Remember at the beginning of the war when Russia mined civilian evac routes and shelled busses of evacuees/refugees?

Couldn't help sharing. The laughable irony and willful hypocrisy involved here is almost beyond belief. Absurdly laughable. But I did laugh. Watching Russia try to clutch their pearls with a straight face would be a hoot if it weren't for all the people dying on account of them.

Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine's railways.

""It's a very clear battle for the railways," says Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chief executive of UZ. "The enemy is trying to stop us completely. This is part of a war tactic meant to cause panic among civilians, destroy our economy, and make the country unlivable."

Are Tomahawks any better at avoiding anti air weaponry than other such missiles?

Not if they're trying to hit targets that are behind in-depth defenses. They fly extremely low but they're still sub-sonic.

Biggest benefit is the massive payload they can carry and their ability to damage fortified targets. They'd have to screen the hell of them with drones and other hybrid attacks to give them any chance of hitting deep into Russia.

Ukrainian long-range missiles and drones are getting thru to their targets, but they are much less precise and, with the exception of Flamingo, carry a much smaller payload than does Tomahawk.

There's a reason Putin becomes unglued at the thought of Ukraine getting Tomahawk.

They have an advantage over glide bombs, himars, atacms, etc because they can fly very low for the full length of their flight instead of needing a ballistic trajectory or an initial boost phase at higher altitude. That gives air defenses a much shorter time to engage them before impact when they are finally detected. I am not sure if the Russians are using any airborne radar systems anymore after the Ukrainians took out a few of their Mainstays, but those have a better chance to see them than ground based systems. The Tomahawks are also faster than the low flying propeller driven drones and carry a much bigger warhead. So overall, they will be somewhat harder to shoot down just because of the short engagement window, and they will not be as easy as slower moving drones to shoot down once engaged. Not a massive difference, but the combination of range and warhead size combined with lower ability to shoot them down will be a game changer if we let them use them properly.

Trump wasn't asking Putin's permission he was threatening him to get him back to the negotiating table.

Unfortunately, one of the main plays in Putin's playbook is to feign good faith negotiation in the interest of stalling and delaying adverse actions. He's done the same thing repeatedly and we never seem to learn that we're being played.

it was always interesting that the Russkies were incapable of cutting off Ukrainian supply routes from the West.

I mean there are only a few rail lines to put tanks and APCs and SP Artillery from Poland.

even the road network could have been hit at the beginning of the war.

At this point, there is no way you can make that statement with any certainty.

NATO allies continue to debate how best to respond to Putin's provocations.

"Russian incursions into NATO allies' airspace are causing rare public disagreements between treaty allies. Is this the disarray that Moscow wants, or a sign of healthy debate? Officials we spoke to suggested that the answer is both."

With this agreed upon meeting in Budapest, its just another chance for Putin to delay and try to flip Trump again.

Russia certainly not talking like they're willing to reach a compromise.

"Russia needs victory under all known conditions," Medvedev responded to Trump

This is how the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council reacted to Trump's proposal to stop the conflict along the front line and declare both Russia and Ukraine winners.

The Kyiv regime will not be recognized as the winner under any circumstances, Medvedev notes.

"The Banderite gang will not be recognized as the winner in their own home under any circumstances. And the drug addict and his comrades understand this perfectly. The loss of territories will not be forgiven not only by the rabid Ukrainian nationalists but also by political competitors. Therefore, the end of the war means the death of the regime," Medvedev writes.

Medvedev also reproached Trump for the fact that even the "old senile Biden" was against supplying Ukraine with long-range weapons.

"We must be prepared for any development of events," Medvedev emphasized."

After the meeting, some media reports seem to be that Tomahawks may be off the table.

Piecing together Zelenskyy's press pool after his talk with Trump and Trumps own tweets mixed with other media reports does seem that long range munitions were ultimately a bluff and Putin called and Trump backed down, again. I am biased based off of recent history but have been trying to look at this objectively and it does seem to be the case. At least from the data we have.

Granted, not sure this changes much as obviously, this was ultimately a Hail Mary IMO anyways and was never should have been a factor in any war plans IMO. It'll just drag things out longer and make things just a little bit easier on Russia. As both our of admins, this one and last one, are wont to do.

Cold is already settling in that part of the world. The Ukes will suffer, as they have done last several winters, but will be interesting to see if Russia will feel any true pressure as well from "General Winter" aside from the already hellish conditions on the frontlines.
