All they had to do to "fix" the ending of Fury was:

1. Change the scenario from a senior NCO basically guilting his men in to staying to defend The Fury to him and his men staying because they had no other choice. In other words, because of the position of the advancing Germans they stood a better chance or surviving staying with the tank instead of fleeing.

2. The commanding German officer of the unit that assaulted The Fury would have been shot by own men for ordering wave after wave of infantry to die like that. It was final days of the war. The war was lost and they knew it. Germans were surrendering to British and American troops by hundreds of thousands. Just tone that scene down. Such a great movie didn't need a ridiculously huge body count end.

And for F's sake. Why did they store the extra ammo outside of the tank? LOL.

Would love there to be a new movie revolving around strategic bombing with better visuals.
You are going to get this when Masters of the Air comes to whichever service it will stream on. Will not be HBO as it was with Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Also not technically a movie, but still, I'm really looking forward to this one.

Das Boot was being re-shown in theaters when I was in my early or mid 20's, saw it and I was blown away. Really enjoy it and I should watch it again, it's been a while.

Saving Private Ryan is obviously great as well as Band of Brothers. All of these show the glory, tragedy, and futility of war.

Outstanding film. The book (Mark Bowden) is the best non-fiction war novel I have ever read. The research he did for it was mind blowing.

It was required reading for my 20th Century military history class at A&M.

Due to this and other recent discussions, I restarted The Pacific last night. I've never rewatched it, even though I've watched BoB 1000 times. I think it was just harder and rougher to watch. But the time between watching makes it almost new and I definitely appreciate it more this time.

John Basilone. Wow. If only he lived to write a book along with Leckey and Sledgehammer.

Just for recent movies, going to second Greyhound. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor, get Appletv and watch it.

Also Fury. Wow.

Not a battlefield war movie, but certainly war related ans deserving of a mention is Darkest Hour. Phenomenal movie.

BoB is the greatest cinema I've ever watched - movie/miniseries/show however you need to classify it.

Others I haven't seen mentioned:

The 12th Man - based on the book, We Die Alone....the story of Norwegian resistance fighter Jan Baalsrud

The Way Back - based on the book, The Long Walk....the story of WWII Soviet gulag escapees journey

The Kings Choice - story of Norway's King Haakon's decisions leading up to and during the Nazi invasion of Norway

I'd love to see movies made from these books...

The Winter Fortress - Neal Bascomb
In the Unlikeliest of Places - Berkovits
Beneath a Scarlet Sky - Mark Sullivan

Never really understood the love for saving private Ryan. After the first 20 or so minutes of the storming the beach scene, which is incredible, it's very meh to me.

Yes! Finally. I loved the first few minutes because it was amazing. To me, after that it became basic blockbuster fare.

The others that are only marginally "war movies" because they fall more within the realm of intelligence/espionage are Zero Dark Thirty and Munich. Those are two movies I consider damn near perfect in depicting what they set out to depict. The UBL compound raid at the end of ZDT is so freaking cool, gives me goosebumps, and the tension and moral struggle of Munich and its quality as a period piece...Spielberg is just a master.

Almost Always the book is better than the movie adaptation

Ferg, I know The Battle of the Bulge has a lot of inaccuracies,, but it is still one of MY favorites. I just brought up the inaccuracies of The Hurt Locker because it got so much critical acclaim for it's "gritty realism."

Emotional Support Cobra Thanks for bringing up Wind Talkers, I forgot about it. I Will add it to my list

If you read the book Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright or watch the miniseries based on the book, you'll have a different feeling regarding Zero Dark Thirty.

Saving Private Ryan #1. Remember getting my tub of buttered popcorn and settling into my seat at the local theater knowing this was going to be a really good film. Then it started! Whoa those first five minutes I was stunned, put the popcorn down and watched to me the most riveting and realistic war movie ever made!

Probably referencing the belief that had we not bungled years of opportunities to prevent 9-11 from happening, the mission to capture OBL wouldn't have been necessary.

I will say it is pretty violent in the battle scenes. It probably got panned because of Nicholas Cage existing in the movie.

There was practically ZERO information shared between the different governmental alphabet agencies. The FBI started investigating Al-Qeada following the 12OCT2000 USS Cole bombing. Had the cia shared some of the info they had on al-Qeada with the fbi, they might have been able to catch osama bin laden before the 9-11 attacks happened.

The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright is a very well written book that is pretty easy to read. It will piss you off while you are reading it. The 10 part 2018 miniseries The Looming Tower starring Jeff Daniels stays pretty true to the book

Ah ok, gotcha. Yeah I haven't read that but was definitely aware that UBL was on our radar and we let him slip through our fingers multiple times ahead of 9/11. Hindsight is 20/20.
