I've read some serious commentary from commentators I respect who seem to indicate the IDF never amassed the forces required to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, only to move from one part to another part, basically. From watching the news this seems to have been the case to me, but I really don't know (nor understand their force structure/options to amass more manpower).

Are they building up more substantial forces this time to actually occupy the whole thing?

This is correct. The Israelis don't have enough ground forces to fully assault Gaza while also adequately guarding their northern borders with Lebanon and Syria. That was the Iranian strategy - force the Israelis to thin their defensive lines so Hezbollah could more easily infiltrate.

Don't know about future attack plans but the Hez threat, while seriously diminished, is not completely removed. The Israeli military needed a pause/reset too, much of their fighting force comes from the reserves which removes a lot of able body working folks from the economy, placing yet another strain on their society at large.

The Palestinians already breaking the rules of the ceasefire. They need to be removed from Israel and dumped into the desert.

I don't think the plan is to ever "occupy" every meter of Gaza

it's to degrade the Hamas ability to ever launch another attack on Israel.

now that Hizbullah has been degraded in South Lebanon and there is a ceasefire- that means more troops available to flatten Khan Younis

at the same time, these soldiers have been in rough combat for months on end so it's not like they can just keep sending the same guys back in like Hamburger Hill

They have shown an incredible resiliency and ability to withstand a year+ of constant bombardment, and more importantly still have living hostages that the Israelis very much want back alive.

Said it before, but I wouldn't want to be the last living hostage in Gaza. Hamas has 0 incentive to actually give them back to the Israelis. Hamas knows Israel is going to clean house, especially now that their brothers in the West Bank have attempted this mass bombing, once the last living hostage is returned.

Will be very interesting to see how the Israeli's respond to this bombing attempt. They were, in a word, lucky.

Edit - And the intel agencies over there have a lot of explaining to do, now more so than ever after 10/7, how these bombs made their way onto buses.

Because Israel is fighting a war using rules instead of the goal to wipe the enemy out.

If they put everyone in Gaza to the sword the problem would be solved, but they wont do it.

At this point there are no more "innocent" Palestinians. When everyone in the community is celebrating the murder of children things are too far gone.

And I have seen a few post about the mom Shiri not being the female body that was returned. Now with Trump in the White House there should no longer be a ceasefire

Understand the sentiment, and don't necessarily disagree.

But the Israelis are and have been hampered by their desire to return all living hostages. That does impair their ability to wage war. Unfortunately for Israeli leadership, their constituents would overthrow the government if they knew the IDF operated with minimal concern for the living hostage's wellbeing. So would we if we knew the US government approved operations that would knowingly kill our citizens.

No living hostages = significantly different ROEs, aims, and methods.
