female roles seem to fall into obvious tropes: 1) sassy young female, 2) demanding or embittered wife or 3) long-suffering but wise older woman. The closest I can think of to Gabby is Regina King as Cuba Gooding's wife in Jerry Maguire.
