He had cancer and looked pretty frail the last time I saw him on tv. Not surprising, sadly.
I wish as a society we could put enormous resources toward it and cure that terrible disease.

Damn, this one sucks. "I don't want your life" is a common quote in my household.
Colonoscopies are a pain in the ass (literally). Depending on your insurance, you're either taking pills or drinking this godawful liquid and then blowing out the toilet while also not eating for a couple of days, feeling weak as hell, then getting put to sleep and being groggy AF for the rest of the day.
But not having them done once you're 40+ is the surefire way to die young.

Now they have cologuard which makes it super easy so you don't have to do the full colonoscopy. Drop a turd in a bucket they send you at home and drop it in the mail.

My GI doc is pretty leery of Cologard. He says colonoscopies are still the gold standard (Maybe he sees a threat to his livelihood, but I doubt it).
My experiences with colonoscopies is that they are not bad at all. And the bonus is that you get to go on a propofol ride, which is pretty fun!

They need to lower the normal screening age to 30 instead of 40.

Cologuard is certainly better than nothing but isn't any where near as comprehensive/accurate as a colonoscopy.
And yes, the colonoscopies I've had have been utterly painless. You're a fool or a damn macho idiot (Vince Lombardi) if you don't get them after 40.

i got my fist one at 53 and should've done it sooner. i had polyps that surely would've lead to cancer. i now get to do them every 2 years. yay me!
Do it. you won't regret it if you have issues.

I strongly disagree with this take. Yeah you take some pills and are on the toilet half a day, then you go in, take a nice nap and are done in an hour. Schedule it for a Friday morning and you have a nice 3 day weekend. Sure as hell beats chemo. Doing it once every 5 years is NOTHING compared to getting cancer.

I agreed. I was up all night ****ting and then felt refreshed after my 30 minute nap. Felt great all day and had the day off.
Colonoscopy > Cologuard.
They are not bad at all. Best nap of your life and your back at work by noon. So easy. And don't wait. Get it as early as you can and/or insurance will allow.
Also any doubt or inconsistency with a Cologuard test and they'll make you do a colonoscopy.

For me it was an hour of pills at 5pm, ****ting for about an hour, then an hour of pills at 12am, then ****ting for one more hour until I was pissing out of my butthole. After that the valve largely stopped. Not bad. Then the next AM a little propofol nap, and overall it was less than 90 minutes from when I got called back to when I got in the car to go home. Repeat in 10 years.
Cologuard detects blood. So even if it works, it means you have something that has advanced to some degree. Better than nothing but not the best. The colonoscopy gets pre-cancerous polyps (if you have any) before they get that far + helps you understand your future risk and frequency of monitoring.
