When it comes to Tron: Legacy, I absolutely love the look, vibe, and of course the score. It's one of the best looking, best sounding blockbusters ever, which has been more than enough to warrant my multiple rewatches over the years. In fact, in the lead up to Ares, the movie is apparently coming to 4K this year, for the first time, and I can't wait to watch it again for that reason alone.

For me, though, plot-wise, the problem Legacy runs into is that it ultimately tells the story of a hero (Sam) attempting to save someone (his father) who doesn't want to be saved. In what should be an incredibly emotional if not triumphant moment, it feels like the plot comes to a screeching halt the second Sam sees his dad again for the first time… and his dad just isn't that fired up to see him. Which kind of kills the rest of the movie for me. IMO, it would have worked so much better if his dad had been trapped down there against his will, or held prisoner all that time, and then it essentially became a prison break/heist movie, with Sam trying to save his willing and appreciative father.

It's that, and the computer world itself not being fully explained or explored that knocks the movie down a peg or two in my book. I wanted to know more about the rules of the world, how sentient the various programs were, can they or Sam come back from being derezzed, etc. I really needed a couple of those Morpheus-explaining-the-rules-of-the-matrix-to-Neo scenes, where it's mixing exposition with training or action.

To that end, while the early "games" sequence is incredible to look at, it was way too convenient for me that Sam, having not even been in the computer world for 20 minutes, is either instantly a badass at everything, or gets by on pure, dumb luck. When a potentially better movie would have thrown him in prison with his dad, with the plot basically becoming Tron: Gladiator, where, as "slaves," it's Flynn training Sam in the ways of the computer world, while Sam has to compete in the games throughout the movie, all as he and Kevin are covertly working on a way to break out, maybe with the help of Quorra or whoever.

I don't know.

Just anything to better-serve the momentum of the plot and immersiveness of the world. Otherwise, as-is, it has a bit of Last Jedi-itus for me, where it's a protagonist spending way too much time trying to convince the old, reluctant, curmudgeon mentor to go on a quest, which just isn't that compelling or emotionally involving to me, plot or character-wise.

That said, keep the final act basically act as-is, because that "air" battle/chase sequence is awesome/incredible just to look at, and I do love the ending.

I have a bad feeling that we're going to see individual cops and soldiers shooting at the giant staple-looking ships in the new movie, much as they do in any bad alien/monster movie.

"Hmm, well this Godzilla chap is 600 feet tall and breathing nuclear fire, let me get out my service pistol and see if I can't take him down."

You said it later in your post, but I read this comment and immediately thought 'It sounds like he's describing Luke Skywalker in TLJ'.

I know I know, we don't need to revisit all of that in this thread, but man what a waste of one of the best hero's of all time.

I had to re-watch Legacy again last night after all of this. I realized that it's been a couple years which is way too long. I never thought of Flynn Sr. that way... more of a given up hope sorta vibe. He deemed it was too risky to try because if CLU got his disk he could invade the real world. "The only way to win is to not play" he says. Sam was the catalyst to get the old man off his butt and go for it.

I don't necessarily disagree because there is a lot of convenience there, but I'll give the movie some credit. They do some fun/clever things which does bring some charm to the Sam character.

When he doesn't catch his disk cleanly and has to do a double/triple clutch to avoid dropping it... that quiet little "Damnit" is one of my favorite parts of the movie. There are also a couple other examples like Rinzler splitting his disks "Oh come on, is that even legal" or when he holds the Light Bike stick like it's a sword... brings some lightheartedness to the movie without it being cheesy.

Both fair points. To the first what I'll say is that the there didn't have to be a CLU, that didn't have to be the rule/consequence, etc. I was talking more in terms of a big picture reset of the plot all around. That, and I'm of the belief that "the only way to win is to not play" as a character's point of view simply doesn't make for compelling drama, at least as executed in the movie. It's also yet another echo of TLJ, in that so much of the plot of that movie revolves around Luke, the Resistance, etc, NOT taking action, which kills momentum, is inherently antithetical to a propulsive plot, and often simply makes for bad, boring drama in the wrong hands.

Agree completely. Not a Jared Letto fan. Will it stop me from seeing the movie? I dont know yet. We'll see if the advertising convinces me.

This is going to be either really solid or a big flop. Word of mouth is going to carry this, IMO. I think it will open ok, but how good the story (and how easy it is to follow and believe) is what is going to help it. I'm willing to give Jared Leto the benefit of the doubt here for this. If this is just a money grab for Disney though, I'm expecting it to flop.

I probably won't see this until streaming. I just never thought much of the original beyond its innovative use of computer technology in its very (very) early CGI effects. I thought the sequel was awful. For this one, I'm just not buying the computer world breaking into the real world, if I'm interpreting the trailer right.

Will watch it despite Jared Leto. I'm one of the rare ones that enjoyed both of the first two films.

I had a little desire to see this before, but now I'm pretty sure I'm going to be skipping this one. Can't believe I'm saying that about a Tron movie in IMAX.
