Well, Bradley Cooper and a Civil War origin story was not what I was expecting tonight…

Watching a pretty good civil war short film followed by 'Directed by Danny McBride' was so weird.

After episode 2 I found myself wishing for more Civil War/Cooper story..

Show is gonna probably need to consider being funny again one of these weeks.

Episode 1 was great. Last 2 weeks, not so much.

Judy saying "One of them was even talking about stair lifts like Mrs. Deagle has in Gremlins." rolling BJ out of the hospital made me laugh pretty good.

Thought Sean William Scott provided no chemistry with the rest of the characters. With Megan Mullally it seemed like she had always been there but his scenes were kinda weird.

"Relax, okay? You don't need to be doin' pole math right now"

Judy and BJ scenes are my favorite.

This week was better than last week, but still not up to the earlier seasons.
Like I said earlier, I think the kinds of jokes they make have a shelf life, they're only funny for so long. We might have reached that point.

Still entertained but also still kind of surprised they came back for one more season after the last felt like a great wrap on the series.

Tim Baltz who plays BJ learned to pole dance for this season so it's actually him doing the routines.

Yeah, three episodes in and I'm starting to wonder if a fourth season was worth it. A few laughs here and there, but no central, over-arching plot yet, I don't really care where anything is going, and a lot of the shtick is starting to wear thin. I'll of course finish the season, I just find myself wishing we were still following Bradley Cooper's character instead.

my favorite episode of the entire series!

but that's because I am writing a book on the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley.

they did a good job with the reenactors and always Bradley Cooper is a great actor.

there were no Gatling machine guns used in the Civil War except in the trenches of Petersburg (due to the size and complexity and the waste of ammunition which was in short supply)

and the Union would not have shot prisoners of war who were regular Confederate soldiers wearing uniforms and in organized units (they would shoot Mosby's Rangers who were guerilla units)

this has been 100% of the time with any Danny Mcbride product with me. he invents new ways to make the same shtick work and it is successful for awhile and then he just beats you to death with it

the best characters in this show are Judy and BJ by far. the rest of them are worn out

I think making Kelvin and Keef an actual couple in this show has completely removed the comedy from it. Judy and BJ have gotten better every season and Jessy is getting outshined. Hope the season ends up being super good but as of right now I think I would have taken an entire season about Bradley Cooper lol.

Completely agree, especially on the Kelvin/Keef stuff. Their dynamic just isn't funny any more.

I have no issue with them being gay but there was something inherently funny about Keef massaging his bare ass and them being like 'we're really good friends'. Was one of the most consistent jokes in the show for me.

I know I am going to get dumped on pretty hard for this, but genuine question...does this show make fun of every day Christians/Christianity, or just the fake snake oil salesmen televangelist types? If the former, I just won't support it...if the latter, then HELL YEAH.

I loved Eastbound and Vice Principals and so did my wife, but just never got around to this one.

It's a fair question, no need to be dragged on it.

I think the show does a really good job on not dunking on Christianity while making fun of mega churches / televangelists.
TCTTS

Yeah, I don't think this show has ever once mocked the idea of Jesus, faith, Christianity itself, etc. It squarely makes fun of the ultra rich, southern, snake oil salesman, evangelical types. It does a really good job of walking that line.

Cool thx. Crazy timing but not 10 min after my above post I was explaining to a coworker how I need a pick-me-up show after watching 3-4 dystopian shows back to back and he mentioned that Season 4 of The Righteous Gemstones dropped earlier this month. Maybe the lord DOES work in mysterious ways.

I can't remember a single time where it has made fun of Christ. It is entirely making fun of the characters who happen to be Christian. There are other Christian characters who are portrayed much more positively than the main cast. Show is still very inappropriate tho, more so than Eastbound or VP.

yep. its just like on Its Always Sunny when Mac actually came out as gay. It just wasn't as funny as when he was in the closet defending all the gay things he was doing.

Kelvin rubbing the Prism/Christ follower of the year in Jesse's face is pretty funny though.

but if they are going to bring them out of the closet, they have to find other ways to keep the characters funny/interesting...like when Keefe was talking about Satan's piss. That had me rolling.

Precisely. Which is why Keef's speech about Satan's piss was funny. It was really weird and awkward, which was what made the Kelvin/Keef dynamic hilarious before they came out. A gay couple just being excessively gay isn't funny.

I stayed away from the show for a long time because with the amount of vitriol spewed out of hollywood towards Christianity i didn't want to be pissed off. i gave it a chance

As said earlier, in no way do i feel attacked as a believer.

The target here is the over the top, prosperity gospel preaching charlatan, who deserve every bit of what's coming to them.
DannyDuberstein

Yep, it mocks tv preacher-ism and charlatans, not Christianity. I'm sure some could find it offensive anyway but I think they handle not crossing the line well

Completely agree. IMO, if you feel like your faith is being personally attacked in this show you might want to double check what you're doing lol.
