This one is probably.

Just FYI, I'm pretty sure that was an April Fool's joke, as it was April 1st in the timezone from which it was posted (DiscussingFilm is primarily based out of England). Lord and Miller mentioned that their initial "assembly cut" (which isn't really even a movie yet) was 3h 45m, but that it was "embarrassing" and that many parts of it "didn't land." In other words, I just can't see them releasing a version that's even longer than their assembly cut, as that wouldn't make any sense. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised.

Yeah, it was more wishful thinking since they left some of the best parts of the book out.

I would take a longer cut that wasn't a mess for sure. I'm still holding out a tiny hope we get a longer cut of Dune with that dinner scene that was cut.

while i definitely hope that Hail Mary makes a but ton of money domestically....where in the world is this guy getting the mario sequel "wont be as big as the original?"

already reading mario galaxy is set to beat the first movies long opening weekend and likely grossed close to 40 million just today.....

The first Mario did $205M domestic over its opening five-day weekend. As of the time of that tweet (24 hours ago), the sequel was "only" projected to do $175-$200M over its five-day weekend. Combined with worse reviews, projections had it falling just short of the original. That said, it's still early and $205M is obviously within reach, while reviews are basically meaningless for a movie like that. Still, that account is one of the most accurate/plugged-in box office prognosticators around, and I trust him more than just about anyone else.

Read The Martian…Absolutely worth it

I am currently reading The Martian. So far I concur.

I just laughed out loud over the end of one early chapter, after NASA has discovered that Mark Watney is still alive after his funeral. The NASA director says to someone, "I wonder what he's thinking right now?" This was followed up by a very short log entry, where Watney wonders how Aquaman communicates with whales. While that wasn't in the movie to my recollection, I found that to resonate much like the sequence at the mound in Bull Durham when the team was trying to figure out the pitcher's need to buy a wedding gift, or whatever that was.

They kept this in the movie and is a great scene with the NASA crew and when it switches to Watney he is complaining about the Disco music instead of the aquaman dialog.

My two cents as a guy who knew almost nothing about the plot going in:

-Gosling was amazing, carrying the film like that all by himself.
-I saw a late showing and was tired so I admittedly sort of glazed over at some part near the end. Not the movie's fault.
-I like it a lot, but I came home and told my wife, without even knowing this was a book, that the movie needed to be like an hour longer to really explain or show how a lot of his successes happened. I felt like we missed out on the struggle and joy of solving all the problems he had to solve. I'll absolutely be watching the 4 hour director's cut or whatever. I normally don't want long movies to be even longer, but this one I definitely did.
-Along those lines, I thought the way he and Rocky learned each other's languages was way too fast and easy in this movie. Granted, I'm comparing this to Arrival which is one of my all time favorite movies, and Arrival spent sooo much time on that, which I liked. This movie, it was just so fast and easy, that part didn't sit well with me.
-From there, I thought Rocky's tone and interactions got way too cutesy. Like, he understands humor and sarcasm? There's so much nuance to language, some of the ease of communication just felt like too much for me. I think it would have been more believable though if the process took a lot longer on film.
-Speaking of Rocky being too cutesy, I just didn't care for the way he went from basically being a stone crab to being portrayed with actual cuteness. To me that took away from the seriousness of the movie. Yes I did laugh at some of it, but still just didn't feel like it landed.
-All in all, I really, really liked it. Those are just nitpicks. I liked it enough that I'll see it again and I can't stop thinking about the movie. That's a winner. Gosling was a huge part of that. He just did so, so well.

I agree completely. Rocky was brilliant and did most of the science in the book. He figured out how to solve their most pressing problems and the movie glossed all over that.

Give it a decade and Amazon can turn it into a limited 6-8 episode series and really expand on the science. This cut was perfect for the theater.

Anyone wishing for more that's read the book should give the Audio Book a listen. IMO it's the best way to enjoy PHM although I loved reading the book and watching the movie as well

The book/audiobook is so worth it. The depth of the story really makes a difference there. I too, agree that the movie glossed over some stuff I wish it hadn't. But I also understand that decisions have to be made when it's already 2.5 hours long.

Saw the movie today. I'm a fan of Andy Weir's books and certainly enjoyed The Martian. Liked this movie, but I'm honestly not sure I could have kept up with it well without having read the book. Seems like I filled a lot of gaps in myself from the knowledge I had from the book. Just my opinion.

I saw it today, knew nothing going in, didn't feel more lost than any other syfi. I appreciated them not trying to get into the weeds on explaining science concepts, just doing a good story. Ryan G did a great job.

