So, despite growing up in the 80s, somehow I never saw 16 Candles, so based off this thread, I decided I should watch it... It definitely does not hold up. Unlike Blazing Saddles, which is very racist, but done in an anti racist way, 16 Candles is very rapey, but it's done in a pro-rape kind of way. Besides the whole part where Jake tells Anthony Michael Hall that he can rape his girlfriend, and later AMH actually does rape her. And not only that, but the girl seems to actually like it and decides to date him. You've also got AMH forcing himself in Molly Ringwald on multiple occasions.

Beyond AMH, Jake, who I guess is supposed to be the good guy, had no interest in Samantha until he found a note where she said she'd have sex with him.

Samantha sister also clearly got married while under the influence, which probably makes their marriage not valid. Also, it likely means her new husband started off the marriage by raping his wife on their wedding night.

Let's talk about the grandparents. First, Samantha's grandmother assaults her in the hall way by forcibly feeling her. What kind of sick grandparents talk about their grand daughter getting her boobs? Also, how do they have a foreign exchange student? They are clearly way to old. I'm fairly certain they only brought him over to be slave labor and do all the difficult manual work they are too old to do.

Lastly, who gets married in their sister's birthday?

The whole movie is seriously f'd up.

Seriously, you should watch it just because it's part of American culture. It was big enough to have a sequel 35 years later that "saved the cinema" according to Steven Spielberg.
