And sure Disney got money off of Little Mermaid. Doesn't change the fact that they decided to check a box on the casting of the main character.
They made a casting decision that made them a $600M movie.

That isn't "woke". Or checking a box. ( It's a fkn mermaid, who is a mythical creature. Mythical creatures don't come with skin colors).

And- to the topic, it's a horrible example of why "wokeness" (and it's alleged increasing frequency) is why people aren't going to movies as much this year. Because people sure showed up for that one.

Again- name all these "woke" movies over the past few years that have turned people away from going at all.

So far, the circle jerkers have had to go back multiple years to find even one, were wrong about it, then resorted to talking about radio.

The only people *****ing about "woke" at this point are conservatives who have built their identity around being "anti-woke." It's pathetic.

Or perhaps they're pissed about the intrusion of politics into entertainment. The theater was once a place where, largely, one could go to get away from whatever real crap is going on in the world. Even for only a couple of hours. But now, you step into a theater and you still see this crap. That is what is pathetic.

You… you think that's new?

It is not new but what is new is the frequency of this in a wide range of movies. Expect it in a movie like The Crying Game, but not in some animated kid's movie or Star Wars.

Star Wars was intended in part as an allegory on Vietnam.

That isn't woke. But a woman kissing another woman is.

So, Andor?

Was thinking more of The Rise of Skywalker

I still really enjoy going to the movies. Drafthouse has a good member deal where 2 movies or more a month pay for itself, and there are the benefits of no ads, good food and a full bar, and a strict no disruption policy. I hope producers adjust their costs and thrive again.

So you want to make a statement of "intrusion of politics" with "frequency".

And when asked what those "intrusions" are the best you can come up with is one movie in 2019.

But you want to claim "frequency".

Conversely, something like the all girl fight team in Endgame was eye rollingly bad. Totally shoe horned in for a political statement.

I am tiring of you. There are plenty more examples but that is for you to look up. I have skipped a number of movies based on reviews commenting on the woke crap in them. No, I am not writing a novel for you to list out the titles.

And that goes back to something on this topic I've said before, that the issue is generally with the talent of the creator and not the content.

A show like Andor with its cast and themes is pretty much "woke" by definition (and I'm sure if I googled I'd find that someone complained about it). But because it was an insanely good show it gets a pass.

That's not how intelligent conversation works. You made a claim, got challenged on specifics of that claim, and can't provide examples. That's on you to back up.

Now you are claiming you skipped multiple movies because of perceived "wokeness.". No one is asking for a novel. List 3-5 movies you skipped and how you knew their "woke" content if you didn't see them.

Lol at pointing to total revenue as your point on the health of an industry. It's like my liberal father always talking up California by pointing out GDP. That tells us nothing about how much actual profit is being taken in. On top of that, it doesn't take into account inflation at all.

But let's just point to the stats we like, because it paints a better picture that I feel more comfortable with.

There are very few movies released that I actually care to see. Hell, the movie that's killing it on views is Kpop demon hunters, which did very well in theaters with their Sing a long version. The actual version is still #2 on Netflix and the sing along version is #7. There is still an audience out there for good stories and fresh visions. Also... guess what? No woke or preachiness. It's amazing how well movies that don't preach woke politics do so well...

People who don't pray to the Hollygods can easily be comfortably unaware of the latest "blockbuster" movies.

Jurassic park was a summer movie?! Thought it was legit like 6 mo this ago but checks notes it came out 2 months ago. Superman? Someone asked me if I had seen it and I said no, got looked at like I had a third eye growing out of my chin. F1? Only thought that comes to mind was Matt Damon is the star, right? Upon looking, I'm wrong there too.

These movies don't interest me. I have more tangible pursuits so my brain can easily filter out the inconsequential noise.

I made an observation on another thread a while back that a huge percentage of the highest grossing animated films are pre-2019, and that's not at all surprising.

Covid/streaming services have made it really easy to wait a couple extra weeks for a film to drop onto D+ or wherever, given the choice of a short wait or paying 100 bucks plus for a family movie trip a whole lot of folks are just going to wait.

Add to that the straight to streaming films that are really good (K-Pop Demon Hunters literally went INTO theaters because it was so popular) and there no need for many to go see something in the theater.

I personally really enjoy the theater experience, but with little ones at home don't get to go as often as I'd like.

Or, as my 4 year old calls it, Cake Pop Demon Hunters

Definitely a mix of people tired of so many lackluster soulless cash-grab reboots, lack of relatable stars with broad appeal, too much woke messaging, high ticket prices on top of cost of living in general being ****ed, and poor theater etiquette making people who hate distractions never want to go back again. People also like to support companies/makers/industries they imagine kind of appreciate them, and anyone right of center knows that these studios, these actors, these executives utterly despise us, so we have better things to spend our time/money on.

From my seat, Hollywood just doesn't have many A list producers or actors anymore. Where is the action genre like Rambo and Die Hard, or the sport dramas of Rocky or the emotional drama like Scent of a Woman or Driving Miss Daisy? I keep being told that there are all these unbelievable awesome movies out but I try to watch them and my eyes just say they are nowhere in the stratosphere of past masterpieces. Top Gun and F1 were trend breakers. Watched both of those and got so excited of feeling back in the 80s/90s that I went back and watched each one multiple times. No other movies are drawing me to them. Weird. I want to like all the new stuff. I love going to the theater. I don't get bogged down on politics though I understand why others do. I'm fortunate in that cost is not a deterrent. Hollywood just isn't making good movies for my taste. They are making movies they want to make and trying to convince me that I should like it.

I've lived in LA/worked in this industry for 20 years and have never once met someone who meets this description or has expressed this sentiment. Are there some loud, far-left, self-important "creatives"/lunatics who feel this way? Sure. Otherwise, this is such drama queen, looking-to-be-offended nonsense that makes it apparent you've never interacted with the people you actually despise just as much as you claim they "utterly despise" you.
