At first, I didn't like the shrink's involvment in the plot - a little too contrived they both are in love with her and the whole Leo getting "assigned" to her.

But from a story within the story standpoint it works: the duality of the characters (Leo, Matt Damon and her) all leading this double life.

Great movie. The head shots at the end had the whole theatre gasping!

I agree that the movie was good, maybe not great. I think I didn't enjoy it as much because some guys I knew built it up WAY too much before I saw it. "Best Scorcese Movie Ever" was a phrase tossed around, which I disagree with. I think there were some plot holes that pissed me off (the envelope, whose a mole and who isn't a mole) but all in all, a good movie and well worth my money.

Now, see what NBC is doing...

They even have the same music. And yes, I will be watching it.

Yeah, I'm not sure why those are plot holes.

I finally saw it today. I can't post much here that hasn't already been said, but I thought it was PHENOMENAL! I'll definitely buy it.

I was actually kind of underwhelmed until the very end. I had built this up and was feeling kinda let down, but the best scene was when (SPOILER)

Matt Damon is in the elevator with Leo and goes from being all cocky to saying just kill me... and then everything that followed. That was greatness

Sorry, I didn't have the patience to read the entire thread, so maybe this was already mentioned:

I thought Alec Baldwin was TERRIFIC in this movie. He reprised his role as the half-crazy boss from Along Came Polly, and I thought he did great. I also thought Leonardo was pretty good, despite the fact that I think he's a complete wuss (sorry Leo, I just can't forgive Titanic). Mark Wahlberg was also good...he plays a TERRIFIC tough guy.

I think its completely reasonable to think that Leo, Damon, or Wahlberg may get nominations for different awards from this movie.

Oh hell yes.

This movie wins best picture easily. Hands down the best movie in the last 5, maybe 10 years.

So everyone missed the bread and milk . . . and apparently no one caught the rat on the rail of the balcony as we're looking at the golden dome in the final shot.

Everyone's a rat. That's the point.

I caught the rat on the railing. I didn't associate the bread and milk with the beginning of the movie though.

pretty good movie...but i was somewhat disappointed with the last ~20 minutes. i thought it could have been better.

Col.,

I think everyone caught the rat on the railing. It was there for a good full 10 seconds with no other focus on the screen besides the gold dome. It (the rat) was the only thing on the screen moving. It was incredibly obvious symbolism which is why it hasn't been mentioned.

I brought up the brown bag full of milk and bread b/c it was more subtle and I wasn't sure if everyone here would catch it. The intricacies of this movie are limitless.

what was that golden dome, btw? Harvard? City Hall?

Seems like they mentioned it when he was thinking about buying the apartment, but I can't remember what they said it was.

I thought this movie was awesome, but tap the breaks a little.

This is the statehouse on beacon hill in Boston. The view is symbolic of the high price nature of the apartment/condo he is moving into as well as the new lifestyle he is moving into. The realtor says something to the effect "You'll be upper class by Tuesday". Damon gets visibly upset when the realtor asks how a cop can pay for this and Damon angrily responds with a cosigner.

Here in Chicago, you pay for your view. I live downtown and when I was shopping for a place to live it was remarkable the price difference for a place that had a view of Lake Michigan/John Hancock/Sears Tower etc. vs. one that was on the 4th floor with a view of a brick building across the street. This place Damon is moving into is definitely not affordable by your average cop but Damon is on the take so he is now able live that upper class life style: the uber hot elite girlfriend, the nice place he normally couldn't afford, etc. He has that power/lifestyle he has longed for.

Tap the breaks on which part of the statement?

I will bet money on the best picture statement. Care to put your money where your mouth is?

As far as best movie in the last 5/10 years that would be hard to prove but dare I ask which movie has been better?

If you say LOTR I'm going to come find you.

Speaking of Damons character living beyond his means, this would have raised some serious red flags about who the mole could have been. Everyone he worked with would have wondered what was up with that.

As to the rat on the balcony.....symbolism is great but don't make it that friggin obvious.

saw it last night, and absolutely loved it. one thing i didnt quite get was that when Costigan first goes into the office and wahlberg and sheen know everything about his childhood. how did they not know the same about damon's character? it seemed like he was nearly practically raised by costello and if they did their homework they would know that.

saw the milk and bread, thought that was awesome.

I could be mistaken, but I think Costello KNEW the guy was a cop - he was the one working with the FBI. Damon found out when he was looking through that notebook.

Fantastic movie! I had high expectations and it met them and then some.

What surprised me was how funny it was. I was cracking up at them putting down each other and Mark Wahlberg was greatness. Everytime he opened his mouth I was laughing.

One question:

Why was Leo tasked with following the envelope [with the SSNs and accounts]? Have someone else do that.

If you're worried about the assignee being a mole, then Wahlberg or Sheen could have done it themselves.

Why have your deepest inside guy risk his entire cover on a tailing operation?

I could be wrong, but I don't think Wahlberg or Sheen had anything to do with Leo following the envelope. He was following the envelope on his own to try and save his own neck. The envelope had a good chance of getting his cover blown and getting him killed.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah, Sheen and Walberg had nothing to do with Leo following the envelope
Keegan99

because marky mark and the other guy knew that costello would take the envelope straight to the police department's mole. he was their best shot at figuring out that damon was the mole.

I may have missed a scene that explains this, and therefore it is a stupid question, but when did, if ever, did Leo become aware that the shrink was dating Matt Damon?

fgtntexag07 - Umm... that was obvious.

Read the posts prior to that. My question about the text was in support of my assertion that Wahlberg and Sheen knew about the envelope, and had Leo do the tail.

The question goes back to "Why have your deepest inside guy risk his entire cover on a tailing operation?"
