Your post implied that there was a woke element about this movie, so I simply asked what was woke about it.

What would the wokesters chime in about? About the only thing I thought was a possible tip of the cap to that crowd was Hanno/Lucius' wife donning armor and going into battle. I really don't know if Numidian women fought in battle though, so it could be plausible.

Numidia was an odd choice by the filmmakers anyway, by the time of this movie's setting, Numidia had long since been brought into the fold of the Roman Empire. Parthia would have been much more realistic.

I figured how they associated an empire in decline with debauchery would get some eyes. The weaker twin seemed to have a certain preference of concubine. The general androgyny of the twins. The games announcer was a significant departure from the masculinity of the protagonists.

I thought these were a little heavy handed and were not cast in a positive light.

This is a good example of a sequel that didn't need to be made, but was fine as a movie. It definitely doesn't live up to the original, but I was entertained.

They definitely retconned Lucius' age by saying he was 12 in this movie when Maximus and Commodus died. The first movie stated both Maximus' son and Lucius were 8.

Mescal does a good enough job but it really illustrates how much Crowe brought to the role. Also they just didn't do a great job writing the Lucius character. He isn't well fleshed out or given time to grow.

I think the movie tried to fit too much and doesn't allow any of it to develop fully and feels rushed, even though the movie was so long.

I think Denzel was great, I enjoyed his character.

The action pieces in the colosseum were great, but they all ended so quickly. Also, what was the point of having the entire group of gladiators vs. the Rhino guy. They all disappear and Lucius has to 1v1 him lol

It's definitely good enough to go and enjoy at the theater. Just turn your brain off and have fun. It's like Mr. Pibb of movies. Not great but it'll do.

Definitely theater worthy. As a matter of fact, this movie is a visual spectacle and probably wont translate onto the small screen like its predecessor.

The history is awful though, so be warned.

I thought this was a disjointed movie. Storylines didn't really seem to fit together and the retcon of Lucius's father really didn't work for me. Made me wonder if I had missed something in the original Gladiator instead of thinking about the movie I was watching. Some of the hand to hand action scenes were great. Denzel was really good. I did not enjoy the performances by the Emperors and thought that they really paled in comparison to Joaquin. Mescal was good, but not great. I don't think that there were any iconic scenes or lines in the movie. Wish it had been a bit better.

One thing that annoyed me was all of the vague "dream of Rome" stuff as if without some corrupt emperors and the praetorian guard, the people of Rome were yearning to get Rome back to some idealized state...but of what? Even before it became an empire it was a republic controlled by a small handful of ultra-wealthy families and with an economy increasingly reliant on slave labor. They'd long ago steamrolled most states and tribes in the region, genociding some of them and selling entire groups into slavery. There was no dream of Rome except imperium. Not sure if the American audience understands that.

That's a common theme among American historical movies, though. Braveheart is easily one of my favorite movies, but the concept of freedom they're trying to sell in that movie was something that would have totally foreign in 13th century Scotland.

Saw it tonight and agree with most of the takes here. I don't know why they have to try to link these sequels so closely to the original and would rather they just create an original storyline. When you try to force so many callouts to the first film it just doesn't ring true and seems forced and in this case a few really dumb scenes.

My biggest question mark is how does this guy go from being a slave/gladiator to convincing the Roman Legion that he is royal blood and the rightful heir to the throne just like that? Hey no proof really I'm just going to say so and ya don't question me about it.

True, but Romans of the 2nd-3rd centuries CE idealized Rome's past as a republic of hard men who carved out an empire through blood, sweat, and tears. It was just funny to me that Lucius stood there at the end between two armies and basically told them no one needed to die and they should build back better and focus on domestic issues and infrastructure and education reform and stuff like he was the keynote of the DNC. I guess David Scarpa didn't want him to motivate the guys with a rousing speech about going Scipio all over Asia and looting it as much as possible. Also probably had a football coach for his world history teacher like most people in the audience.

There is evidence the Romans staged aquatic coliseum battles. They were called naumachia. In actuality the coliseum wasn't large enough to maneuver the ships much, like we saw in the movie. And the sharks were definitely movie magic.
