It's cheating, but a buddy and I used to take turns seeing how high we could get one team to score on NFL Blitz in Dudley's. The "loser" would purposely throw an interception if they could, but worst case, turn the ball over on downs by running directly out of bounds with their QB on every play. Then the "winner" would throw a pass while the "loser" would pull all of their defenders away by changing which ones they control until the "winner" scored a TD. We would use the cheat codes to make our guys run faster, too. I honestly can't remember the highest score we ever achieved, but it was ridiculous.

Yes, we were bored with playing for real.

Galaga

I was in an arcade in Korea when I was a boy and a local Korean kid showed me how to make all the attackers stop shooting at me for the entirety of the game. We could play until we felt like stopping.

Kill everything on the screen in the first wave except for the last two bees on the far left of the screen. Go bunker down in the far right of the screen but watch out because a bullet or bee will periodically come from the right screen. Just wait them out for 15 to 20 minutes or so. Eventually you will notice they have stopped shooting at you. They won't shoot again for the rest of the game.

Sick day victories as a kid:
Beat TMNT the Arcade Game
Beat Sonic 2
Beat Mario 3

Beat Ocarina of Time while "working" at the West Campus Media Center.

Nothing huge, but good memories. Quality thread.

I beat Emerald Weapon on FF7 as a kid without a guide. That was pretty cool.

Most of my achievements are either time spent on a game, or related to Guitar Hero or games of that ilk. I could get 5 gold stars (so like 98%) on Ride the Lightning on Expert. Stuff like that.

Clearing this with one turtle, yes. Very tough.

Here's the dirty secret. You didn't have to beat it with one turtle. Once one started to get low health in the seaweed crap, switch to another one. It's an immediate swap, so your health goes right back up. As long as you had a couple turtles with close to full health, this level is a piece of cake. The rest of the game is much harder.

My top tier would either be:
- Completing all songs on expert in Guitar Hero 2
- Finishing all of the Halo games on Legendary
- Beating Nightmare King Grimm in Hollow Knight (didn't have the patience for Path of Pain, and the last Pantheon kicked my butt)

Getting a KO against Tyson. I was only able to do it once, but get the TKO fairly consistently. I actually had more problems with Mr. Sandman for some reason.

Somehow beat Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania on NES. Got to the Technodrome TMNT.

I am pretty terrible at everything else now.

Found all 96 levels in Super Mario World on SNES.

That's about it. I went super low on Golden Tee a few times to get on a leaderboard, but was drunk and have no idea what the score was. Never was great at any particular game. The kids still have me help them sometimes on games like Mario Odyssey because I have some retained skills.

And I can thump them all at chess.

played it enough to clear it with one turtle hardly taking any damage….I grew up with an NES and was the only kid on my street without a SNES so I played this sucker a lot….

Never enough to fully beat it though….could never figure out the town where you drive the turtle van around…

I found out that one of my friends beat Hollow Knight on Steel Soul mode (if you die, you have to start over from the beginning of the game) on his second try, which is impressive.

Beat the secret boss in Octopath Traveler 2 last night. Was orders of magnitude harder than anything in the first or second game.

After I won, I did some Google searching to see what other strategies people came up with. There's some really interesting and creative tactics I never would have thought of. This series has really impressed me with how many options you have for building your team.

I figured out in Madden '95 that if you lined up Darrell Green from the Redskins at the line of scrimmage when the other team was punting, he'd either block it every time or tackle the punter before he could even kick it. He could also sack just about any QB on a CB blitz. I had a 16-game season where Darrell Greene had 107 sacks and 29 blocked punts.

If someone here has managed to beat Ori and the Blind Forest on one life difficulty, that would be really impressive, considering the fact that there's instant death obstacles.

I don't have that many that I can think of besides beating my older brother once in Goldeneye when he used Oddjob.

I also once got 17 wins in Champions League on FIFA Ultimate Team back in 2020. Not that crazy but I was super proud of myself.

The only other one I can think of is also on Ultimate Team as I was playing Champions league and was down 4-2 in the 87' and ended up winning 5-4 after only 4 minutes of stoppage time. I was so pumped up knowing that the other guy had to be so mad.

I also found the "secret level" my friend had told me about in Super Mario 64. You know the one where you go up 34 steps in the endless stairway leading to the final battle with Bowser, back down another 16 steps, press the Z and B buttons at the same time and the door opens up to your right?

Just kidding, that secret level didn't exist and I wasted hours of my life until I realized my friend had made up the entire thing.

I remember when Contra 3 came out on SNES, rented it, nearly beat it on my second try. Final boss took some work. (First try was learning controls, the nuke button was a great touch).

I picked it back up recently and couldnt get out of the first stage. I was so dialed in back then. It was like art in motion: avoiding hits, getting kills, anticipating NPC patterns.

I managed to beat the Legend of Zelda on my NES without dying. I had brought it to my dorm room and got bored one Saturday so I started to play it. I didn't mean to spend most of the day on it. I don't remember when I decided to try and beat it without dying, I just knew that I didn't want to die to save the game. At some point I thought that since I had come so far I should just try to finish the game. I hadn't died and I remember getting down to 1/2 heart in the stupid wizard dungeon with no potions. I somehow managed to pull it out and finish the dungeon without dying. After that it was all downhill from there.

I died 152 times in the Gameboy Advance version of A Link to the Past (the game keeps track of how many times you died). To be fair, I was fourteen when I played it.

I still to this day do not understand how people passed the water level. i'm sure there's a youtube on it but i just don't care to anger myself.

ninja gaiden was another one i couldn't beat.

i did beat contra without the code.

on a more recent note, my kids had a bunch of friends over and i got a 12 kill crown dub win in Fortnite in front of a bunch of teenagers. they were impressed and hyping me.

i went and told my wife and she was not impressed nor did she give me a victory bang.
