I don't care if Little Mermaid is black or if Batman or even James Bond. The character matters. It wouldn't make sense to have a white Black Panther just like it wouldn't make sense to have a black Robin Hood or King Arthur. It wouldn't make sense to have a black Captain America that has origins in World War 2. If ethnicity is tied to the character, then race matters. If not, I don't really care what skin color the character has. I thought it was ridiculous that the new Vikings show on Netflix had a black woman ruler.
What about making Alexander Hamilton a person of color? Would that make sense?

If it was based on reality, then no it wouldn't. The musical (which I haven't seen) is not. I view it as more of a parody.

The founding fathers also didn't sing and rap. Like I said, I view it as a parody, so I don't really care. It's a musical not really meant to be taken seriously as historical fact. If it was made into a legit movie, that would be different. If Disney has Taylor Swift in Princess and the Frog, I wouldn't care just like I don't care about a non white person playing Ariel. Seems like a really weird thing for people to get bent out of shape about.

You could see it that way, or you could consider that it's a pretty weird move to make in the first place. Why not just make a faitful adaptation that heavily relies upon the nostalgia factor to make money? What is wrong with that? Disney's marketing tactic for the last few years has been "this ain't your grandma's _______." It's the lamest form of pandering. They could be making bank if they'd just respond to what most of their potential audience wants. The woke crowd wouldn't hype it, but they had disdain for Top Gun Maverick and Mario Bros and those still did really well. Like was said before, just stop listening to them, their praise and shaming are equally empty.

I feel like you read 2 or 3 random tweets by psychos in their basement and then just paint with the broadest of brushes. You went from "the entire woke left" criticized Top Gun Maverick, to "go look at reddit and twitter" and I can't think of one person in real life I know (many progressive, liberal, etc.) who had anything but good things to say about that movie. Hell Spielberg stopped Tom Cruise at the Oscars and told him he saved cinema with that movie.

The only person *****ing about Mario Bros was Leguizamo and nobody gives a **** about him at all. So it was him + a few trolls online. Maybe a random axios article that nobody gave a **** about, but that's a far cry from some wave of criticism.

Agree 100%.

I mean, I'm progressive and I enjoyed the hell out of Maverick. Was a 2 hour infomercial for the military industrial complex, sure, but I still enjoyed it for what it was. Turn your brain off and be entertained for a couple of hours.

I gotta say, some of you guys come off as a bunch of dang snowflakes. I mean, damn...some of you are so easily triggered, which is so ironic because it's the left that is supposed to be perpetually triggered.

This film is being marketed specifically to Christian and conservative audiences through Christian and conservative channels. I don't think it's a surprise that it's being ignored by the rest of the population. The choice of subject is also controversial. His organization is not always well regarded by others working on trafficking.

In my mind, musicals and plays are definitely fair ground to have atypical character representation. Heck, Denzel Washington played in 2005 in Caeser and recently in MacBeth. Would be awesome to see Denzel on Broadway. That format of entertainment is different though than tv or movie.

Finally saw it with my wife at Cinemark Cut! in Frisco. It was very powerful but I s*** you not, it was at least 85 degrees in the theater. My wife was fanning herself the last 1/3 of the movie. Afterwards, she was like "are we crazy or was that the hottest it's ever been in a movie theater in our lives." She got mad when I told her about the conspiracy theory about no AC because she wouldn't have worn jeans.

She actually brought a blanket because she just assumed it would be freezing. As we walked out I overheard others complaining too so I said "I bet you anything it's 65 degrees at the Barbie showing." I almost went in to confirm but my wife dragged me away."

In the lobby it was very pleasant and cool but I get it, there isn't a packed theater full of people but again, my wife and I have been to a ton of movies in our lives and that was the hottest we've ever been.

Sorry is this adds fuel to the conspiracy fire but it was ridiculously warm. For the record I saw Spiderman - Across the Spiderverse with my son at the same theater and same wing (I can't remember which exact theater room) and it was cold. This was just a few weeks ago and it was during the day and hot as hell outside.

The "theory" online that my wife just read, and of course take this with a grain of salt, is that it's a concerted effort to get people to complain to the manager so they'll refund the tickets and that money won't go to the studio.

Of course at this point with the Streisand effect and the movie already over 100 million it seems silly a theater would do that to intentionally piss off their customers. My wife already said she's never going back to Cinemark Cut. Spoiler alert, my wife can hold a grudge.

My theater was fine. And it was crowded. I am guessing a big part of it is showings are being put in the smaller theater rooms and they are also mostly full. That much body heat in a small area will make a difference.

I could see that if it was an older theater for sure but this one was built like 4 years ago...in Texas, where we always have hot ass summers.

Maybe that's all it is but I've been in plenty of smaller crowded theaters (the Spiderman movie I referenced above was pretty full and during the hottest part of the day) and it was nice and cool inside.

Air conditioners break sometimes. Or even if its something really simple like being low on freon, the a/c is going to have a really hard time keeping up, especially in July in Texas.

Each theater room most likely has its own roof top unit. One single theater can be not working correctly and it wouldn't affect any of the other theaters or the lobby at all.
