Saving Private Ryan is the best war film ever created.

My favorite would probably be Midway (2019). The original was long my favorite despite its use of inaccurate archival footage and a sappy romantic subplot.

Others:
Battle of Britain
Enemy At the Gates
Saving Private Ryan
Empire of the Sun
Battle of the Bulge
The Bridges At Toko-Ri
Devotion
Flight of the Intruder
Apocalypse Now
The Longest Day
They Were Expendable
PT-109

Edit - after seeing some other responses, will add Patton (which I consider more a biopic than actual war movie), Das Boot, and We Were Soldiers.

OP said movie, but I don't really distinguish between movie and mini-series, so throwing both Band of Brothers and The Pacific in there. Heck, I'll even give a shout out to those 80s mini-series, The Winds of War & War and Remembrance.

I've never understood the distinction between movie and miniseries. Is a miniseries not a TV movie that just runs longer than even the longest of theatrical movies?

My grandfather was a SFC in the armored infantry in Europe, so Fury resonated a lot with me. He told a story that was nearly identical to the scene where Pitt's character orders the private to execute the Nazi POW.

Some people would argue it's a TV show, not a movie...I'm with you (at least as it relates to BoB in the context of greatest war movies)

Solid movies mentioned so far

I'll add:
Braveheart
Lawrence of Arabia (if we can include Patton, we can include Lawrence!)
Empire strikes back (battle of Hoth is dope, y'all)

I love them all, but when my son is old enough to watch understand and watch war movies, these will be the ones I start with.

Apocalypse Now - The directors Cut is worth the time investment

Saving Private Ryan

The Hurt Locker - I think this one is criminally underrated even though it won best picture. It's not supposed to be realistic.

Full Metal Jacket

BoB
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
The Hunt for Red October

Cold "War" Movies:

I heard a guy tell a story about seeing Fury in the movie theaters.

He was in Iraq and saw some action. Never really had issues with PTSD or any kind of flash backs. He said they were sitting in the movie theater and the first time one of the tanks shot and that tracer came out he grabbed his wife/girlfriend and they were on the floor. Just a reaction. He ended up leaving the theater more because he was embarrassed about dragging his gf on the floor. He said those tracers really got him.

Civil War: Gods and Generals

WW1: 1917

WW2: Saving Private Ryan and Patton. Inglorious Basterds and Jojo Rabbit is up there too, but I'm not sure if they should count in the context of the thread.

Vietnam: Full Metal Jacket. Forest Gump honorable mention

Cold War: HFTRO and Charlie Wilson's War

Middle Eastern Wars post Cold War: Lone Survivor

I might be a Tom Hanks fan looking back at this list.

Agree 100% that this is an amazing film and highly underrated.

This was a terrible decision to release this film in August 1987. It was the year of Vietnam War flicks with Platoon releasing in February and Full Metal Jacket in July. I think the film going public was fatigued on this genre at that point. Release this at Thanksgiving or the following year and I would have been a much bigger hit.

Just thought of another Vietnam War masterpiece: Bat 21

Bosnia -- Behind Enemy Lines, if just for the recon flight / shootdown scene alone.

Drugs: Clear and Present Danger

Terror: Zero Dark Thirty
