Wait so Paul's kid will be Duncan Idaho's kid IRL?

That won't be confusing at all.

Welp, I've never read Children of Dune. I stopped after Dune Messiah. I am on a bit of a sci-fi reading streak right now, working through an old Alan Dean Foster novel titled Cachalot, then moving on to Project Hail Mary. After that I am planning a re-read of Dune Messiah. I suppose Children of Dune will follow. But at my reading rate, I have to wonder if I'll make it through CoD prior to the movie's release.
Would highly recommend reading all of Frank Herbert's 6 novels. The last 2 books are the best arc in the series, along with the best character in the series.

Really hoping for God Emperor and the Honored Matres arcs.

Is it accurate to say that the later books go down a really weird path?

I expect a lot of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune story arcs to be condensed and even happen way out of order.

And all I really want is to see a Navigator.

Currently my number one most anticipated trailer.

Now, to try and decipher what "soon" means.

Dune: Part Three is a Warner Bros movie, so chances are they attach it to another Warner Bros movie. However, none of their next three releases feel appropriate, genre-wise...

2.13 = Wuthering Heights
3.06 = The Bride!
3.27 = They Will Kill You

However, outside of Warner Bros, the upcoming movie that makes the most sense in terms of attachments would be Project Hail Mary on 3.20. In fact, WB could easily attach it to that, then have the trailer play with They Will Kill You (a psychological action/thriller) the very next weekend.

Granted, the trailer could technically release next week with Wuthering Heights - which is going to be big, also in IMAX, and would definitely qualify as soon soon - but outside of the studio connection that seems like such a random movie to debut a massive sci-fi trailer with. I'd certainly take it, though.

Otherwise, I'm sticking with it likely being with Project Hail Mary next month. We shall see...

Since this post, I have re-read Dune Messiah. I believe I better understood what Herbert was saying in the first sequel, and consequently I enjoyed it much more. Since then, I plowed right through Children of Dune almost like a hot knife through butter. I really enjoyed that one. And now 1/3 of the way through God Emperor of Dune, yes, I am hooked and in for the remaining two that Herbert wrote.

If you are already a third of the way through God Emperor, you are doing fantastic. I had never read past Messiah 40 years ago and the first Villanueve Dune movie motivated me to read the original six books, but God Emperor was a complete slog for me. Took me several months to finish it. The payoff of the last two books is worth it. I rank Heretics of Dune my second favorite of the six.

God Emperor is definitely a weird one. I keep thinking how they could possibly make this into a movie. I mean, I know they can, but I'm thinking they've already thought if they should to quote Ian Malcolm.

I read that Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune were intended as a trilogy, but when Frank Herbert died after completing that last book, his son came in and finished it based on Herbert's notes. So I will go ahead with the two books that came about due to those notes.

You could maybe do the Golden Path reveal in God Emperor in a few scenes and nothing else in the book. That book would be crazy difficult to adapt.

Yes, there is a missing Frank book that was never made. Brian's books do not have a good reputation so I've never read them. I did read the Wikipedia summaries to see the full plot of the missing book. It seemed like a lot of "And then this happened" that never made me want to read the actual book.

That's where it gets unbelievable.

Apparently the son and other author found some old ass floppy disks containing Frank's notes, yet there is absolutely no proof that the notes were followed. Brian and KJA don't even claim to be faithful to the notes, so you didn't read the plot of the missing book. You read the fan fiction created by a son who wanted to hop on the gravy train his dad left rolling.

Hard to say if the publisher contacted Brian first to see if there was interest in the estate continuing to build out the Dune franchise, or if it was the other way around.

The only thing clear is that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson put forth six prequels which laid out a very specific "thinking machines as the ultimate evil" storyline and two sequels to Chapterhouse: Dune which completely reinforced their make believe narrative.

There is absolutely zero hard evidence Frank intended the final book to be about the thinking machines. In fact it is 180 degrees away from how he ended Chapterhouse.

Because almost nothing happens in it. I realize I'm beating this to death but God Emperor is just one long philosophical talking book. Zero action. Would be boring as hell as a movie. I still think Messiah will divert from the book enough to make it digestible by the masses since he changed the ending of Dune in part 2 leading into Messiah.

I still need to read the final two books. I stopped after God Emperor because I had read the first four books back to back year before last.

IMDB lists actors for Leto II and Ghanima, so I'm expecting some influence from Children of Dune in Dune Part 3.

Considering how short Messiah is it sounds like he's combining those two books into this part 3 then.

That's I figured they would do, and I'm so freaking excited. Children of Dune was one of my favorites. I also really liked Chapterhouse and heretics a bunch as well.

They should combine Messiah and Children of Dune for this movie to end the Trilogy. Then I would make 2 movies out of Heretics and Chapterhouse, but cover God Emperor as an extended Prologue to start the Heretics movie. One can dream!

Which would also actually align the movies back to the books in that Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune were written as a trilogy. So, Villanova eventually did the original trilogy as movies but just cut it up differently.

I don't see why this is unbelievable. The Butlerian Jihad is a fundamental, underlying event that completely shaped the Dune universe read about in the novels. It makes total sense that the prequel novels would use that as a central theme. There is nothing make believe about that.

I have no opinion on what they did with sequels because that is a separate issue.

I don't see why this is unbelievable.

The poster I quoted said he read the full plot of the missing book. That is based upon inaccurate statements and half truths linked on Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia outlines of Hunters and Sandworms do not deal with the plot of the missing book, only that it was supposedly based on notes left behind. Wiki entries do give plot summaries of the stuff written by BH and KJA but nothing based concrete details left by Herbert himself.

The notes were not miraculously found until after the House prequels were written. So by the time the notes were discovered, the son and KJA already had a narrative in mind completely different from the ending of Chapterhouse.

So yes, it is completely unbelievable that anyone could read the plot of the missing book. Frank Herbert's notes on book 7 have never been made public.
