I can't say I was that disappointed because I prepared myself to be underwhelmed -- but had you told me that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey would be in The Dark Tower I would have thought it at least would have been competent.

Mine is The Dark Tower and it's not even close. There isn't enough time in the day to name the problems with the movie and where it fell short. I understand that there isn't time in two hours to do justice to a book series of that breadth, but still. Absolutely maddening.

Conversely, I though Ready Player One did a decent enough job translating the book into a movie. While it wasn't true to the book, the essence of it was there, and the changes they made served the purpose of telling the story on the screen (i.e., the first egg challenge). The book is better, but the movie is fine.

Running theme here of sequels, and even more disappointment for "Movie Part 3: The Money Grab".

A lot of "2s" were disappointing, only to be redeemed with the 3:

Back to the Future
Die Hard
Indy
Ocean's

I've been meh with every Jurassic Park movie after the original.
Same with Terminators after T2 and Alien after Aliens.

Ready Player One.

I loved the book. One of a few books I've read multiple times. The movie was just garbage.
This, but I will add I am Legend and Shutter Island.

I love all 3 books and hate all 3 movies.

I'll offer that most Grisham books have not lived up to expectation when put to the screen.

I should've mentioned Matrix Resurrections.

As a pretty big fan of the series (I've even come around on Revolutions quite a bit over the years), that movie was a complete nothing burger.

Usually I can get excited and enjoy a first time watch for a movie I'm really hyped for (ie. all the SW sequels), but even on the first watch the movie did absolutely nothing for me. All the fights and action scenes were boring, it was way too meta for its own good, and I kept waiting for the "moment" that some people had mentioned in their reviews that would be the new revolutionary thing like bullet time.

Obviously, that never came.

That's probably the best example of instant disappointment for me.

The Dark Knight Rises - There was so much hype behind that one and it didn't come close to being as good as the Dark Knight.

PS - Batman Returns will always be my favorite superhero movie.
Batman Returns is my favorite live action Batman movie. I do like a couple of the animated ones more.

Keaton and Nicholson in "original" Batman FTW. Then skip to The Dark Knight. Then Lego Batman Movie.

All the rest are disappoint.

I think a lot of people are naming book adaptations because the movie doesn't live up to the source material. Which I get on one hand, but I really try to separate the movie from the book and judge it on its own.

But I can't do that for World War Z. What made me excited about the idea of that movie was how the stories were told in the book and the global conflicts that were examined. But the movie did nothing like that. So although I think the movie is decent on its own, it's one of the only ones where I can't help but break my own rule because I can't separate the expectations set from the book.

Knowing that it is possible to hit the book adaptations out of the park ( See e.g. LOTR, Harry Potter, Blade Runner, Shawshank, Jaws, Godfather) is what makes the failure to do so disappointing. See e.g. LOTR, Harry Potter, Blade Runner, Shawshank, Jaws.

Thing is, Woo isn't a bad director. It just didn't work for this one.

Don't get me wrong … I enjoy the conversation and discussion … but what would you say is John Woo's best movie? I reviewed the list … I can't say I like any of his movies.

Tell me you've never read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep without telling me you've never read it. The movie certainly shared some plot points from the book, but the movie was more of an "inspired by" than an adaptation.

It's my definition. Whether it's strict or not, I have no idea.

Just giving you a hard time, but to me the movie and the book never really felt connected other than by a few characters and the overall plotline.

The Dark Tower is my #1 passion in books (and tattoos). Once I saw what they were doing and how it was progressing, I vowed to never see a single second of it, and I've held that promise so far. It seems like every few years someone vows to make it into a TV series. I kind of hope it never shows up as any medium but the book series.

Ready Player One was impossible to make from the book version unless they spent $50 trillion in copyright fees. The book was very nostalgic, and the movie as well for different reasons. The sequel to the book is possibly the worst thing I've ever read on purpose, possibly tied with a Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

not sure how many people actually despise Black Panther. but, that movie went way, way beyond just hype train. critic and audience scores had it rated among the greatest movies of all time not just a greatest comic book movie.

reality is that it is a very good movie but a far cry from the upper echelons of cinema. but there was a time period where anyone that suggested it wasn't the greatest of movies was overwhelmingly shouted down.

I thought it was trash soon as the end credits rolled. Everyone was so desperate for it to be good that lotsa people originally thought the movie was great. But as the years have gone by the masses have finally started to admit its dogshi*.

I actually think it's gone the other way. People acted originally like it had caused them all to have anal cancer. Over the years, it's been the prequel I watch the most - best soundtrack, best world building, and the end fight is still one of a kind.

The prequel trilogy had the building blocks of a good story but the execution was real bad. Terrible writing.

The sequel trilogy was just all around bad. The Force Awakens gave me a tiny bit of hope -- I liked and cared about Rey, Fin, and Poe and it had a few really fun moments. So even though the plot was trash I was like "okay maybe we'll have something here" but dude the other ones were just SOOOOO bad.

When I think of how terribly they bungled all of this it makes me very irritated. What might have been.

I'm sure it'll swing back in a few years once it's cool to hate it again. I showed it to my son a few weeks ago and I just… can't. The effects don't hold up well, and that was really the thing George was banking on in the prequels. The story is still bad and the characters are not likable. Actually, I'd say with the exception of Anakin. I never got the hate for his performance. He was the only character I kind of cared about.