Spoiler tag just incase.
I can't remember the last time I went to a movie completely blind, I went with some family members last second. Didn't watch any trailers, nothing. One of the previews was for the audio book, mentioned the alien aspect and showed the alien ship from the movie. Would have been cool for that to be a surprise. Haha

Lots of people criticized the movie trailer for the same reason because it's definitely a surprise moment in the book.

This. My wife and I went last night (I read the book, she hadn't). And I kept thinking during the movie that 'no way non book readers are keeping up with the detail. And sure enough the after movie discussion revealed a lot of it didn't translate well enough.

I was surprised in the book. Gave the book to my son to read and even told him he wasn't going to suspect the surprise. Trailers ruined that.

In the book the ship and robot arm were a bigger character; I didn't like they rushed past that; it took Ryland awhile to earn the right to exit the medical bay.

The learned language was a bit quick; if I remember correctly the clocks were a bigger player. Ryland says math is the universal language; they showed each other their clocks and then went straight to recording words.

Regardless, I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed The Martian.

I read the book several years ago. Finally saw the movie. It was awesome.

I agree, the science and language were rushed. Maybe they could have shown that it took months to learn a few words without slowing the movie down.

Spaceship reveal could have been better.

They missed a great part of the book. After Ryland was settled for a while on Erid, Rocky said "good news from our scientists, your star is getting brighter". Really cool scene. Ryland just sent the probes out with hope. He had no way of knowing if they reached Earth, still had living bugs, etc. Big miss from movie script.

Just got out of the 8:30am showing at the IMAX in Dallas. I have not seen another movie that's as close to the book as this one. Both are outstanding!
I had heard the complaints about the humor, but that's how the book is! Gosling was very good in this role as Grace.
"Asked" my wife to go and she absolutely loved it!

The ONLY negative was the a-hole on the other side of my wife who dropped his phone loudly, then later his giant wad of keys, then again when he decided to search for his keys with his flashlight with about 30 minutes still to go, in the tiny imax rows/seats to boot, then again with his flashlight to look for something in his lap. I didn't know until afterwards that apparently he was chomping on his straw the whole time too, to my wife's major irritation.

Because of my misophonia, sitting in a movie theater is unbearable.

The constant popcorn chewing sends me into a near rage.

I guess that's why I rately go to crowded movies.

you should hear my wife eat carrots...oof.

Movie was really good, visually fantastic.

a little to simplified, and rocky was kind of reduced to a sidekick vs scientist, but movie cannot last 5 hours.

I bet it was filmed and will be included in the 4 hour cut Amazon will release after it leaves the theaters.

ETA - there is a scene where Stratt is watching the video from Ryland (which wasn't in the book) and I actually like that better as you get to see her reaction which made the "reveal" from the Erid scientists mostly moot (you have to assume Stratt's team will employ the fix). I still bet they filmed it in the longer version.

It may have more practical than anything else. In order to do that scene right you'd have had to age Gosling 16-20 years. They may have even tried it and didn't like how it turned out. I did like the fact that they included Rocky being seen by Strat. That was one element I wondered about when the book ended.

Not sure if he plans to do a sequel, but I think it'd be cool to be a fast forward and Grace is returning to Earth. Eridians are a lot smarter than humans, they just didn't have the need to come up with all of the things that have driven modern science. We handed that to them in the laptop. So have Grace come to Earth because Eridians have mastered quantum physics and created FTL. Except "Grace" is actually Rocky's kid, then go from there.

It was announced they're doing a VR game. Weir is involved, and it looks like it's just immersing you into a part of the story vs trying to tack on a bad sequel. Hopefully they stay true to the heart of the story.

Trying to avoid things on this thread but heard something today that's pretty cool….

Since dvds are all but dead along with that has been the extras that people have come to enjoy, mainly the dvd commentary in this case…apparently there's an app the director is using for this and you can go back and watch the movie with this app and along with your phone and ear buds listen to the director's commentary for this movie while in theaters….

That is honestly a really cool idea and for a film like this could really help it keep a solid hold in theaters…

Saw it again with the kids this time. It was a perfect adaptation from the book. If the movie was longer it would have driven the non book readers nuts. If it was shorter then the book readers would have lost their minds. Great balance. And again, the sounds and music hit harder than the visuals.

I still think a 10 episode HBO would've been perfect.

Expand on Strout. Expand on the astronauts that died. Expand on Grace.

Who knows. 20 years later they did the same with Harry Potter.
