Love Memphis Belle but it hasn't aged well. Would love there to be a new movie revolving around strategic bombing with better visuals.

Just curious, why do you say Memphis Belle hasn't aged well?

Since the thread is going in all directions at this point, if you are a fan of hyperviolent movies like John Wick, the movie SISU takes place in WW2 Finland. Certainly not the best, but a good escapist movie.

Their limitations of special and practical effects don't look great compared to what could be done today. Still a great story and great characters, but we are just spoiled these days with insane budgets and better visual storytelling. I'm hoping Masters of the Air shows how much more gripping and terrifying a movie about the air war can be when made to today's standards.

Red Tails exemplifies both the good and the bad in what can be done today. It's a decent enough movie with some fine aerial sequences, but too often they depicted aircraft maneuvering in ways physically beyond those airframes or pilots.

I'll take Memphis Belle over something like Red Tails.

But I do agree that Masters of the Air has a great opportunity to elevate the effects without delving into comic book/sci-fi territory.

Have y'all watched the Catch-22 series? Came out in 2019 on Hulu. Follows the book pretty closely, so if you didn't like the themes and characters from the book, you probably won't like them in the series either.

The reason I bring it up is that they used real B-25 airframes (and a couple other period planes) in combination with more modern CG approaches. Made for some interesting combat and transport scenes.

Also, Der Rote Baron (2008 German film) had some cool aerial combat scenes but I don't think they had real planes involved. There's one nighttime flying scene that was visually pretty incredible.

The longest day
This has been my favorite since I was a kid. I grew up in the 1970s and was a huge WW2 buff.

The Longest Day is a great movie about D-Day and has an all-star cast of some of the famous actors in history.

These are just some of the actors in this movie:

John Wayne
Henry Fonda
Robert Mitchum
Sean Connery
Eddie Albert
Curd Jrgens
Richard Todd
Richard Burton
Peter Lawford
Rod Steiger
Irina Demick
Gert Fröbe
Edmond O'Brien
Kenneth More

Outstanding film. The book (Mark Bowden) is the best non-fiction war novel I have ever read. The research he did for it was mind blowing.

It was required reading for my 20th Century military history class at A&M.

A few other ones I really enjoyed and are not American made:
1944 - about Estonian SS troops
April 9 - German invasion of Denmark
Letters from Iwo Jima
Generation War - German WWII film
Gallipoli - Aussie Miniseries

ETA a movie called My Way Korean film based on a true story of a man conscripted by the Japanese to fight the Russians, gets captured, forced on the Red Army to fight the Germans, and then gets captured and forced into an Ost Battalion to man the defenses of Normandy, where you guessed it, he fights the Americans and is captured in June 6, 1944.

Glad Cinco Ranch mentioned Flight of the Intruder early. Loved that as a kid (loved all the flight focused films). Memphis Belle was also high up for me.

Nobody has mentioned a "war on drugs" movie but I'll nominate Sicario. Awesome movie that was intense.

Letters from Iwo Jima is Clint Eastwood and is a story of the other side that goes as a companion piece with his Flags of Our Fathers.

It is a phenomenal film.

Gallipoli - Aussie Miniseries

Is this the Mel Gibsom Movie? Or is there a miniseries with that title?

I remember an Aussie Mini series entitled "Anzacs: the War down under" with Paul Hogan. It dealt with Gallupoli and after it as well. I wish I could find it on streaming somewhere.

It's a separate miniseries. Made in 2015 for the anniversary.
Different from Mel Gibsons film (which is also great)

One of my favorite ww1 movies ever was "the Light Horsemen"

the plot and buildup to this charge was unique and fascinating, so you may not want to watch the clip....but about half way into this video, they hit it and it is a memorably grand scene....

I am a huge fan of many of these on the list. Wanted to add a few more that I really enjoyed, not necessarily my favorites of all time.

Restrepo/Korengal/Only The Dead (GWOT)

I loved Dunkirk but not for everyone.

Watched Platoon for the first time recently and that was very good.

Miscellaneous picks of Last of the Mohicans and Master and Commander.

SPR is #1 in my book by a mile.

One minor correction. Generation Kill was Operation Iraqi Freedom, not Desert Storm. Just finished re-watching it last week. It is hard to believe how bad they made some of the officers look in the series, but from what I can tell, it was somewhat/fairly accurate.

Also just finished The Outpost. That was really good.
