What an absolutely fascinating thread. I came to this board when I heard about Theoden King (may he rest in peace) and clicked on this thread by accident and somehow ended up reading every word. Taylor barely exists in my mind and I can't name five of her songs, much less albums, and I truly don't believe I have heard a song from front to end. But the unhinged disaster of this whole dialogue from predominantly middle aged white men over TS is so engrossing to someone who loves chaos and mayhem like myself.

Taylor is still a very talented artist and songwriter who knows her audience. IMO even her worst albums will still have a song or two that grow on you.
Personally, I think most of her stuff since 1989 has a bit of a "Answer in search of a problem" feel to it. As if she was advised that she had to undo every bit of what made her successful and set her apart when she broke through in country music and early pop stuff to be more 'serious' and 'complicated'. I don't necessarily get it, but she's still clearly talented enough to exist in multiple genres and has her core audience eating out of her hand. More power to her.
U2 is another good example. They don't fit traditional rock or pop. They began to use technology to market themselves and differentiate from others. The iPod commercial thing, having their new album automatically downloaded for free to everyone on iTunes which A LOT of people hated - but it was clever marketing. I think Taylor has done this in her own modern way. But make no mistake, she has become more of a 'brand' at this point. Her own corporate entity. Very calculated. It happens to a lot of insanely popular bands and musicians.
She is going to end up with songs at the top of the iTunes/Spotify/streaming charts and up there in downloads regardless of how 'good' it really is. Some people are turned off by all the marketing and try to make it seem like she's an awful musician - and I don't agree with that. While her sound isn't very original right now, and much of her latest content seems like filler - that doesn't discount all she's done in her career.
Personally, I would rather see her do an acoustic show with just her guitar and not all the glitter and choreography. But her audience wants the glitter and big display. Anything she puts out is going to sell and be treated like the greatest thing ever by her loyal followers.
I don't get all the extreme fangirl reactions to the critics who raise legitimate questions and points. Not everything she touches is amazing and great. I equally don't get all the extreme 'she has no talent' reactions either. She's written a lot of her own songs, and has become a very savy business woman.
I'll also add that I'm glad to be raising a son and not daughters - because there are so few ideal role models out there for young girls today (I'm talking pre-teen age). Nothing wrong with content that fits teen girls and 20-somethings - that's moved the needle with a lot of music going back to even the days of Elvis and early rock and roll. But I do cringe a bit when I see some of what these very young girls listen to these days.

Also you will see all of his credentials if you just look. He's not some no-name person in music. With that in mind, I don't listen to Taylor Swift.
I do however have 15 and 12 year old daughter who are big T. Swift fans.
We started listening to the album on the way to school yesterday morning and finished it yesterday evening.
I thought it was not good. Even my 15 year old looked at me and said "this is bad".
Clearly she's made some good music to get where she is today, at least a guy my age would assume.
All I heard was subdued, electronic, mood music and some TERRIBLE effing lyrics.
I mean, like really bad.
I don't see how this could be considered anything but a miss.

I just find it funny that a popular youtuber who is also a songwriter/musician that releases songs no one listens to on spotify likes to **** on the top 10 pop songs on spotify. And its even funnier that you immediately defend his talent as a critic by the his views without realizing the irony.
FWIW his criticism was soundly based (ha, good pun) on the actual music. He wasn't just ****ting on it to **** on it...he expressed that he just wishes Taylor would do more now and evolve instead of retread her stuff. He's very open minded about music. Hell, he even lauded some Ariana Grande song on that same video.
I didn't listen to it, for some reason I just assumed based on the title "I thought the Spotify top 10 couldn't get any worse" would be just him ****ting on popular music.

Personally, I think most of her stuff since 1989 has a bit of a "Answer in search of a problem" feel to it. As if she was advised that she had to undo every bit of what made her successful and set her apart when she broke through in country music and early pop stuff to be more 'serious' and 'complicated'. I don't necessarily get it, but she's still clearly talented enough to exist in multiple genres and has her core audience eating out of her hand. More power to her.
U2 is another good example. They don't fit traditional rock or pop. They began to use technology to market themselves and differentiate from others. The iPod commercial thing, having their new album automatically downloaded for free to everyone on iTunes which A LOT of people hated - but it was clever marketing. I think Taylor has done this in her own modern way. But make no mistake, she has become more of a 'brand' at this point. Her own corporate entity. Very calculated. It happens to a lot of insanely popular bands and musicians.
She is going to end up with songs at the top of the iTunes/Spotify/streaming charts and up there in downloads regardless of how 'good' it really is. Some people are turned off by all the marketing and try to make it seem like she's an awful musician - and I don't agree with that. While her sound isn't very original right now, and much of her latest content seems like filler - that doesn't discount all she's done in her career.
Personally, I would rather see her do an acoustic show with just her guitar and not all the glitter and choreography. But her audience wants the glitter and big display. Anything she puts out is going to sell and be treated like the greatest thing ever by her loyal followers.
I don't get all the extreme fangirl reactions to the critics who raise legitimate questions and points. Not everything she touches is amazing and great. I equally don't get all the extreme 'she has no talent' reactions either. She's written a lot of her own songs, and has become a very savy business woman.
I'll also add that I'm glad to be raising a son and not daughters - because there are so few ideal role models out there for young girls today (I'm talking pre-teen age). Nothing wrong with content that fits teen girls and 20-somethings - that's moved the needle with a lot of music going back to even the days of Elvis and early rock and roll. But I do cringe a bit when I see some of what these very young girls listen to these days.
My 5 year old and 8 year old daughters love Taylor Swift and her songs. I've taken my oldest to an Angels and Airwaves concert as well.
I took my wife and girls to the Eras Movie Concert and it was an absolute blast. They danced all night in the aisles and talked about it for days. Very awesome family outing.

It feels like there's a virus going around this board, causing certain posters lose their minds, in the weirdest ways, across multiple threads now. More than usual, at least. If so, watching a grown ass man go out of his way - going on three weeks now - to criticize anyone who doesn't fully love the new Taylor Swift album, has to be the most bizarre symptom yet.
