to be honest I thought your OP meant one banger type album with a one hit and then nothing else of note. It's almost impossible that a band, unless they dissolved, had just a single album release.

Take Silverchair for example. They released 5 albums but no one really cares or remembers any of them but Frogstomp.

Or Blur

9 albums but Song 2 on their 5th and self titled album is the only song anyone knows.

Where did I say that a band dissolving doesn't count? That is likely the ONLY reason why a band makes this list.
The La's seems to be an outlier.. they were together initially for 9 years, with a short reformation a few years later, and a few more reformations since the 90s, all with 2 original members.. yet they made just ONE album, and undoubtedly had just one really big hit.

While I don't agree a solo project/side project/supergroup should be automatically eliminated, I do agree that maybe some of those had multiple hits (or no hits??). Arc Angels I see performed 2 songs on letterman..

Many supergroups/sideprojects/solo projects do multiple albums (chris cornell, phil collins, highwaymen, willburys, velvet revolver, APC, audioslave, etc etc), so them doing only 1 is half of this requirement and should keep them on the list. It's certainly easier for someone with previous success to get the 'hit', but also maybe hard to only have ONE hit. Like debut albums of audioslave, APC, velvet.. multiple hits on those.

Re Jeff Buckley: An artist dying is certainly not a dis-qualifier. That and band breaking up are about the only two reasons why someone ends up on this list.

I would disagree on supergroups/side projects. It's more common for them to have one album than not, so not a big deal. Clapton had a crap ton of hits under a bunch of different bands and labels. Him doing a couple side projects that only had one album isn't really that interesting or strange.

4 Non Blondes breaking up after having a huge hit a then nothing of note recorded is more unique. Another side note. Linda Perry also contributed to Sheryl Crowe's seminal album. Wonder if that was a requirement.

Dying doesn't really disqualify you from the conversation...but explains it quite quickly. Breaking up after a hit album is a strange career choice...which is why it's pretty uncommon.
